Many known faces, few new ones. Same Hindu Mandir, same Devi vandana. New times, new prayers. Rejuvenated energies and renewed hopes. With these we wish to extend our most warm welcome to new and existing members to our annual Sharodiaya Durgapuja.

This is our 32nd years of Probasi of Charlotte and 10th anniversary of our Durga puja. Flourishing far, far away from Kaashful and drumbeats of Bengal, Probasi has matured to a steady and vibrant Bengali community. But our enthusiasm to celebrate our cultural roots is still as before.

With the same enthusiasm, we are starting our most beloved moment of this year Sharodiaya Durgapuja of 2011. Besides Devi-vandana, we have arranged our an-nual cultural program. Probasi members of all ages toiled hard to present a concise and entertaining program, which will blow your mind. To top that off, we will initi-ate the program with a chorus song coordinated by our next generation member, Treena Chaudhuri followed by songs of Suvodeep & team from Kolkata.

This magazine is compiled from works of our members. We have created a Bengali-oasis so far away from Bengal. Among all the varieties among us, we are still connected by the same cultural thread we still cry with Apu of Pather Pnachali, and smile with Bombagar-er Raja of Abol Tabol. To commemorate and celebrate our rich culture, we extend our hearty invitation to all of our Probasi families and are a vital part of this extended family.

This year we have seen record-breaking fund-raising by superb efforts of some of our key members: Animikh, Animita, Anwesha, Arindam, Ashis, Atul, Haimanti, Rakhee, Sanjay, Swa-pan ,Udayan-da and others. With this finan-cial success, Probasi gained confidence to make some long-awaited changes in our puja arrangements: especially to bring positive changes in cultural programs and food prepa-rations. This year we replace the SOLAR SAAJ of our Protimas with new SAAJ Swapan brought from Kolkata. In addition, we would like to thank our ad-hoc Board of Directors for their guid-ance at the time of making critical decisions. This is everyones puja: your contribution in kinds, however small it seems, is the galva-nizing factor for this function. Together, we will make it a memorable one, as always!

Ding Dong! The ship for the dolphin cruise was leaving. Everyone on board was excited. I sat down trying not to be too close to the rails. Waiting for 5 minutes was really boring . I waited for

another five minutes and started getting impatient but

then the dolphins came into limelight.

The crowd screamed with delight. The first dol-phin had jumped out of the water. But the part of the dolphin that was visible resembled a crescent moon. I could only see the air hole and tail but I felt excited. Later dolphins kept on coming. We saw packs of 2, 3, and even 4. We passed the Shelter Cove Marina and sped deeper into the Atlantic Ocean. The sky started getting as black as coal. Even that did not leave me worried.

A few minutes later the boat turned back. We had taken around 45 minutes to come here so it would take 45 to go back. Then within a few seconds it started sprinkling rain. In the middle of the ocean it was rain-ing! I went inside trying to keep myself warm and then started the worst storm I ever encountered.

Rain hit hard on the churning ocean waves and lightning missed the boat by inches. One of the other sailboats was hard hit and its mast and sail were broken. It was stranded out in the open sea. This was the most frightening day in my life. Could we get back home? Would the driver be able to see? Would we reach home alive? All these questions were spiraling around my head which made me crazy. The sky was getting bluer but the rain was still pouring in full force. I closed my eyes and prayed to God. After about an hour the rain had stopped. We were nearing the dock. I rushed down the steps to the first floor. As soon as we touched the dock I got off. Everything was good. Hilton Head has always something new for me.

Last November we lost Apurba Rakkhit, our beloved friend and founder member of Probasi of Charlotte. This year we lost S. P. Subrama-nian (father of Probasi member Mahesh Subra-manium) and Binapani Saha (mother of Probasi member Dhononjoy Saha). Words seem inad-equate to express the sadness we feel.

It was the monsoon season in a diamond harbor neighborhood. It was late at night when Hori was returning home from tuition. It was pitch dark due to load shedding and the roads were very muddy after the afternoons downpour. Somebody had left a banana skin on the road and it so happened that providence had predetermined that Horis left foot would fall on the banana skin just when he would turn his torch to the wall of the adjacent building to try and take a glance at the movie poster that was pasted there to check the timing for the next week-ends show of Batman Begins.

Splash was the sound that nobody heard as Hori landed face down on the mud. He remembered the trailer of the movie where Bruce Wayne was thrown to the muddy ground but in slow motion he would keep getting up. Suddenly Hori was Wayne and somehow things were moving slow around him, seemed he could con-trol time. Wait a min, he thought to himself, this is Batman, not Harry Potter or Back to the Future forget controlling time time to flex muscles and fight the bad guys.

