Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College, Last week I had the pleasure of hearing a story conveyed by parishioner and SJC supporter Carmen Bottfield. She explained that in the last week of Term 2, following Mass, she approached a group of Year 8 boys and asked something very important of them. Carmen had been moved to approach the boys as they were the same age as the young men in Thailand who were at that point, trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave. She had spent days praying for their safe return and felt compelled to ask a favour of the boys. She asked them that throughout the day when they had a chance to look up and say a little prayer for the safety and return of the Thai soccer team. The boys promised they would do this (with a wry smile). Carmen was assured by other students that these boys were true to their word and made little petitionary prayers throughout the day. After a number of days, news came through that after eighteen days, the team had been rescued. The power of prayer is an amazing thing and Carmen’s story is a great example of how it can make the world a better place. Thanks to the young men of SJC who answered the request of one of our faith-filled and joyous parishioners. SHINE GATHERING Last Thursday and Friday, Mr Scott McDermott and Ms Teneille DeLuca, along with Youth Ministry Officers Cameron O’Toole and Grace Hinchliffe accompanied close to 60 SJC students to the annual Shine gathering in Coffs Harbour. The two-day conference sees over 700 young people from the Diocese come together to enrich and explore their faith. Thanks to all those involved, but particularly Scott and Teneille for all their hard work in planning and organising this very important trip for our students. RESILIENCE IN OUR WORLD A number of weeks ago, I managed to view the Australian Story featuring chef Matt Golinski who tragically lost his wife and three daughters in 2011 in a house fire. While most stories featured on the programme are very inspiring, what made Matt’s story stand out was the magnitude of his loss and the serious nature of the injuries he had to overcome. While he will carry the scars for the rest of his life and the pain of the loss of his family for eternity, Matt was able to find a way to move forward in life. We all face challenges in our lives; these are inevitable. How we react to such challenges is an important part of our persona. Matt’s story is important as it reminds us that regardless of what we find ourselves confronting in life, there is a way through. If you get a chance, watch the episode (link found here). ENVIRONMENT CLUB

I would like to draw your attention to the great work our school Environment Club has been doing under the guidance of Ms Amy Pascoe. The group meet each fortnight and discuss and plan ways of improving practices in the College. I was lucky enough to attend a recent meeting where Mr Joel Saye ran a workshop on creating alternatives to cling wrap to preserve food using beeswax and fabric. There were close to twenty-five students present and eight staff. The group is producing entertaining and informative videos, have changed the way bins are used and are pushing the recycling of paper and drink containers amongst many of their projects. Well done Amy and the group and thanks for making a difference.

BUILDING CULTURAL CAPACITY PROGRAMME

As previously mentioned, our College is currently completing a programme that helps a school reflect upon, and if required, improve the culture it currently finds itself in. Our College staff has elected a School Improvement Team (SIT) who have spent time during our previous staff learning day (July 23) examining what staff perception of an ideal school is. The SIT will do some more work with staff, with the support of the Leadership Team, during staff meetings this term in anticipation for their next activity day on October 15 (student free day). I look forward to reporting more on the progress of this programme.

STAFFING UPDATE On August 17, the end of Week 4, we said Bon Voyage to Mr Chris Morrison who has travelled to Europe with his family for the remainder of the year. We wish him all the best during his time over there. In his place, Ms Sara Reynolds will fill the role of Leader of PDHPE. Due to Sara taking on this role, Mrs Sue Wilson and Mrs Hannah Ardrey will be sharing Sara’s role. We wish Sara, Sue and Hannah well. The College is currently interviewing staff for leadership roles as the current three year contracts issued draw to a conclusion. It is great to spend time during the interview process with such talented and committed staff members. Announcements of appointments will be made across the next few weeks.

PARKING IN WINDERS PLACE A number of families choose to collect their children of an afternoon from Winders Place (near Lake Kimberley). If you do this, you must be conscious of the residents in the area and ensure you are not parking illegally or inhibiting the entry or exit for residents.

