The lease for the commercially operated school canteen is due to expire in mid-July. The current operators have had the lease for five years which is the maximum time allowed by the Department of Education. A vigorous tender process was conducted earlier this year to ensure that the boys receive maximum benefit from the canteen operation. A tender committee consisting of the P&C Treasurer, staff representative, two student representatives from the SRC and myself assessed the tenders and made a recommendation to the Department. From the start of Term 3 the school canteen will be operated by a different licensee, Total Canteen Solutions. The transition process will occur during the holidays so there should be minimal disruption to normal service. Can I please take this opportunity to thank the current operator for their service to the school. I look forward to a productive relationship with the new operator. We will publish menus and other specific information about the new canteen operation early next term.

JUNIOR AND SENIOR BAND PERFORMANCES AT THE INNER WEST MUSIC FESTIVAL
On Sunday 24th June, both the Senior and Junior bands performed at Burwood Girls High School for the Inner West Music Festival. The Senior Band performed three pieces, “Havana”, “Jamaica Way” and “Blues by Five”. Their pieces demonstrated the band’s ability to play a variety of styles. The boys played incredibly well and the Concert Band received a certificate from the adjudicator for excellence in ensemble blend.
The Junior Band consisting of Zachary Palmer and
Chester Perino played “When the Saints Go Marching In” and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”. They had a very strong performance and received a certificate from the adjudicator for excellence in teamwork. A big thank you to all the boys and parents who attended the festival on Sunday morning.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MUSIC?
Festival of Instrumental Music Congratulations to Benjamin Munroe of 7B who performed on Sunday 17th and Monday 18th June at the Sydney Opera House as part of The NSW Public Schools Recorder Ensemble. Benjamin is a skilled musician and performer. It is a privilege to have him represent Ashfield Boys High School at these Public Education events.
No Strings About It! The ABHS String Ensemble meet every Tuesday morning at 8 am to rehearse and perform together. Their tutor Kirrily, is pleased with the progress that they are making and the repertoire they are building. If we have any budding string players who would like to join, or if you are a beginner and would like private tuition, please see Ms Small in the CAPA staffroom for details.

YEAR 7 FLANNERY MIXES IT UP
The students of Year 7 have been busy separating mixtures into pure substances and learning about the properties used in the purification of substances. Below students are learning to separate a naturally occurring mixture from the environment. A short subject on forces is to follow, and then we spend the remainder of Term 3 on the classification of living things. The highlight of Term 3 will be a trip to Taronga Zoo, where the students will collect information on various animals. This information will be used to complete an assessment task for the classification subject. For this reason it is important that students attend the excursion. Permission slips are to be handed to classroom teachers and monies are to be paid to Ms Jane or online using the POP code provided.

Last week Burwood Girls High School hosted their annual Year 7 and Year 8 disco. All proceeds from the disco are going towards their charity fundraising program “Hands Across the Ocean”. From all accounts the junior boys had a fun night and the senior students enjoyed the ‘pyjama’ theme. Thank you to everyone involved to ensure the night ran smoothly.
