PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
BANKSIA BULLETIN - December 13 2018.
Mt Martha Primary School strives to empower students to be active learners who make a positive
impact in a changing world.
Our Mission is to ensure high quality and engaging learning program that builds
on the capability of every student.
Next week will be the last week of term and it is certainly a busy time of the year. Students have
many activities planned next week. Please check the “Coming Events” and notifications.
Last Day of Term -A reminder that school finishes on Friday 21st December at 1.30pm. Please
note the early pick up time. On this day we will not be running a lunch break. Our middle “block”
after recess will run from 11.30am to 1.30pm. Parents should consider if their child requires a
slightly larger snack to get them through the additional class time.
Lunch Orders - Monday 17th December is the last lunch order day for 2018. Bakery Made, the
company that supply lunch orders for our students, will not be providing their usual service on
the last day of school Friday 21st December.
Parents and Community Volunteers Morning Tea - A reminder that we are holding a special helpers morning tea tomorrow Friday 14th December at 11.00am in the Staff Centre. The support we have received during 2018 from parent and community volunteers in our school programs has been fantastic. All volunteers are welcome! Student Reports - Semester 2 reports for students will be available via Compass on Monday 17th December. The reports provide both students and parents with information on their achievements, areas for improvement and how parents can assist with their learning at home. Congratulations students for your achievements this year! Urgent - Library Books and Take Home Readers - All library books and take home reading ma-
terial should be returned to the classroom as soon as possible. We have a terrific collection of
books that need to be maintained for use by our current and future students. Thank you for
your help.
Lost Property - A reminder to please check our Lost Property section near the Art Room before
the end of the year. Thank you.
Bikes - We have a number of bikes that have been parked in the bike shed for an extended time.
With Bike Ed finished for the year and for the students to have the opportunity for some bike
riding over the holidays, it is now time for the bikes to return home. Following the Bike Ed
program there is also the opportunity to discuss safe riding strategies with your child to assist
them to ride safely. Thank you for your assistance.
Final Assembly for 2018 - A reminder that our final assembly will be held on Thursday 20th December at 9.10am in the gymnasium. We hope to see many of our school community attend the farewell assembly for the 2018 school year. Start of School 2019 - A reminder that students in Year 1 to Year 6 commence school for 2019
on Thursday 31st January. 2019 Prep students will have interviews scheduled this week and
the next Monday and start in classes on Tuesday 5th February.

It has come to our attention that students are behaving dangerously near the jumps in the reserve where Legacy Drive and
Dickinson Grove meet. Students are riding up a steep driveway on the opposite side of the road to get a “run up” in an
attempt to clear the jumps more successfully. In order to do this, they are crossing a road, at speed, where visibility is poor for
drivers and themselves.
If your student rides in this area, please discuss this with them. It is a busy road and has the potential for a bad accident. There
are many students using this community space including students from year 2 and up.
The Traffic and Transport Department from the shire has been contacted and they have visited the site to make an assessment
and have decided to install two bollards at the reserve opposite 44 Dickinson Grove. Any feedback on the installation is
welcomed.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Some important changes have taken place since the start of November this year, with the launch of the
National Education Initiative – “Be You”, which now incorporates the KidsMatter Framework.
The following information from Beyond Blue outlines the rationale behind the new framework:
Beyond Blue was appointed to lead Be You by the Australian Government in June 2017. The National Mental Health Commission Review of Mental Health Programmes and Services Report of 2014 found that there were multiple initiatives promoting social and emotional health and wellbeing for children and young people across education settings. These Australian Government funded programs included: Response Ability
KidsMatter Early Childhood
KidsMatter Primary
MindMatters headspace School Support
All of these initiatives were designed and delivered with the best possible intent, but had the potential to be so much more if they were integrated into one single, national end-to-end education-based program. This led to the Australian Government’s National Support for Child and Youth Mental Health Program, which has the vision to support infants, children and young people to achieve their possible mental health. This program has two components: the Mental Health in Education Program, focused on the education and training of early learning, primary, secondary and pre-service educators; and the National Workforce Support Program, focused on providing education and training to clinicians and non-clinicians working with children between the ages of 0-12 outside of the education space. In June 2017, the Australian Government announced that Beyond Blue was successful in receiving the Mental Health in Education grant for the National Initiative – Be You to June 2021.
KIDS MATTER NEWS
Be You builds on the success and learnings from five existing programs aimed at promoting social and emotional health and wellbeing for children and young people in the education space: KidsMatter Early Childhood, KidsMatter Primary, MindMatters, Response Ability and headspace School Support. Be You is building on the evidence base and ten years of experience of these programs. These programs are now integrated into Be You – one single, national initiative delivered through early learning services, primary and secondary schools. KidsMatter Early Childhood was an Australian mental health and wellbeing initiative set in early learning services. The initiative was developed as a response to the high rates of school-age children with mental health challenges. KidsMatter Primary was an Australian mental health and wellbeing initiative set in primary schools. The initiative was developed as a response to the high rates of school-age children with mental health challenges. MindMatters was a mental health initiative for secondary schools that aimed to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people. The framework provided structure, guidance and support while enabling secondary schools to build their own mental health strategy to suit their unique circumstances. Response Ability provided resources and support for pre-service educators on supporting the mental health of children and young people. The evidence-based resources explored the roles of educators in promoting resilience and wellbeing and in responding to students who may have particular needs related to their mental health, feelings or behaviour. headspace School Support was a suicide postvention program assisting Australian school communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from the death of a student by suicide. *Information from the Be You website – beyou.edu.au/ In 2019, Mt Martha Primary will continue to focus on the mental health and wellbeing of our students
under the new framework of Be You. We retain our recognition and accreditation as a KidsMatter school,
however our support will now come from Beyond Blue – Be You. Our Social and Emotional curriculum will
continue to be taught through the You Can Do It program and Protective Behaviours program. More
information will be provided to parents and carers at the beginning of 2019.
On behalf of the KidsMatter Team I would like to thank you for your wonderful support of your children’s
learning and wellbeing throughout 2018.
The KidsMatter Team wish to extend their best wishes to all of our Mt Martha families for a safe and
happy Christmas. We look forward to continuing our work in supporting student wellbeing in 2019.

KIDS MATTER NEWS
The school equestrian team has been busy at it again.
On Saturday 1st December Georgie competed at Boneo Park in the Interschool Combined training series (Dressage and Jumping). Although she received a clear round in the jumping she didn’t place in the dressage. She was really proud of her Pony as this was the first time they had attempted a Prelim Dressage Test).
On Sunday 2nd December, Boneo also held the Interschool Dressage Series. It was lovely to see some more Mt Martha students, Alegra and Mia M, competing in their first competition representing the school. All the girls competed in the Preparatory Dressage Tests and came home with a placing and a rosette. Well done girls.
Georgie also competed On Tuesday 11th December in her first Interschool Show at Boneo Park which is sponsored by Toorak College. She had a wonderful day learning what the show ring is all about. She had a very successful day but her favourite moment was placing 1st in ridden pony under 12.2H.
Congratulations girls. Lovely to see Mount Martha on the map in the equestrian world.
