Middle-class gain most as they can shop around for best school and move into that area (post-code lottery) which poorer families can’t

Middle-class are more likely to be able to be able to understand and take the time to read Ofsted reports, league tables and appeals procedure

Middle-classes can afford transport costs to better schools outside their catchment area

If more middle-class children gain entry to better schools then this ‘forces’ working-class children to attend less successful schools. Just think of The Grange, Twynham and Highcliffe! It’s difficult to improve The Grange as no middle-class parent wants to send their child there!

Schools want to attract more able children so their league ranking improves and so less able children might be discouraged from attending (just think of our 6th Form entry requirements)!!!

The emphasis on testing with SATS is making teachers teach to the test rather than offering a more stimulating curriculum. This is because of the need of schools to move higher up the league tables.
