Whooping Cough AlertWhooping Cough – also known as pertussis – is a seriousrespiratory infection that causes a long coughing illness, andcan be life-threatening for babies.

Older children can bring home whooping cough from schooland the infection can then be passed onto babies in the home.

Whooping cough starts like a cold with a blocked or runnynose, sneezing, tiredness, a mild fever and an occasionalcough. The cough usually gets worse and severe bouts ofuncontrollable coughing develop. This can be followed byvomiting, choking or taking big gasping breaths which causesthe “whooping” sound.

The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night. Some older children and adults just get a cough that doesn’t goaway and they may not get any of the other symptoms.

Whooping cough is highly infectious in the first three weeksand can spread easily through families, childcare centres andschools. General practitioners can test for whooping cough andtreat early infections to reduce spread to other people.

Anyone who is infectious with whooping cough should avoidcontact with babies and stay at home until they are no longerat risk of passing the infection on. Please contact the schoolimmediately if you are showing symptoms or have a medicaldiagnosis of Whooping Cough.

Great Book SwapMullaway Primary School is participating in the 2018 GreatBook Swap to help in addressing the literacy gap in remoteAustralia.

Hundreds of schools around Australia are participating to helpraise money to buy books for remote communities. The GreatBook Swap is a great way to celebrate reading locally, and raisemuch needed funds.

The idea is to swap a book in exchange for another, for a goldcoin donation.

If your child would like to participate in the event, we ask thatthey bring a book from home and a gold coin to school. Thebook may be one that they have read and no longer need, orone they have out grown. We ask that it be in good condition.Students may bring their book and donation to the libraryany day until Tuesday 21st of August. On Thursday 23rdAugust, those children will be given the opportunity to choosea book to take home from the selection of books brought toschool by their peers.

Science in PandanusIn science this term Pandanus has been exploring changesthat occur in our environment. We have been conducting anexperiment on the best conditions to grow snow peas in withvery interesting results thus far. We will see what happens overthe next two weeks. We have looked at the changes betweenday and night and why this occurs. Our Picasso inspired artworks use warm and cool colours to show some of thesechanges. Check them out!

DOING IT FOR OUR FARMERS DONATIONDRIVE

Mullaway staff, students, parents, carers andcommunity members.

There is still time to dig deep and show our true, caring nature.

We are still collecting non-perishable food and household itemsfor our many farmers and their families who are struggling tomake ends meet with this continuing drought that is grippingmany areas of NSW. If you have further donations, please sendthem to the school office so we can continue donating to thisgreat cause.

Last week our donations filled Mrs Bartlett’s car boot andback seat and she delivered them to Grafton. They wereoverwhelmed at the amount of goods that were delivered, andextremely grateful.

Some examples are:-

Tea, coffee, tinned food, sauces, pasta, rice, grains, drinks, cereals, etc.

Soaps, shampoo, conditioners, tissues, toilet paper, deodorant, toothpaste, baby formula, nappies, wipes, sanitaryitems, etc.

Even tinned dog and cat food would be a great idea. Theanimals need food too.

Thank you for your support.

DOING IT FOR OUR FARMERSNoah Ryan, a Year 4 student at Mullaway Primary Schoolmentioned to Ms Broekman that many farmers and theirfamilies are struggling with the drought, and he was wonderingif the school could do anything to help. That’s how it gotstarted.

On Tuesday we held a fundraiser to raise money for ourfarmers. The students and staff all dressed “a bit country” just

for the day and they all were asked to bring in a gold coindonation. Being a small school of only about 170 families theschool went on to raise a massive $700 to go to the GraftonBuy a Bale scheme.

A great day was had by all and a big thank you goes out to allthose who opened their wallets and their hearts to help out ourfarmers.

Along with raising money to buy feed for the farm animals MrsBartlett, also thought it would be a great idea if the schoolorganised some hampers to send out to the farmers as well. The students have been busy collecting and donating essentialfood items for the families who are doing it tough.
