2017
The Transition Year (TY) is a one-
year programme taken after Junior
Cycle and before the two-year
Leaving Certificate programme.
At Kylemore College, the pro-
gramme is designed to act as a
bridge between the Junior
Certificate and Leaving Certificate
programmes.
During Activity week students en-
gage in challenging activities and
this particular week was no
different.
The students spent the day on the
dry ski slopes at Kilternan, and
surprised teachers at their natural
skill and determination to stay
upright.
Great fun was had in Wicklow
climbing mountains, and plenty of
noise was heard
around the corridors during the
drumming workshops. The first
aid course proved a hit with all
students, as did the modern
dance lessons. The second
activity week will take place in
February.

PRINCIPALS NOTE
Welcome to our first newsletter of the 2017-18 academic year. A special congratulations to our first year
students who started their second level education with us on 29th August. They have immersed themselves
fully in school life, performing well both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities. We are particularly
proud of our 1st year girls’ soccer team who have trained hard and enjoyed great success on the playfield.
Commitment and hard work has been rewarded by the FAI with a full kit for the team.
Congratulations to all students elected to the Student Council, elected by their peers to work with Mr Mc
Govern and I to make Kylemore College a better school for our students.
Parents play a huge part in supporting their child in school. I urge all parents to check the student journal
each evening and I ask parents of our 1st & 2nd year classes to sign the school journal every night and
record the amount of time your child is spending on their homework.
Final call to parents of students wishing to enrol for places in 1st year for September 2018, please submit
your form by Wednesday 29th of November.
Best wishes to all students preparing for Christmas tests commencing on Tuesday 12th December. Remem-
ber good preparation and hard work will result in your success in the forthcoming exams.
Many thanks for your continued support !!
Ms. Nolan TY Activity Week
TY students reaching new heights in an action packed week of adventure and skills.
The Aspire2 Programme has once again commenced in Kylemore College for our 501 & 601 classes. This intervention, formerly The DPS Student Support Pro-gramme is aimed at providing extra support in order to further assist our 6th years attain and make that transition to third level education, apprenticeships and/or into the work place. The programme is funded by DPS Engineering in Baldonnel who not only provide monetary support but also have released their employees to train and act as mentors to the young people in both classes. During midterm 4 of the 601 class attended a four day revision course in French at the Alliance Francaise on Kildare Street, Dublin. Also during the break there was an overnight trip to Cork for members of Aspire 2 YAP (Youth Advisory Panel) from 501 & 601. Our focus throughout the Aspire2 programme is always on pro-gression and so we encourage our young people to explore what’s on offer to them in the colleges and universities in the Dublin area. Most of the Universities are beginning their open days over the next few weeks. Some of these institutions require students to pre register which can be done online at their websites. Over the last couple of years we have strengthened our links with Maynooth University which is only a bus journey away from our students living in Ballyfermot. The students from class 501 attended the open day in Maynooth, on Friday November 24th thanks again to the programme funders DPS. Ms Keegan

SENIOR BIOLOGY
Class 601 Biology students completed four of their Leaving Certificate experi-
ments at Dublin Zoo this month. We were happily surprised by a “Wild Lights exhi-
bition that is currently on show at the Zoo.
POETRY ALOUD We had a number of first year and second year students volunteer to participate this year in the National Poetry competition, Poetry Aloud, as well as our first ever sen-ior cycle student. The students that volunteered came out of class a few times over the course of three weeks to learn their two poems and practice their recitation style. We went to the National Library to compete against other Dublin schools and it was fantastic to see so many of our students to so well in the competition. In particular Christian Dutton was singled out by the judg-es as one with real potential. I was particularly im-pressed with Alex Kealy, Ella Mooney and Kathleen Draga, who must have been close to the standard as they were excellent on at least one of their two poems. Mr Peelo

The first rounds of the SCC girls’ soccer tour-
nament were held in Col Íde, Finglas on a very
wet Wednesday afternoon on September 13th

there were many close shots saved by their
strong defence but we finally scored the

mine McEvoy, Jorja Gibbons, and Vanessa
Nolan (Class 401) Julia Filip, Kasey Doyle

through to the next round on this occasion but
our students played with pride & heart.
First years have now completed five of
their taster subjects and in
December they will complete their sub-
ject choices that they will continue
through to the Junior

PARENTS COFFEE MORNING
Kylemore College welcomed all parents of our
new first year students, to a coffee morning in
the school library. It gave all parents a chance
to see how their sons and daughters were set-
tling into secondary school.
On November 23rd, Kylemore College Choir and Band headed off to
Prague in the Czech Republic to participate in the Prague Advent Choral
Meeting 2017. This will be the first trip abroad for Kylemore College and
the excitement is building among students and teachers. 11 students from
classes Yeats, Friel, Erne, 401, 402, 501 & 601 will be joined by 8 Music
Centre students and 5 teachers for this 4 day adventure. The students have
been busy working with Mr Kelly and Ms McGuinness putting together a
varied programme of Christmas music. The group will perform in St
Nicholas and St Salvator churches in Prague and will also sing in a
Friendship Concert with 9 other choirs from all over Europe. It promises
to be a trip to remember.

RECORDING PROJECT
In another first, our choir and band has been in the recording studio with Ballyfermot Folk
Group to record some original songs by Ballyfermot man Gerry Simpson. This project has
given our students experience of what is involved in creating music in a recording studio. A
big thank you to Mr Hackett and his PLC students for driving these recording sessions. We
hope to have a CD ready to release later this year or early in the new year….Mr Kelly
Gaelic football got off to a great start for Kylemore College’s
Minor (1st years), Junior (2nd & 3rd years) and Intermediates
(4th, 5th & 6th years) teams.
The Minor team reached on their final on the 4ht October but
unfortunately just missed out to Clonturk College despite a very
determined performance in very difficult conditions. It was a day
that Kylemore have now used to their advantage as they have
won their Leinster Post Primary Schools group and have pro-
gressed on to the next stage of the competition with a chance of
getting a very fair draw as they won their group.
The Junior team captained by Cian Kelly (Class Joyce) had a very
good afternoon on the 13th September with solid performances
from Daniel Ryan Farrell (Yeats) and Aaron Corish (Friel) but to
name a few. As a result they won the Junior CDETB competi-
tion.
The Intermediates captained by Nathan Ennis (Class 502) came
out very deserving winners over Larkin College on the 4th Octo-
ber. Kylemore College came out of the blocks with all cylinders
firing and this was to prove the difference in the end with a score-
line of 3-5 to 1-5.
Performances from Seán O’Connell (502), Dillon Withero
(402) and Lee Clarke Raymond (602) contributed to a very
successful afternoon. Nathan Ennis received the referees
man of the match award.
All in all a very good start for Gaelic football and a prom-
ising year ahead…. Mr Bermingham
