Page 7 Proctored Mock CAT-3 2012

Direction for questions 35 to 37: The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose themost appropriate answer to each question.

In the ‘God Delusion’ Richard Dawkins talks about our inherent psychological tendency towards logicalfallacies. He references cargo cults, tribes that formed superstitious beliefs around the arrival of US soldiersupon their islands. They believed that communicating on the radio, and marching in unison were all ritualsthat brought precious gifts from the heavens in the form of supplies that came in by airplane to the island. They saw what to them looked like strange ceremonial dancing when the soldiers were marching, and theirlogic was that this was a ritual to be performed to please the gods who then bought goods beyond theirwildest dreams. They saw that A came before B, and made the logical fallacy that A caused B.

Genus Homo have possessed logical reasoning skills for millennia, however we have not always possessedthe knowledge upon which to base them. Logic works when based in knowledge, and this is an evolutionaryadvantage. When our ancestors saw the prints of an animal in the sand, they had the capacity ofunderstanding that an animal had been there - and this was reasoning based upon knowledge, we knewwhat kind of prints a certain animal would make, and we could deduce from seeing the print which directionthe animal was going in . This was useful in both hunting and avoiding predators.

As our knowledge increased we realized what causes disease, and what can be done to prevent it, weknow how to engineer our way out of famine with our knowledge of crops and fertilizers. The failed logic ofold has been abandoned. Logic is a powerful tool when combined with knowledge, but without it, it canmisfire and lead one to believe things that are unreasonable, and often harmful.

The fact that superstition is so prevalent in our species would seem to suggest that it is of evolutionaryorigin, and this is something that Dawkins discusses in the God Delusion. He argues that we havean intuitive dualism - which is the propensity to believe that there is a separation between the mind andbody. Stating that dualists have a tendency to “personify inanimate physical objects at the slightestopportunity, seeing spirits and demons even in waterfalls and clouds.” He talks about how we assignagents where there are none, getting angry at traffic lights as though they are personally out to get you, forexample.

Knowledge and reason are the best tools we have for advancing our species both morally and scientifically.Superstition causes many people to act in ways that a person possessing the facts simply could not.People who believe crystals have magic properties, people who believe that certain diets can cure cancer, people who believe that homosexuality is an abomination, people who believe in ridiculous conspiracytheories... The list goes on. None of these beliefs are based in knowledge, and the logic behind them isflawed. It’s time to move on, we don’t need to appease gods in order to ensure we won’t get smallpox; weconquered it with the practical application of knowledge and reason.

35. The author gives the example of the Cargo Cults to highlight which of the following?(a) Understanding the wider picture does not necessarily lead to knowledge.(b) What we see may sometimes not be what we are meant to see.(c) Understanding without knowledge leads to logic becoming a fallacy.(d) All of the above

36. The main idea of the passage is to(a) explain the reason behind superstition and to denounce it.(b) welcome the realization that failed logic is not good.(c) highlight that logic is powerful when combined with knowledge.(d) explain how dualism sometimes misleads us in absence of logic.

Which of the following behaviors is the author not likely to label superstitious?(a) A cricketer blaming the number on his jersey for missing out on a century.(b) A student blaming his/her leaking pen for failure in exams.(c) A doctor certifying to the healing touch of prayers.(d) None of the above

38. There are eight boxes and each box contains seven gold coins. Each coin in one of the boxesweighs 12 grams and each coin in the rest of the seven boxes weighs 10 grams. What is theminimum number of weighings required to identify the box containing 12 gram coins using anelectronic weighing machine?(a) 1 (b) 5 (c) 7 (d) 3

Direction for questions 39 to 41: The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose themost appropriate answer to each question.

The preoccupation with vitality involves establishing different kinds of limits or boundaries to respectivelydifferent kinds of relations of vitality. Humans draw a distinction between their own children and those ofanother. One usually does not love another’s children as if they were one’s own. And one does not usuallylove another nation as if it were one’s own. Such a limitation on the recognition of, and the love for, what isunderstood to be one’s own is a consequence of the preoccupation with the continuation of the self, bothits biological and cultural components. The love that one has for one’s nation is designated by the term‘patriotism’.

