You will be learning new psychomotor skills, aeronautical decision-making, along with aeronautical-knowledge subjects such as, aerodynamics, aircraft systems, weather, navigation, and regulations. If you are seeking a private pilot certificate you must also obtain an FAA Student Pilot Certificate and Third Class Medical (more on that in the FAQ section). The Private Pilot Course at TakeWING is regulated under Part 61 of the Federal Aviation Code of Regulation. TakeWING offers both full-time and part-time (flexible scheduling) pilot training. To be accepted into our program you will need to apply and join our aviation club. Curriculum TakeWING uses the Cessna standardized but flexible training curriculum. The Cessna training curriculum is based on the idea that the best way to learn a complex process is by breaking it down into its individual steps. Once you master a step, you build onto it until you are proficient and comfortable with the whole process. The Private Pilot Course is designed using this building block approach. Each task (a task can be a maneuver, procedure or knowledge area) is broken down into steps and builds on the previous task. A group of tasks builds a stage and all the stages build on each other. The Private Pilot course is comprised of three individual training blocks called STAGES. Each stage includes simulator, airplane, and ground study tasks. You must complete all the tasks and objectives in each stage to a required level of proficiency (not just hours) before moving to the next one. Once you have successfully completed all three stages, passed the FAA knowledge test, and passed an FAA practical test (oral and flight) you earn a Private Pilot Certificate. How you will train Using the Cessna Training System, we break the learning process down into Stages, and Phases. Phases include completing web based knowledge labs, flight lessons (scenarios), simulator practice, and ground briefings with your flight instructor. Each flight scenario is broken down into learning new maneuvers and procedures and/or providing you with time to practice and demonstrate your abilities. Your progress is based on you obtaining a level of proficiency appropriate to the objectives of each phase. Your instructor will customize the lessons to your skills and abilities. In general, you will learn each maneuver, procedure, or knowledge area using these steps: Introduce: Studying the course materials and instructor explanation. Explain: Explain the task to your instructor to check your understanding. Simulate: Practice the task in the simulator. Fly: Demonstrate your proficiency of the task in the airplane

How much much does it cost and how long does it take? The training takes an average of one year to 18 months and can costs between $11,000 to $17,000. Why such a range in cost? First, it depends on which aircraft you train in (C172 or the C162) and secondly, pilot training requires applicants to maintain a consistent, training schedule in order to meet or exceed specific skill, knowledge, and proficiency standards.

PRIVATE PILOT COURSE—FAQs FAA PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS To earn your Private Pilot Certificate, you will need to:

• Be a U.S. Citizen or pass a TSA security clearance; • Be at least 17 years old; • Be able to speak, read, write, and understand English; • Get an FAA medical certificate; • Obtained a FAA Student Pilot Certificate: As of April 1 2016, all new student certificates must be vetted by the

TSA prior to being issued. TakeWING charges $35 for submitting your application to the FAA. It can take over three weeks to receive your student pilot certificate from the FAA.

• Pass the Private Pilot knowledge exam; • Complete the Private Pilot flight and ground training requirements(CFARS) and receive an endorsement

from your flight instructor to take the practical exam; • Pass a Private Pilot Practical Test an FAA Pilot Examiner.

Getting Started—Prepare to Takeoff

1- Take an introductory flight lesson (FirstStep™). This lesson provides you with an opportunity to discover your aptitude for flying as well as evaluate our teaching methods. If learning to fly is really for you—you’ll know it by the end of this lesson. If you already have had some previous flight training experience, we can use this as a lesson to evaluate your skills and abilities and for you to evaluate our school.

2- Establish your eligibility. First, make sure you are eligible to receive flight instruction. US Citizens are

eligible but you will need to show us your unexpired US Passport or original Birth Certificate during your school orientation. If you are not a US Citizen you’ll need to get TSA approval before flight training can begin. For more information on TSA requirements go to the FAQ section of this document.

3- Medical eligibility. Please refer to FAA MedXPress for more information.

4- Schedule your orientation: After your first lesson and before you next session, we will need to schedule

an orientation meeting. The orientation session is used to pay for training course materials, club fees, fill out paperwork, and introduce you to our standard operation procedures. It is also a good idea, but not required to make an appointment with the FAA medical examiner to obtain your Third Class Medical Certificate prior to beginning your flight training. For more information on local FAA approved medical examiners go to our FAQ section.

How do I obtain FAA medical Certificate? First, be certain that you are medically eligible for pilot certification. You can be denied for many medical reasons (kidney stones, medications you are taking, drug or alcohol use, DUII, and convictions for motor vehicle actions including refusal of a test to indicate alcohol in the blood when requested by a law enforcement officer.

• Certification Requirements FAA Medical Certificates;

• Aeromedical Standards;

• Offenses involving alcohol or drugs

• Aeromedical Examiner Listing

• FAA MedXpress Application

FAA student pilot certificate: A student pilot certificate is required before you can fly solo. As of April 1, 2016, all new student certificates must be vetted by the TSA prior to being issued a student pilot certificate. TakeWING charges $35 for submitting your application to the FAA. It can take over three weeks to receive your student pilot certificate.

What is the FAA knowledge test (written test)? The private pilot knowledge test is a 60-question computer graded exam on aeronautical subjects. The FAA allows for a 70% minimum grade to pass. We expect at least 90% from our students. TakeWING is a designated FAA Knowledge Testing Center. Your Cessna courseware and your instructor will prepare you for passing this exam. The current cost of this exam is $165.

What is the practical exam? The practical exam is an oral and flight test done by an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). A DPE is an experienced pilot and flight instructor that the FAA has designated to test pilots and issue pilot certificates. The Practical Exam is required by the FAA to ensure all pilots are trained to FAA standards of proficiency as stated in the Practical Test Standards (PTS). A copy of the PTS is included in the resource library we give you when you begin the course.

What if I am not a US citizen? The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires all non-US Citizens to apply for and receive authorization to begin Flight Training that will lead to a new pilot certificate. The TSA calls this the Alien Flight Student Program and includes an online application, finger print submission, photograph, and background check. You can get more information from their web site: Alien Flight Student Program. This process usually takes from 2 to 3 weeks from start to finish assuming no issues come up during the background check. This does add some costs that are not covered in your course fee.

• TSA Alien Student Application Fee: $130 • Finger Printing: About $99 in the US

If you are not a US citizen and are interested in training at TakeWING please call us.
