Failover is a computing term with many applications outside of enterprise printing.

Failover occurs when an active application malfunctions or terminates and a standby system picks up the slack.

Without failover, a single malfunction would stop an entire operation until it was resolved.

When using the Windows Server print spooler, you cannot delete a faulty job to let the other jobs in the queue print.

A faulty job can occur all-too easily, such as when a printer is turned off or a file doesn’t get spooled properly.

If a technician is not promptly notified about the faulty job, it can cause significant delays.

Oftentimes, the only solution is to purge the queue by restarting the spooler service on the server.

This interrupts all the jobs managed by the server, enterprise wide!
