Balance

0Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.

0Symmetrical – elements used on one side of the design are similar to the elements on the other side.

0Asymmetrical – The sides are different but still look balanced.

0Radial – The elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

Contrast

0Contrast is a large difference between two elements.

Emphasis

0Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention.

0Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas.

0The areas could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

0A focal point is an area of emphasis.

Movement

0Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through a work of art often to a focal point.

0Movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

0Pattern is the repetition of an element of art in a work of art.

0Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active.

Rhythm

0Rhythm is created when one or more elements of art are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement.

0Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing.

Unity

0Unity is the feeling of harmony between all part of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.

Proportion

0Proportion is the feeling of unity when all the parts (size, amount, or number) relate well with each other.

0When drawing a human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.
