Port

• A port is a location on a coast or shore containing one or more harbours where ships can dock and transfer people or cargo to or from land. Port locations are selected to optimize access to land and navigable water, for commercial demand, and for shelter from wind and waves. Ports with deeper water are rarer, but can handle larger, more economical ships. Since ports throughout history handled every kind of traffic, support and storage facilities vary widely, may extend for miles, and dominate the local economy. Some ports have an important military role.

biggest peninsulas in the world. It is serviced by 12 major ports, 200 notified minor and intermediate ports. The total 200 non-major ports are in the following States:- Gujarat (42); Maharashtra (48); Tamil Nadu (15); Karnataka (10); Kerala (17); Andhra Pradesh (12); Odisha (13); Goa (5); West Bengal (1); Daman and Diu (2); Lakshadweep (10); Pondicherry (2); and Andaman & Nicobar (23)

Indian Private Ports and Terminal Association• Indian Private Ports & Terminals Association - (IPPTA)is

an association of private ports and terminal operators of container terminals and bulk terminals of India.  IPPTA has been formed to address the need to form a strong representative body of Indian private ports and terminal operators as an industry, which is one of the successful privatization industries in India today. Members of IPPTA, all existing private operators cumulatively represent an investment of more than Rs. 6500 crores in port sector.

Terminals India (GTI) is part of APM Terminals global ports/terminal network. It is a joint venture between APM Terminals and the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR-A Government Of India undertaking). APM Terminals Mumbai (GTI) is one of the three container terminals operating from Nhava Sheva’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) having procured a 30 years license from the Port to provide container handling services at its facility.
