Day Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1 Hong Kong – Bangkok Take the flight to Bangkok and check-in the hotel in Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport by yourself. (Hotel offers 24-hour complimentary shuttle service at Gate 4, Arrival Level. Guest could also access to the hotel by 5-minute

covered walk.) Overnight in Bangkok

Day 2

Bangkok - Paro - Thimphu Take flight to Paro. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your guide. Start a beautiful drive along Pachu and Wangchu Rivers to Thimphu. Later visit the Farmer’s Weekend Market where vendors come from throughout the region. It's an interesting place to visit, where village people jostle with well-heeled Thimphu residents for the best vegetables and other cottage industry products. If the market is not opened, you will visit another spot like the Bhutan’s Contemporary Art Gallery (VAST) or Tashichodzong (the Fortress of the Glorious Religion). In the afternoon, have a private yoga session at the park below the Changlimithang stadium conducted by a yoga teacher. Towards evening we will drive to the Buddha hill to enjoy the great view of Thimphu valley and absorb the sanctity of the gigantic Buddha. Just before dinner take a stroll and explore the capital city’s streets before retiring to your hotel. During dinner, you will be joined by a Guest Speaker who is a specialist on Gross National Happiness. The Guest Speaker will explain the details and engage in discussion. This special session thrives to give more insight and understanding of Bhutan’s GNH philosophy. Overnight in Thimphu (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3

Thimphu Today you will start the day with a cleansing ceremony before breakfast. A renowned Buddhist monk will be requested to conduct the ritual. After breakfast we have a presentation by the expert on colours and its interpretation in Bhutan. The presentation will be about the spiritual journey we are on (especially the participation in rituals, ceremonies and festivals). After a question and answer session we will watch the monks start a mandala using coloured rock powder. You can then construct your own mandalas using colorful seeds as this is a much easier material to handle than rock powder. We will break for lunch and do some sightseeing while the monks complete the mandala. In the afternoon, visit spots like the Institute for Zorig Chusum (commonly known as the Painting School, closed on Sat 1pm, Sun, Govt Holidays, Summer/winter break), Textile Museum, which provides a fascinating insight into the Bhutanese fabrics. You will also be able to witness the art of weaving here. (closed on Sun, Govt. Holidays), and Memorial Chorten. The building of this landmark was originally envisaged by Bhutan’s third king, who had wanted to erect a monument to world peace and prosperity. Completed in 1974 after his untimely death, it is both a memorial to the Late King (“the father of modern Bhutan”), and a monument to peace. By evening when the monks have finished the mandala making. A Buddhist master will grace the occasion and will give a talk on the mandala. We will then destroy the beautifully crafted mandala symbolizing the Buddhist concept of impermanence. Later you could enjoy the spa treatment at the hotel (at own cost). Overnight in Thimphu (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4

Thimphu – Punakha Today we will experience how ordinary people use Dued Rituals to combat spirits that bring illness. The Dued Ritual will take place at Pangrizampa temple, which is also the school of astrology. There will be a talk by the chief astrologer on the use of astrology in Bhutan. Then we will all help the monks in the preparation of the Dued ritual. You will need to bring along one item of old clothes/belongings that will be put in the ritual altar. The benefit of the ritual is to cleanse all the bad/negative interferences from the spirit world. After lunch we drive to Punakha through Dochula pass which is located 3,050 meters above sea level. On clear days, there is a magnificent view of the snow-clad peaks of Bhutan. On arrival, proceed to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple dedicated to the Divine Madman Drukpa Kinley who was famous for his unconventional and provocative methods of teaching Buddhism. It is also a pilgrimage site for women who are not able to conceive children. Overnight in Punakha (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day Itinerary

Day 5

Punakha Enjoy a peaceful walk through paddy fields and hike up to Khamsum Yulley temple perched on a hill top. The temple has a panoramic view overlooking the Mo Chu valley (Total Hike time around 1.5 hrs). Then visit Punakha Dzong which is strategically built at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu river. Punakha Dzong is one of the most beautiful fortresses in Bhutan. Enjoy a simple picnic lunch by the river with great views of the Punakha Dzong.

In the evening, visit Nalanda University, a Buddhist monastic school (shedra). The monks are also taught English, so they will be more than happy to strike a conversation and practice their English skills. Here you will also have the opportunity to observe the monks at a spiritual debate.

Overnight in Punakha (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6

Punakha – Paro After breakfast transfer to Paro. In Paro visit the auspicious Kyichu Lhakhang, a sacred monument pinning down the left foot of a treacherous ogress. This is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan dating back to the 7th century (the other being Jambey Lhakhang in Bumthang. Also visit the National Museum which has an extensive collection of Thankas (religious paintings), flora and fauna, armoury, gigantic copper and bronze pots, jewellery and so on. Later visit a local family at a farmhouse and engage in a conversation over a cup of traditional butter tea.

Overnight in Paro (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7

Paro Today after breakfast, we will walk up to Taktsang - Tiger’s Nest (approx. 2.5 hours uphill and 2.5 hours downhill). Taktsang is a sacred pilgrimage site where the great tantric mystic (Padma Sambhava) mediated in the 8th century. He brought Buddhism to Bhutan. The temples are located on a cliff 900m above the valley floor and are indeed a unique architectural feat in Bhutan. Today we will hang prayer flags with multiple colours along the mountainside. In Bhutan, people relate unhappiness to imbalance of greed, anger, ignorance, ego and jealousy. When colourful prayer flags are hung it is believed to enhance the balance of the above attributes, thus creating happiness. This is also done to wish good tidings to other sentient beings. Walk back down to the road head and return to the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. You could enjoy the spa treatment at the hotel (at own cost). Overnight in Paro (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 Paro – Bangkok – Hong Kong Tashi Delek! Take the flight by own via Bangkok and back to Hong Kong
