COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the nature of management and analyzes the environmental context within

which managers function. We will identify Planning, Organizing and Controlling, three of the

four major functions of management. Leading, the fourth major function of management is

addressed in Organizational Behavior. We discuss the legal, social and ethical implications of

the actions of managers. We emphasize organizational change management and the importance

of developing your own set of managerial skills as well as your own sense of vocation as a

business leader. Concerns for social and economic justice are incorporated particularly through

the development of a management consulting report, focusing on the operations of The

Children’s Place in Bangladesh.

1. Understand the notion of value creation to meet customer needs.

2. Understand the knowledge and skills, including SWOT analysis, required of today’s

managers and their roles and responsibilities

3. Apply management theory to real, practical, on-the-job performance, and to develop

transferrable skills which can be applied in a real-life work setting.

4. To understand and apply principles of Catholic Social Teaching to management

problems

5. To integrate relevant information into a management report which will become the basis

for effective managerial interventions.

Case Write-up

Each student must write up and hand in his/her analysis of any one of the following cases noted

in the outline: even on dates where two choices are allowed, you only have to do one. You may

choose which one you want to do subject to the professor’s approval. Your write-up is due at

the start of class on the dates shown.

Your approach to case analysis begins with two questions: what are the problems in the case?

what should the individual or organization do about them? You can use the authors' questions at

the end of the case to give you ideas as to the problems, although you should not limit your

analysis to them; I encourage you to identify and analyze other problems in addition to those

raised by the authors. Your write-up does not have to be in the question-and-answer form; in

fact, I would prefer it to be in the form of a consulting report. Each case is of course intended to

bring out some of the important elements of the accompanying chapter, so I urge you to refer to

materials in the Chapter and use them to improve your analysis.

Your write-up will be graded on how well you recognize the complexity of the problems, the

appropriateness of your proposals for dealing with them, and your ability to relate the case to the

relevant management issues and topics raised in the text book, particularly focusing on the

associated Chapter. It is due at the start of the class-period on the due date. It must be typed

on a word processor (not an ordinary typewriter). The suggested length is 2 to 3 typewritten,

double-spaced pages.

Develop and submit 5 slides on your case write up to the class presentation document box for in

class presentation. Hand in printed copy of your write-up and your slides to me at the beginning

of your presentation.

Resume and Five-Year Career Plan Part I: Resume:

Please draw up a 1 page resume. Design it so that it is oriented toward employers who might be

interested in hiring someone with the career plan you lay out in Part II. Highlight (make most

noticeable) what you really want to sell about yourself:

What makes you special--why should an employer want to hire you?

What kind of experience, talent or special background can you bring to an employer?

What makes your resume stand out from 100 other applicants?

Think about the format: make it visually attractive (nicely laid out, good balance between

typeface and white space, good appearance on the page, typed on word processor.)

Your career plan and resume will be graded on organization, cohesiveness, insightfulness, and

appearance, and of course on spelling, grammar and English usage.

Please write up some ideas, or better yet, a plan, for a possible career path that you might like to

pursue. This is not primarily a research project, but you might benefit by gathering some library

information and/or interviewing people in the field about your prospective career choice. Find

out what you can about qualifications, characteristics employers usually seek in new hires,

typical entry-level assignments, common career paths or advancements, characteristics of

successful people in the field, and so on. Also try to learn about salaries at entry-level and after

several years into the field. And very important, gather information on what you would

probably be doing from 9:00 to 5:00 (or 8:00 to 10:00) every day. Go to the Career Services

office in Bayley Hall to get a copy of their booklet and any other information they may have on

your prospective career; also, try to draw insights from the text.

If you are thinking about a functional specialization such as accounting, finance, MIS,

marketing, etc., write your career thoughts on this. Be as specific as possible: for example, if

you're thinking about marketing, you might say you hope to become a marketing manager for

cosmetic products for Estee Lauder. If you think you want to be a line manager or "executive,"

select an industry or type of organization that interests you and focus on managerial careers in

that industry or organization. Alternatively, pick a specialization such as human resources

management, strategic management, corporate planning, management consulting, labor

relations, brand manager, compensation/benefits, small business, etc. and discuss the career

possibilities there. Also feel free to write about a non-business field or career if you want.

Following are some questions to get you started thinking about possible career choices. The

purpose is to stimulate your thinking, not to serve as an outline for your write-up.

What are you good at? (What are you not good at?)

What courses have you especially enjoyed? Any part- or full-time jobs you've especially

enjoyed? (did you enjoy them because of the nature of the work, or because you liked

your teacher or supervisor?)

What would you like your first post-graduation job to be?

Where would you like to be (career-wise) in five (or ten, twenty, thirty) years?

What kind of activity would you like to do for the next five years (if not the rest of your

life)?

What kind of place would you like to work?

What kind of people would you like to work with?

Also think about the negatives of these questions:

What would you not want to be doing next year? In five years? For the rest of your life?

Management Consulting Report

Project: The Children’s Place operating in Bangladesh

To write a management consulting report on The Children’s Place operations in Bangladesh.

Students will focus on one of 7 topics below, making recommendations about how The Children’s Place

can manage its operations and supply chain in Bangladesh according to the following principles:

1. Dignity of the human person; impact of work on the family and community

2. Rights of workers

3. Participation and voice to create the common good

4. Concern for the poor and vulnerable

5. Economy of inclusion; just distribution of income, goods and services.

6. Solidarity and Globalization

7. Sustainability and stewardship for the environment

The focus of the consulting report should:

1. analyze the problem/issue;

2. summarize and explain the relevant facts of the case;

3. Identify and explain why the management failures occurred.

4. and decide on recommendations to overcome the management failures,

5. and to prevent such a disaster in future

As you conduct the research on The Children’s Place, keep a log of your research queries, and annotate

the queries as to which query was most productive in the sense of generating the most useful information.

Printing out your search requests as you do them, and annotating them by hand is acceptable. When you

write your management consulting report, reflect on the data/information retrieval process, and then write

a reflection on what you have learned from the research process, including the “take aways” for the next

time you develop a management consulting report.

In Class Presentations on The Children’s Place Operating in Bangladesh

Due: 04/28/2014

Students will be grouped into teams for the purpose of presenting a consulting report on The Children’s

Place, depending on their choice of topic, 1 – 7 above. Each student is responsible for presenting one

part of the consulting report. A joint team report will be created on a WIKI. Each student should submit

a slide to the team WIKI for their in-class presentation.
