Principal’s Note Dear Woodridge Families, Now that we all set our clocks back one hour for Daylight Savings Time early Sunday morning, we can enjoy a little more daylight as our mornings begin. The trade-off of course is fewer daylight hours in our after school rou- tines. This is a great time of year to remind our kids about playing safely in our neighborhood. As it gets darker ear- lier, our kids need to remember to watch out for cars be- cause drivers often have a hard time seeing kids in the street in the twilight hours. Kids need to also remember to get home quickly after school to check in with parents and to let them know where and with whom they will be playing. With temperatures dropping and our first snowfall sure to be just around the corner, please also talk with your child about dressing warmly for school. Long pants, coats, gloves, and hats help kids stay warm to and from school and during recess. Kids will go outside for recess throughout the winter months, unless temperatures and wind chill make it unsafe to be outside. These decisions will be made on a day-by-day basis, based on the temper- atures at recess time, so please send your child to school prepared to go outside. Thank you to the many parent volunteers that helped or- ganize and run the Halloween parties in our classrooms last Friday. The afternoon kicked off with our annual Halloween Parade and then shifted to games and yummy treats to end the school day. What a ghoulishly fun after- noon! This is an exciting time of year for staff and students. We are settled into our normal routines and I see engaging teaching and learning throughout our school. I am thrilled to have so many parent volunteers in our school on a dai- ly basis. It is great to see parents in the hallways working with kids and in classrooms supporting teachers in edu- cating our bright Woodridge students. If you are interest- ed in volunteering, please stop by the office and pick up the clearance paperwork. Principal’s Note Dear Woodridge Families,

Now that we all set our clocks back one hour for Daylight

Savings Time early Sunday morning, we can enjoy a little

more daylight as our mornings begin. The trade-off of

course is fewer daylight hours in our after school rou-

tines. This is a great time of year to remind our kids about

playing safely in our neighborhood. As it gets darker ear-

lier, our kids need to remember to watch out for cars be-

cause drivers often have a hard time seeing kids in the

street in the twilight hours. Kids need to also remember to

get home quickly after school to check in with parents

and to let them know where and with whom they will be

playing.

With temperatures dropping and our first snowfall sure to

be just around the corner, please also talk with your child

about dressing warmly for school. Long pants, coats,

gloves, and hats help kids stay warm to and from school

and during recess. Kids will go outside for recess

throughout the winter months, unless temperatures and

wind chill make it unsafe to be outside. These decisions

will be made on a day-by-day basis, based on the temper-

atures at recess time, so please send your child to school

prepared to go outside.

ganize and run the Halloween parties in our classrooms

last Friday. The afternoon kicked off with our annual

treats to end the school day. What a ghoulishly fun after-

day, November 11th, in recognition of Veterans’ Day.

Be sure to read the article in this newsletter about how your child can access a new online math pro-

gram called Dreambox. This is a free resource being provided by our school district to all elementary

aged students. The article provides details about how your child can login to our school account under

their own personal classroom and name. Your child should already know his/her password from using

this program with his/her teacher. K-3 students have selected a picture password, and 4th-6th students

will use their student ID number as their login and their 6-digit birthdate as their password. Once your

child logs in to Dreambox, they are able to work at their own pace through skills and concepts that are

just right for their learning levels. The Dreambox system will adapt to their needs and is able to help

remediate missing skills and/or extend their thinking to content beyond their current grade level. It’s

pretty awesome! Parents you can also set up a parent account that will allow you to get emails from

Dreambox about your child’s progress, and you can also go online to check their progress. Please let

your child’s teacher know if you have any questions about Dreambox.

If you have any questions or comments about how our school is meeting

your child’s needs, please email, call, or stop on by our office. I would

love to talk with you. I look forward to seeing each of you around our

school in the coming weeks. My door is always open, and I’m always ea-

ger to learn from each of you.

Sincerely,

Paul Gannon

Preventing the Spread of Germs

Preventing the spread of germs comes down to the ba-sics: practicing good hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Hand washing with warm water and soap will reduce your chances of being infected and infecting others. Teach your child to wash his/her hands properly. Covering your mouth and nose with your

sleeve when coughing will prevent the spread of germs. Keeping your child home if he/she is ill or not feeling well also helps prevent spreading germs at school. When in doubt, rest is best.