He cleared his mind of any lingering thoughts of time travel or time control and, still in slow motion, got up to his feet. He could feel the bulging mus-cles and could almost hear his shirt sleeves tear apart as they could no longer hold his muscles in place.

Yet something was missing thats it I need a cape, thought Hori. He looked around and saw a deserted pan dokan with the black plastic rain cover still hanging. Perfect, thought Hori, and he draped the black plastic around him. Does this also make me invisible, he wondered but his mind quickly course corrected Dude its Batman not Harry Potter.

In his excitement of being just crowned a super-hero, he forgot about the torch which lay on the ground throwing light on his caped torso that cre-ated an umbra and penumbra on the front wall, the shadow created by the laws of physics was 3 times his size.

At the same time from the other end, parar Chichkey Chor group was in action.

Their leader Ranj-an Gul was busy with his gang in cleaning out some kitchen utensils and notun pujor sari from Banerjee kakus house which was empty as the residents had gone to Darjeeling for kali pujo.

Ranj-an and his gang had their hands full with lots of potlas and couldnt really see well in the front they walked on intuition and they also dared not turn on the torch.

As they slid past the col-lapsible gate they froze

as they could see a shadow of a big caped figure coming towards them. It looked ominous in the dark and suddenly Ranj-an Gul remembered his thakuma warning him that evening as he left his house -Aamabashyar rathey beroshna bhuter raja dhorbey, he had brushed the statement off as mindless senile banter.

His companions waited as they always do when Ranj-an Gul stops and look for direction from him. Aajker maal ta chhere de bujhli, bhooter raja dekhe fele chhey amader. Aamabashya raat ey bhuter raja ashey shuneychi.

Abar chichkey chor ra attack korechey, thought Hori, If only I could have picked a fight with them, I would have reduced them to pulp tonight bechey galo ora. He closed the collapsible gate and made a mental note to call Banerjee kaku when he reached home, and started walk-ing homewards.

Arey torch ta no nilamna remembered Hori, so he turned back to get it. In the midst of his sprint Ranj-an Gul turned around to see if bhooter raja was following them and thankfully he saw him backing away.

The next morning the sun came out and as Hori was walking towards the bus stop, Gopal stopped his bicycle to tell him Janish Ranjan da kalkey raat ey bhoot dekhechey Banerjee kakur barir kachhey. Hori immediately new what he was talking about and he took the opportunity to say Bhoot na re, ota Bhootman amiyo dekhlam amar shongey kotha bollo je o naki eyi parar choreder bondi banabey.

And thus was born a legend that kept perpetra-tors at bay for years to come

It was August when Baba, Mama, Rahul and I went to Austin on a plane. In the plane I played some games and slept for a long time.

Mesho picked us up from the airport and we went to Aishees apartment. Aishee is my cousin sister. That day we played in Aishees room.

Next day we all got into Meshos car and went to visit a cave. We got some candy first and waited for our turn to enter. When it was our turn our guide Mr.Joe told us we couldnt get any food or drinks into the cave.

We got onto a small bus and sat on a bench and the bus took us into the cave. When we sat on the bus it was very hot and it became cool inside the cave.

I saw a lot of rocks. I saw rocks hanging from the ceiling, some of them looked like ice cream cones. I saw two shoes between the rocks and thought someone was stuck there. Mr. Joe said its just pretend, not real.

Mr. Joe said not to touch the rocks except the dry one. If we touched the other rocks they may die and not grow. Some rocks looked like carrots and grapes.

Mr.Joe also showed us a story in the rocks. Once upon a time there was a princess, a king, a queen and a knight. The knight wanted to marry the princess. The king said he can only marry the princess if he killed the dragon. The knight said he would do it and he killed the dragon. Now the knight could marry the princess. Mr. Joes showed us rocks that looked like a princess, a king, a queen, a knight and a dragon just like the story.

I also saw some paintings in the walls of the cave. One of the paintings was that of a mammoth the great great great grandfather of the elephants.

I also saw some water puddles and Mr.Joe said the water is 100% clean and that we can drink it.

We then went to an ice cream room where there were lots of rocks that looked like ice creams sandwich and cones.

After that we went to the imagine room and saw lots of rocks that looked like real things.

After a long walk in the cave we got on to the bus and got out of the cave. Then we went into the car and came back home. We had lots of fun in the cave and we took lots of pictures.

While Im talking about Rabi-ndranath Tagore, youre probably thinking, what does she THINK about him? What is her views about his this person she was just talking about? One of the things I love about this poem is the title!!! When I first looked through his collec-tion of poems, this poem instantly shouted at me Pick Me! Pick Me! I fell in love with it!!!One of the reasons I worship this poem is it goes into depth about nature, making you feel as if you were almost the cloud itself. Where did he get all this inspiration? Maybe he was looking at the clouds one day, and thought of the idea, or it just came into his mind? It still remains a mystery to me today .All in all; I think Rabindranath Tagore is a god-gifted and talented poet.