I issued a warning from Council last year that rangers would be intermittently patrolling the area. The fine and demerit point penalties are substantial so please ensure you are patient, safe and doing the correct thing.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE COLLEGE Last week I included in the newsletter the contractual agreement signed by all families upon enrolment that outlined a commitment to support all the College stands for. I thank you for taking the time to read that page of the enrolment package. I feel there is a need to also reiterate previous correspondence regarding communication with the College staff. Staff at SJC are encouraged to ensure there is open communication between home and school and this may often be done through personal meetings, phone calls, the College app, email or use of the College diary. If you feel the need to contact staff via email, please be aware that they may not respond immediately, particularly if the message is sent late at night. Staff on a full teaching load can sometimes find themselves with a timetable where they have a run of multiple days with six out of six lessons being taught face-to-face. This, coupled with extra-curricular activities, curriculum meetings and other commitments could see them reply a day or two after the email or phone call message. I simply ask for your patience and understanding when this occurs. All staff value each of our students and having them attain their highest potential is our common goal. Correspondence will occur when the first available opportunity arises. If matters require direct contact, our office staff members Ms Leea Kenny and Mrs Jane Joseph will happily take your call and direct it to the appropriate staff who will respond in a timely manner if they are not available. Please understand that both Leea and Jane only need a brief summary of the issue pertaining to your child and they will inform the relevant member of staff who will address the matter. Kind regards Mr Scott Thomson ([email protected])

Matthew 13:47-53

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all this?” They answered, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place.

Jesus urges us to gather in everyone we possibly can. It’s for us to share the good news; it will be for God to sort us all out according to our hearts, our needs, our sins, and our gifts.

Lord God, may your word take deep root in my heart and transform how I think, discern, and act. May I be a diligent student and faithful disciple of both the Old and the New Testaments.

I pause for a moment and think of the love and the grace that God showers on me. I am created in the image and likeness of God; I am God’s dwelling place.

I love the imagery here, both in today’s scripture and the concept of finding myself in ‘God’s soft lap’. There is a feeling of belonging – a connectedness to the Father. There is also the idea where my gifts – brought out and displayed through my faith as treasures, old and new, are acknowledged. Drawing all these together is the recognition of me being welcomed – accepted – into the family; I am a part of the fold. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) He is reaching out to all of us, letting us know that we all have a role to play here, a reason for being in this family of Christ. You’ve no doubt heard of the expression, ‘we’re all in the same boat’, but don’t use it in a negative context, focus on the fact that we’re all in this together – we are all in the same boat. Imagine yourself ‘on-board’. Look around you. What is everyone doing? Some cast the net; some row the boat. All contribute to the catch. And together, we all come safely back to shore. This is what it means to live life to the full. Mr Scott McDermott Leader of School Evangelisation

God’s Soft Lap I’m not going to deny that there is something awesome and amazing and bigger-than-I-can-fathom about God. As someone once observed, if we could understand God, then what we are understanding would not be God.

Yet, when I think about terms such as awesome and amazing in relation to the divine, I tend to assume that they apply to the aspects of God that are majestic and powerful.

I need to remind myself that maybe the characteristics of God that are bigger than I can comprehend are also the softer, more comforting ones. I need to understand that God is fathomless depths, all right, but those depths are soothing ones too.

Maybe on those tough days when nothing seems to be going right, I can challenge myself to add a little something to my yoga pants, slippers, and pillow routine. I can take a moment to feel the divine presence enveloping me with warmth. I can ditch any residual echo of God as the metal folding chair and sink into the reality of God as the soft lap, comforting me in both body and soul.

Last week the SJC Environment Group participated in a lunchtime activity facilitated by Mr Joel Saye. Mr Saye demonstrated how to make beeswax wraps which are reusable and can be used in place of single-use cling wrap. The students made their own beeswax wrap to take home. The activity was very successful and students really enjoyed themselves and were looking forward to using their new wraps to reduce their impact on the environment at home.

On Monday 2nd of June, St Joseph’s College and St James Primary students, staff and family celebrated NAIDOC week together as one. This year’s NAIDOC theme is “BECAUSE OF HER, WE CAN!”. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman have played and continue to play an active and significant role in the community, local, state and national level. NAIDOC week celebrations are held annual across Australia each July to celebrate history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This year we had Aunty Maureen Logan, a local elder who shared her story of growing up on the Tweed Coast with her parents and the upbringing of her children and grandchildren. Aunty Maureen shared an important message about education that ‘we are lucky to have Years 7-12, as her children only had school up till Year 10’. The students enjoyed hearing the story of Aunty Maureen Logan and learning local knowledge. Following this event Aunty Maureen attended the Tweed Heads NAIDOC Dinner Dance to end up winning the award for ‘Elder of the Year’.

Along with Aunty Maureen we also had the Yugambeh Dance Group join us for another year. The students enjoy this cultural performance and experience with the Dance group. Luther who is the represents the Yugambeh Dance Group performed a Welcome to Country and spoke about each dance that was performed in depth, with the meaning and where the dance was originated from.

Following the whole school assembly, the parents/guest were invited to morning tea with Miss Logan and Mrs Saunders and the College’s two MC’s for this event Ethan Kane and Jedda Gardiner-Dodd. This was a great time for the parents and students to have a yarn and share stories of woman who have influenced their lives.

