Dear Parents We have been very fortunate to secure funding for the Indonesian Program to continue in 2017. Yesterday I attended a Symposium on Bilingual and Multilingual Education in the Oceania-Pacific Region in Canberra; a part of our commitment to keep current on global developments with language policy. The three other Principals in the language program and our state manager Amanda Davis were also invited. This event aimed at gathering scholars together with schools and organisations from Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia to enable them to disseminate good practices, and reflect upon the school policies of bilingualism/multilingualism. These questions are extremely relevant to Australia, which has both bilingual programs in European (and Asian) languages such as the bilingual and language programs for Australia’s Indigenous Communities. The symposium was followed by a reception (5.30-6pm) and a public lecture on “Securing the Future: Multilingualism as a Social Resource” presented by Professor Joseph Lo Bianco. Much insight has been gained to bring back to our community. Professional Development for the Indonesian team in Sydney today—In response to requests from participants who attended the two-day professional development on Content and Languages Integrated Learning (CLIL) delivered by Dr Russell Cross in October 2015, a special one-day follow-up CLIL workshop is being held today at Rydges Hotel in Sydney. Russell is a recognised world expert in CLIL method who coordinates the Master of Education (CLIL) at the University of Melbourne. He is also an extremely dynamic and engaging presenter. This professional development day is designed to build upon the content of the Bilingual Schools CLIL workshops delivered by Russell at the end of last year. The workshop will begin with a reactivation and refresher in CLIL methodology, followed by a discussion/workshop of teachers’ short, medium and long-term school plans for language teaching. The aim is to discuss how teachers are applying CLIL in practice and to scaffold and facilitate their knowledge on how to improve practice, and ‘where to from here’. I will be joining the Indo team who are attending this conference and I thank Bu Nik, Bu Bibi and Bu Bridget for their dedication and commitment to this program. Looking forward to seeing as many P and C members tomorrow afternoon for the special meeting called to discuss the Optus Tower. Mental Health Week

This week, Mental Health Week, should be a time of healing and compassion, or at

least awareness.

Why Mental Health Week is important

In any given year, 20% of the population is experiencing mental health issues, 45% in

their lifetime. Mental Health Week (October) is the perfect time to have an open

discussion on mental health.

It acts as a yearly reminder to check up on friends, family and co-workers.

The week is a prompt to connect with the people around us and see how they are doing. Questions such as ‘How are you

going? Would you like any help/support?’ can let the person know you care and are keen to help. You don’t have to have

all the answers to their problems, just being there for someone and showing you care is extremely helpful.

You should not neglect your own mental health.

Questions such as ‘How am I feeling? Have I been looking after myself? Are there any stressors in my life, and what help

can I access?’ can help you to check in with yourself. If you feel like some help/support, please reach out to someone you

can talk to like family, friends, doctors, counsellors and helplines. Some healthy, self-care activities include exercise,

getting enough sleep, healthy eating, meditation/mindfulness activities.

Community gets behind insulin pump for Peter—Guardian News

What a fantastic result for ex–Scotts Head PS student Peter Cooper.

Last week, Peter received his new insulin pump and is going well.

Here is the news article from the Guardian newspaper 22nd September

2016:

Community help offers freedom for Scotts Head diabetic

COMMUNITY support has given Peter Cooper the freedom to enjoy life

like any other teenager.

Thanks to local fundraising efforts his family is now able to purchase a

new insulin pump for the 14-year-old Type One diabetic … a $9000 expense that was otherwise beyond their reach.

“It’s life-changing for us all. Before Peter had to have up to six injections a day and we were in and out of hospital all

the time,” his mother Jenny Medica said.

“This little electronic device stops all of that … Peter carries it around and can program it to administer the right dose of

insulin automatically depending on what he eats.

“The National Diabetes Association gave him his first pump but now we are on our own and it needs replacing every

four years.”

Enter Lilly Pacey, 2015 Scotts Head Primary School captain, who together with her friends took up Peter’s cause,

sending letters out to a long list of local clubs and businesses.

“Peter is a good friend and I thought it would be a good idea to help him and his family to raise the money so they

didn’t have to do it all on their on,” 13-year-old Lilly said.

“We sent the letters and the Macksville Lions responded immediately. They then invited us to speak at one of their

meetings, which I did as a representative of the SRC (Student Representational Council).”

Macksville Lions President Tony Vines said Lilly’s presentation was ‘remarkable’ and resulted in the club committing to

the project, raising funds through raffles at the local caravan park as well as support from the Lions Save-Sight

Foundation.

On Tuesday Lilly Pacey together with the Macksville Lions and others gathered at Scotts Head Public School to present

Peter and Jenny with two cheques (one

from the Lions and one from the SRC)

totalling the $9000 needed for Peter’s

new pump.

Jenny said it was an emotional moment for

them: “To think the community came

together to do this for is – it is very special

and we are very grateful.”

She said since receiving his first pump,

Peter had not presented at the hospital

emergency department for about three

years.