MusicOne of Rabindranaths music quotes is: Music fills the infinite between two souls. He has writ-ten much admirable music for the Bengali culture. Writing the national anthem for India (which you should know by the way is Jana Gana Mana) can be tricky, unless you would like to object. He also wrote the national anthem for Bangladesh, Amar Shonar Bangla. There are so many astonishing works of music by Rabindranath Tagore, and I am grateful that he has written so mush MUSIC!!! We can dance, sing, and enjoy all that music coming from that stunning brain!

Today, Rabindranath Tagore is 125 years old. We respect, and judge him, yes, but he is very brilliant, and without him, I dont think we could do much. No matter where you go to watch a program, Rabindranath Tagore will always have something to do with the program. Whether its the music, the plays, or people reading poems, he will definitely keep influencing the Indian cul-ture, and how we roll.

I sit here every day. I dont move, but listen. Sometimes I think that I have seen too much. I feel that maybe I wasnt supposed to witness certain things. Horrible things. Sad things. A child who has lost his mother. A dog

injured and abused. I sit here and ponder on, but am help-

less because I cannot help. I cannot move. I am a tree, in a

park. Every day I see things, but I can do nothing.

He was sitting on the bench by the bushes away from everyone, scribbling in his notebook. His clever-ness and wits were dangerous. He was smart, and has gotten away with this many a time. He had an itch to kill. No sense of what he was doing. No reason. Just the want, just the crave.

Pictures of Annabelle were taped into his book. He had noted down everything about her. Only four-teen years old, in the ninth grade. Athletic, and friend-ly, loved by many. That is why he wanted this job done. He knew everything about her. Where she went,

what she did.

He was curled up around his notebook, prevent-ing anyone from seeing it. He was staring at her pic-ture, his pencil in one hand tapping against the bench seat. Her brunette hair framing her face, a beautiful faade. He knew how to trap her. He knew what she would agree to. He knew how to get the job done.

He laid the notebook down on the bench next to him, and threw his warm sweater over it. He left it there as he walked over to the newsstand by the foun-tain. He bought a crisp, new newspaper and sat down next to his things. She was on the front page. Her arm wrapped around her sisters, both of them smiling in-nocently. They had tied in the state final swim meet, both of them going to the nationals. This was the per-fect place to strike. People from all over will be there, making this more difficult and more interesting for him. He scribbled some more, glancing at her picture once more. He was ready to kill. He was ready to end her life, and then move on to the next.

And I cannot do anything to help. I am a tree, in a park. Every day I see, but I can do nothing. I am help-less because I cannot help.

The worlds third largest religion with over five hundred million followers.

It is believed that Hinduism is the oldest of all religions.

However, Hinduism is not a religion in the nor-mal sense, but it is a set of traditions and beliefs evolved over a long period of time

It began in India. Hinduism has no known founder or date of origin.

However, the first sacred writings of Hinduism, which date to about 1200 BC. A more philosophi-cal focus began to develop around 700 BC, with the Upanishads and development of the Vedanta philosophy. Around 500 BC, several new belief systems sprouted from Hinduism, most signifi-cantly Buddhism and Jainism.

Over two-thirds of its followers live in India.

No single scripture or single prophet to follow.

No central organization or authority to control the movements or progress.

Does not require its adherents to accept any one idea, and thus, is considered culture.

Known for its attitude, attitude of tolerance, of ac-commodating other religious and cultural perspec-tives into their own.

Hinduism is thought to have gotten its name from the Persian word hindu, meaning river, used by outsiders to describe the people of the Indus (Sindhu) River Valley.

Hindus themselves refer to their religion as sanatama dharma, eternal religion, and varnas-ramadharma, a word emphasizing the fulfillment of duties (dharma) appropriate to ones class (varna) and stage of life (asrama).

The fundamental concepts of Hinduism are:

Belief in the ultimate reality called Brahman (universal soul) and its identification with the Aatman (individual soul).

All creatures go through a cycle of birth and re-birth.

The status of the being in each birth is deter-mined by the principle of Karma.

Hinduism: some tidbits that everyone should know

Karma - the law of cause and effect; what you do in this life will affect the next life.

The Karma can be broken only by self-real-ization, and the being is said to be attained Moksha (liberation).

Reincarnation - the soul is born again and again until it finds freedom and that the soul of every person has lived since the beginning of time.

Puja (alternative spelling pooja; Sanskrit: rever-

ence or worship) is a religious ritual seen as a way of relating humans to the domain and actions of the divine, and can be performed for anything considered divine, from Vishnu to a holy tree and anywhere from home to temple.
