Page 2: Probiotics and prebiotics

ProbioticsProbiotics are live microorganisms that can positively impact your health. There are many types of probiotics:o lactobacilli (like Lactobacillus acidophilus and

Lactobacillus GG).o bifidobacteria (like Bifidobacterium bifidus) ando some yeasts (like Saccharomyces boulardii.)

Different probiotics have different effects. So while one may help treat diarrhea or an infection, another may have no effect.

Prebiotics Prebiotics are substances that

encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria

+ Prebiotics are non-digestible ingredients in foods that are used to spur the growth of probiotic bacteria in the body by providing a suitable environment in which the probiotics themselves can flourish.

what are the sources of them? Probiotics are found in nutritional supplements or foods such as yogurt, fermented and unfermented milk and buttermilk, some fermented cheeses, miso, and some juices, soy drinks and in products that contain live and active cultures such as Lactobacillus. Prebiotics classified as functional food ingredients are inulin-type fructans. Inulin-type fructans are used as sugar substitutes, fat replacer and are used in some products such as fermented dairy products, jellies, ice creams, cookies, breads, pastries, spreads, and infant formulas.

What Are the Benefits of Probiotics & Prebiotics?

1. Increased calcium absorption and enhanced bone density and strength.

2. Enhanced immune function in both the gut and body.

3. Stronger and healthier bacterial balance in the gut. 4. Improved bowel regularity, bulking and softness. 5. Leaky Gut and Toxins. Prebiotics strengthened the

bowel wall and reduced permeability (leaky gut) with reduced toxin absorption.

Page 7: Probiotics and prebiotics

6. Reduced risk of intestinal infection.7. Appetite suppressant due to increased

blood hormones that reduce the sense of hunger.

8. Reduced risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.9. Reduced risk and/or improvement in

digestive inflammation-Crohns Disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

10.Reduced risk of colon cancer.

Although research is ongoing, there's good evidence that some probiotics may be helpful in treating: irritable bowel syndromesome types of diarrhea, colitis (particularly ulcerative colitis and including the difficult to treat "pouchitis" found in ulcerative colitis), certain types of stomach ulcers (those caused by H. pylori), acne, and eczema in children. They may also be used with antibiotics to help prevent diarrhea that may come with taking antibiotics

Are there risks to taking them? Some studies have shown many health benefits of them, more research still needs to be done to be sure that they are safe and effective as a supplement and in foods. This is especially true for children, pregnant women, elderly people, and people with compromised immune systems. For people with suppressed immune systems due to disease or treatment for a disease (such as cancer chemotherapy), taking them may actually increase your chances of getting sick. Always speak with your doctor before taking any supplement under these circumstances.

But , they have few side effects. Some may cause: Intestinal gas and bloating.

However, this is likely to get better over time. If your probiotics & prebiotics are causing these side effects, try decreasing the dose or using it every other day.

Interactions

They could interact with medicines such as antibiotics or immunosuppressive drugs.

Page 12: Probiotics and prebiotics

What’s the best way to take them?

They are come in many forms: • capsules • powders• Liquids• Foods such as yogurt and dairy

drinks

Page 13: Probiotics and prebiotics

How much should I take?To be effective, probiotics must contain enough beneficial organisms to al low them to grow in the intestines. An effective dose varies widely among different probiotic products, however. And some probiotic products may not contain as many beneficial organisms as their labels say.

Do You Take Prebiotics & Probiotics at the Same Time?

d Both prebiotics and probiotics need to be a regular part of your diet in order to provide health benefits, they do not need to be taken at the same time. Consult a health care provider before taking probiotic or symbiotic supplements.

dSymbiotic :- products combine probiotics and prebiotics to enhance their beneficial effects.

Page 15: Probiotics and prebiotics

How long should I use probiotics? That depends on the reason why you are taking them

1 .PREBIOTICS are a special form of dietary fiber

2. PREBIOTIC POWDERS ARE NOT AFFECTED BY HEAT, COLD, ACID OR TIME.

PREBIOTIC VS PROBIOTICPREBIOTIC PROBIOTIC

1. PROBIOTICS are live bacteria in yogurt, dairy products and pills. There are hundreds of probiotic species available. Which of the hundreds of available probiotics is best is still unknown.2. PROBIOTIC BACTERIA MUST BE KEPT ALIVE. THEY MAY BE KILLED BY HEAT, STOMACH ACID OR SIMPLY DIE WITH TIME.

Page 17: Probiotics and prebiotics

3 .PREBIOTICS provide a wide range of health benefits to the otherwise healthy person. Most of these have been medically proven.

4. PREBIOTICS NOURISH THE GOOD BACTERIA THAT EVERYONE ALREADY HAS IN THEIR GUT.

3. PROBIOTICS are still not clearly known to provide health benefits to the otherwise healthy. Some are suspected but still not proven.

4. PROBIOTICS MUST COMPETE WITH THE OVER 1000 BACTERIA SPECIES ALREADY IN THE GUT.

Page 18: Probiotics and prebiotics

5 .PREBIOTICS may be helpful or preventative for irritable bowel (IBS), or inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s Disease,Ulcerative Colitis), colon polyps and cancer and those people with a leaky gut.

5. Certain PROBIOTIC species have been shown to be helpful for irritable bowel disease and for recurrence of certain bowel infections such as C. difficile.