Throughout the day the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students celebrated with Miss Logan by letter writing, painting, food, kahoot and with lot of music and laughter. The students enjoyed this time as they learnt so more knowledge about the Tweed Region and got to spend time together as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. It was a fun day and students, parents and staff enjoy celebrating NAIDOC week this year with the College and Primary School.

Tips on choosing what to study We understand that choosing what to study at university isn’t easy. Here are some practical tips to help you make the right call.

Study what you want It seems obvious, but when it’s time for you to choose your course preferences, list the courses you are most excited about. Chances are you’ll encounter a lot of opinions about what you should study, but this is about what you want to study. If you’ve got your heart set on a course, go for it.

Look past the course to the career There are lots of reasons people go to university. One of the main motivations is to get the skills you need for a meaningful career. Talk to a careers advisor or friends in the industry, trawl career profiles and even consider some online career quizzes to help you decide.

Get across deadline and entry

requirements There are a lot of different deadlines for applications and change of preference rounds. Refer to QTAC for the relevant information. Entry requirements also differ between courses, and many have prerequisite subjects that need to be completed before you’re accepted. Check the entry requirements for individual degrees to ensure you’re only applying for courses you’re eligible for. No matter what OP/ATAR you think you’ll get, you should list your courses in order of preference, so the course you’d most like to study first, followed by the second and so on.

Have a back-up plan You may have your heart set on one specific course, but you should still list as many courses as you can on your preference list. This should include similar courses with more flexible entry criteria, or with different entry requirements. This gives you options if you don’t get into your first preference, and you can always decline an offer if you get accepted and decide it really isn’t the one for you. Also, some courses can act as pathways into other programs, so you can use a course with more flexible entry requirements as a stepping stone into your preferred course.

During Week 4 the NRCC Netball competition was hosted at Casino’s Colley Park. The College entered two junior teams (Under 14s), as well as two senior teams (Under 16s). Throughout the day the girls competed against teams from St Mary’s Casino, Mt St Patrick College, Xavier Catholic College and Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar school. The girls represented the College with pride and should be proud of their efforts during the day. Congratulations to the Under 14 Maroon team who won their age level against some fierce competition. A very big thank you to the girls who also umpired throughout the day, Ashley Burns, Jade Carpenter, Makenzee Weaver, Kealey Hall, Larni Borger, Mia Babovic, Bailey Whitehouse and Mrs Renee Burns.

On Thursday 16 August, a bus load of students travelled down to Coffs Harbour for the Diocesan Athletics carnival. The group were rewarded for their early start (4am) with a beautiful warm winter day and some healthy competition. There were many fantastic efforts against strong competition, some personal bests and some valuable learning experiences. All students should be proud of their performances on the day. The support that the team showed for each other was a particular highlight (as well as the stops at Macca's along the way). Three athletes qualified for the NSWCCC State Championships in Sydney to be held in September. A summary of their results are below. Special congratulations to Kyle Scott (7C) and Willow Trimboli (7C) who were awarded as Age Champions for their age groups on the day. Olivia Millett (9D) - 100m (1st) and 200m (2nd) Kyle Scott (7C) - 100m (1st), 200m (1st) and Shot Put (1st) Willow Trimboli (7C) - 100m (2nd), 200m (1st) and 400m (1st).

Diocesan Athletics Carnival

I had the pleasure of spending the weekend of August 10-12 with a number of our highly committed students at the Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup. How this came about was quite by accident but, still the same, an inspiring story. This bunch of Year 11 (and one Year 9 girl) would often be found playing volleyball in the Doyle Centre late on Tuesday evenings. One evening, I thought I would inquire as to what they were training for. When the response came, “Dio volleyball” was ‘spiked’ back at me, I thought we had to find something for them prior to the late October trip down the Pacific Highway. This was, after all, was March. So, the young ladies embarked on a rigorous weekly training regime that saw them arrive at the Carrara Sport Stadium one Friday afternoon to represent St Joseph’s College for the first time in this tournament. They were the talk of the arena as there was only one other team from outside of the state and they were a rep team of boys from NZ. There were over 300 teams involved in the event, so their excitement and nerves were equally palpable. For their first foray into proper volleyball, the St Joey’s ladies performed incredibly well. Not only were they learning on the court (their pool included the two eventual grand finalists), they had to learn all facets of volleyball officiating. Who knew scoring was so complex? With one win on the board from the pool matches, they progressed to the repercharge playoff for a place in the top eight. A number of close losses followed and the SJC team eventually ended up in 12th place in their division (out of 17). Thanks must go to the parents and families who travelled to support the team and to the girls themselves for taking on a challenge and rising to it. Their commitment and passion is truly an asset to the College. Scott Thomson
