The English language is changing. Nowadays there are more non-native speakers of English than native speakers. This seems to be having a dramatic effect on how English is perceived in the workplace. Studies show that in European corporations native speakers are often perceived as less trustworthy than non-native speakers (Haarlem). As a consequence, being a native speaker of English can now be a disadvantage in some business situations. Nevertheless, there are other instances where native speakers are necessary to ensure that correct corporate messages are disseminated. In order to restore the status of English, it is therefore imperative senior managers recognize that accurate, native-speaker English is vital for successful and effective business communications.
