Die Uferzone des Huangpu-Flusses steht seit jeher im Fokus der Stadtentwicklung, Shanghai galt langeZeit besonders wegen der klassizistischen Prachtbauten entlang der Uferpromenade „Bund” als Perle des Ostens.Mit dem Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal wurde die Uferbebauung nun zeitgemäß fortgeführt. In der parkähnlichen Anlage versteckt liegt auch ein kleines, aber außergewöhnliches Bauwerk: Das von SPARCH Architekten entworfene „Gallery Building” mit seiner dreidimensional komponierten Glasfassade. The area along the Huangpu River has been an urban development focus for a long time. Due to to the magnifi cent classical buildings lining the Bund promenade, Shanghai used to be called the “Pearl of the East”. With the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, this architecture in a contemporary vein on the banks of the Huangpu river was continued. Concealed on the park-like grounds is a small but extraordinary building: the “Gallery Building” of SPARCH Architects with its three-dimensional glass façade.

The Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal is

not only a place where Shanghai residents can relax

and hold events in the inner city, it is also a gateway

for tourists from all over the world. Three 80,000-ton

luxury cruise ships dock at its quay. Each year, more

than 1.5 million passengers disembark here.

The 800-meter-long site is north of the Bund. On

the other side of the river are the characteristic

high-rises of the economic zone of Pudong. With-

in the framework of the large-scale Shanghai Port

Development, approximately 260,000 m2 of space

is being developed. In the invitation to tender, the

sponsors established that 50 % of the area should

be designed as publicly accessible park grounds. As

a result, large parts of the space have to be housed

underground.

Das Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal soll

nicht nur als innerstädtischer Erholungs- und Veran-

staltungsort für die Bevölkerung Shanghais dienen,

es ist auch Einfallstor für Touristen aus aller Welt:

an seinem Quai legen gleichzeitig bis zu drei Kreuz-

fahrtschiffe der Luxusklasse mit 80.000 Tonnen an

– jährlich gehen über 1, 5 Millionen Passagiere hier

an Land.

Der 800 m lange Bauplatz liegt nördlich des „Bunds”,

auf der gegenüberliegenden Flussseite erheben sich

die das Stadtbild prägenden Hochhäuser der Son-

derwirtschaftszone von Pudong. Im Rahmen des

groß angelegten Shanghai Port Development sollten

auf diesem Teilstück des Entwicklungsgebietes ca.

260.000 m2 Bebauung untergebracht werden. Die

Auslober legten dabei bereits in der Ausschreibung

fest, dass 50 % der Flächen als öffentlich zugäng-

liche Parkanlage gestaltet werden sollten, große

Teile des Raumprogramms also unterirdisch unter-

gebracht werden mussten.

Den Masterplan für diesen Ausschnitt des Entwick-

lungsgebiets gewann im Jahr 2004 Alsop Design

Ltd. Shanghai Studio. Das in Shanghai ansässige

Designteam wurde im Anschluss schrittweise mit

den Planungen und der Realisierung beauftragt.

2009 fi rmierten die asiatischen Niederlassungen

von Alsop Design Ltd. in SPARCH um.

Der Entwurf für diesen Bereich des Shanghai Port

International Cruise Terminals sieht einzelne, teils

freistehende Gebäuden vor, die durch ihre aus-

drucksstarke Architektursprache, die sorgfältig

detaillierten Glasfassaden und die expressiven

Farbgestaltung zu einer gestalterischen Einheit zu-

sammengefasst werden.

Neben hochwertigen Bürofl ächen, die direkt am

Fluss aneinandergereiht liegen, entwarfen die Ar-

chitekten in zweiter Reihe einen Veranstaltungs-

pavillon, einen Media-Garten, einen Gastrono-

mie-Pavillon und das „Gallery-Building”. Dieses

wird wegen seiner charakteristischen Form auch

„Peanut“ genannt.

The master plan for this part of the development area

was won in 2004 by Alsop Design Ltd. Shanghai

Studio. Subsequently, the Shanghai-based design

team was commissioned to carry out the planning

and implementation in a series of steps. In 2009, the

Asian branches of Alsop Design Ltd. changed their

name to SPARCH.

The design for this area of the Shanghai Port Inter-

national Cruise Terminal envisages individual, some-

times free standing buildings, which form a unit due

to their expressive architectural expression, carefully

detailed glass façades, and impressive coloring.

Apart from the high class offi ce spaces stretching

along the river the architects designed in the sec-

ond row an events pavilion, a media garden, a res-

taurant pavilion, and the gallery building, called the

“Peanut” due to its distinct shape.

Die Galerie in einer Axonometrie:

Das teilweise aufgeständerte Gebäude fällt be-

sonders durch seine außergewöhnlich geformte

Außenhaut auf: große dreieckige Glaselemente,

die ihrerseits aus verschiedenfarbigen Gläsern

bestehen, lassen das Gebäude selbst als kleines

Kunstwerk – als Ausstellungsstück – scheinen. Im

Inneren des Gebäudes ergeben sich durch versetzt

angeordnete Geschossebenen und die ungewöhnli-

che Fassadenstruktur verblüffende Raumeindrücke

und Ausblicke.

Die ungewöhnlichen Fassaden und die Sonderkon-

struktion des aufwändigen Dachtragwerks wurden

von Ingenieurbüro RFR entwickelt. Die Schüco

Sonderkonstruktion aus Aluminium ermöglichte

den Planern große Spannweiten bei größtmöglicher

Vorfertigung und völliger Flexibilität in den Fugen.

Eine solch dreidimensional komponierte Glasfassa-

de wurde in China erstmalig umgesetzt.

The partially elevated building is very conspicu-

ous due its extraordinarily shaped outer skin. Large

triangular glass units, which consist of different-

colored panes, make the building look like a work of

art; an exhibition piece. In the interior of the build-

ing, the offset story levels and the unusual façade

structure create astonishing spatial impressions and

views outside.

The unusual façade and the special construction of

the complex roof structure was developed by RFR

engineers. The Schüco special aluminium construc-

tion enabled large span widths with the greatest

possible prefabrication and complete fl exibility in

the joints. This is the fi rst such three-dimensional

sculptural façade to be implemented in China.

Schüco Sonderkonstruktion

Schüco Special Construction

Bei der Fassade des „Gallery Buildings” handelt es sich um eine speziell für dieses Projekt

entwickelte Sonderkonstruktion ohne Systembezug. Die Fassadenkonstruktion ist somit

Unikat und Prototyp gleichzeitig. Dank dieser Schüco Sonderkonstruktion ließen sich alle

Anforderungen erfüllen, die bei dieser Bauaufgabe und der Komplexität der Geometrie

gestellt wurden: große vertikale Verformungen der Decken und der Stahlunterkonstruktion,

horizontales Verschieben der Decken untereinander, Erdbebensicherheit und zu öffnende

Elemente bei allen vorkommenden Neigungen.

The façade of the gallery building is a non-system-based special construction developed

specifically for this project. The façade design is therefore one of a kind and a prototype.

Thanks to this Schüco special construction, all of the demands could be met that were

made in this complex geometrical building project: large vertical deformations of the ceil-

ings and the steel substructure, horizontal placement of the ceilings under one another,

earthquake security, and units that can open with different inclinations.