Thanks!

UPCOMING PTSO MEETINGS

THURSDAY, NOV. 20th THURSDAY, DEC. 18th THURSDAY, JAN. 15th

Meetings are held at 7:00 PM in the Library.

Skate Night! Thur., Nov. 6th If your child has never tried inline or quad roller skating, he or she is missing out on one of the easiest, most economical and safest fitness activities for youth. Most children are able to skate (or at least mobile) on the first day they try it. Skating builds confidence, coordi-nation and strength. Parents, skating is a heart healthy activity for you too! Be sure to attend our next PTSO sponsored Skate Night on Thur., Nov. 6th, 6:30—8:30 pm

Thank you Woodridge Cross Country Parents!

Woodridge parents helped to raise money to purchase these two gift baskets which were auctioned at the Ac-

tive4Youth Annual Fundraiser last month. Proceeds from the auction support Active4Y outh's Elementary

Cross Country Program. Active4Youth sponsors our Cross Country program providing funding for coaches.

Mike and Heidi Bresson founded Active4Youth in 2005, with a vision to revive the elementary sports programs

in Spokane Public Schools, which were eliminated due to budget cuts. The program is free to elementary aged

students in Spokane Public Schools. Last year, over 3,500 students participated. “We believe that by teaching

sports and introducing healthy activities to children at a young age, we can begin to address the alarming rise of

childhood obesity while providing children with a safe place to play after school.”

We Still Need Your Family Photos for Our Family Dream Makers Board We are asking that all Woodridge parents/guardians take a moment to find or take a photo of themselves with

their Woodridge student(s). We are asking each family to send in a photo to our office ASAP so these photos

can be displayed on our Family Dream Makers bulletin board just around the corner from our new Staff Dream

Makers bulletin board (across from our office). Please send in a photo no bigger than 3 in x 5 in in size. With

450 students we need to be able to fit all of our family photos within the given space. If you don’t have a cur-

rent family photo, take out your phone, take a quick photo and print it off. It doesn’t have to be professionally

done, just needs to simply show the kids with their parent(s)/guardians. You will not get this photo back, so

please send in a copy that you don’t mind giving away. Please stick the photo in an envelope with your child’s

name and teacher name on the front. Please also write “Family Photo for the Office” on the front of the enve-

lope. Thank you for your help and attention with this project. We are very excited to display your family pho-

tos for all to see. I know your child(ren) will also love showing off their family to their friends and teacher.

Baby, it’s Cold Outside! Now that the weather is changing and temperatures are dropping, dressing

your child appropriately for the weather is important. Students will be lining

up outdoors before school starts and will be going outside for lunch and class

recess. It is important for the students to go out in the fresh air even though

it’s only for a few minutes. Please be sure your child remembers to dress for

the weather…

Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Trapped air

between the layers will insulate. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent

and hooded.

Wear a hat. Forty percent of body heat can be lost from the head.

Wear mittens. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves to keep hands warm.

Use a scarf to cover the mouth to protect lungs from extreme cold. This is especially im-

portant for children who have a respiratory condition such as asthma.

Veteran’s Day “Wall of Honor”

Dear Parents and Community Members, Woodridge Elementary is preparing for our annual Veter-ans’ Day celebration, which will begin on Monday, No-vember 10, at 1:00 p.m. in the gym. We want to display the names of all Veterans and Active Duty personnel in our Woodridge Community. If there is a family member you would like us to honor on this day, we would like to build a “Wall of Honor” for dis-play in our school. Please complete the bottom half of this form and turn it in to the school office by MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH. We would also like a military portrait or picture of those being honored (if possible). Please in-clude a photo of the veteran on the form below. We will return your photo to your child the week following our assembly. If you are afraid that the photo may get lost, please make a copy of it and include the copy on the form below (and keep the original at home). We would like to thank those in our community for their service to our country, so please invite any Veteran and/or Active Duty Military Personnel you know to our school assembly. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Paul Gannon, Principal