The widely used term ‘love’ as an expression of the attachments that the individual has to his or her nationis not altogether satisfactory because we also employ the same term to describe the attachments one hasto one’s paramour, children, friends, and god. Indeed, some individuals have genuinely loved all of humanity. What such a wide use of the term indicates is that, in each of these instances, the individual puts aside,or ‘transcends’, his or her own self-interest for the sake of others. However, understanding properly thecharacter of such attachments should take into account not only the act of Self-transcendence common toall of these attachments, but also the different objects of those attachments. Thus, it may be more helpfulto distinguish the love for one’s paramour or children from the ‘love’ for one’s nation by understandingpatriotism as signifying attachments of loyalty to a territorial community. There are often different aspectsto the patriotic attachments that one forms to one’s nation, as a consequence of the different factorsinvolved in the historical formation of a particular nation. One may, for example, be loyal to one’s nationbecause of its laws, or its customs, or its religion. There are usually many and differing, even conflicting, views of the nation that correspond to these different factors. However, inescapable is the fact that theindividual often shows a preference for his or her fellow nationals. This preference need not take the form ofa prejudice against, or hatred of, those who are not members of one’s nation. Patriotism need not denyvarying and different pursuits by the members of the nation. It need not reject differing conceptions of thenation held by members of the nation, as nationalism often does. Indeed, in so far as patriotism implies acommitment to the well-being of one’s country, it provides the basis for working out the differences, involvingreasonable compromise, between the individual members of the nation and their differing conceptions ofwhat the nation should be out of a concern for promoting that well-being. The process of working out thesedifferences through compromise is politics. The concern for the well-being of the nation that includes thewillingness to compromise is central to the civility between the members of the nation that makes politicspossible.

Page 9: Proc 3 Question

39. The author is likely to agree with which of the following statements?(a) One’s love for oneself leads to love for one’s children and nation.(b) The love for one’s nation depends on the love for one’s children.(c) Patriotism like nationalism rejects differing conceptions of the nation held by its members.(d) Patriotism arises only when one transcends his/her self-interests.

40. According to the author what is the genesis of politics?(a) The concern for the well-being of the nation.(b) Patriotism, because it involves the working out of differences involving compromises between

members of a nation to promote its well-being.(c) Nationalism because it is the historical formation of a nation.(d) The different aspects of patriotic attachments that one forms to one’s nation.

41. Which of the following is in line with the author’s concept of love?A. The term love has lost its true meaning as it is now freely bandied around.B. Love indicates setting aside or transcending one’s self interest for the sake of others.C. Patriotism, not love, is a more appropriate term to define what we feel for our country as it

implies self-transcendence.D. Love is defined by the idea of extension of oneself and not by the property of the element being

loved.

Direction for questions 45 to 47: The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose themost appropriate answer to each question.

Nobody can tell in advance whether any given work of political thought will have the effect of Hobbes’sLeviathan or Rousseau’s Social Contract, or to take a later example, Marx and Engels’s The CommunistManifesto. It depends entirely on whether the underlying shift in thinking that the philosopher proposescorresponds to political and social change in such a way that the new ideas can become the commonplacesof the following generations. Other works of political philosophy have enjoyed a limited success and thendisappeared virtually without trace. But the need for political philosophy is always there, especially perhapsat moments when we face new political challenges that we cannot deal with using the conventional wisdomof the day. At these moments we need to dig deeper, to probe the basis of our political beliefs, and it is herethat we may turn to political philosophy, not perhaps at source, but as filtered through pamphlets, magazines, newspapers and the like – every successful political philosopher has relied on media-friendly disciples toput his or her ideas into circulation. But even if political philosophy answers to a genuine need, are its owncredentials genuine? Political philosophy claims that it can bring to us a kind of truth about politics, something different from the opinions that guide us from day to day. This claim was presented mostdramatically by Plato, often regarded as the father of the subject, through the allegory of the cave in theRepublic. Plato likens ordinary people to prisoners who have been chained in a cave in such a way thatthey can only see the shadows of things on a screen in front of them. Plato says that these shadows werethe only real things.

Now suppose that one of the prisoners was to be freed and emerged blinking into the light. In time he wouldcome to see real objects in the world, and understand that what he had seen before were no more thanshadows. But if he were then to return to the cave to try to persuade his fellows of their mistake, they wouldbe unlikely to believe him. This, Plato thinks, is the position of the philosopher: he has genuine knowledgewhile those around him have only distorted opinions, but because the path to philosophical knowledge islong and hard, very few are willing to take it.

But was Plato justified in drawing such a sharp contrast between philosophical knowledge and commonopinion? My conception of political philosophy does not involve endowing philosophers with a special kindof knowledge not available to other human beings. Instead they think and reason in much the same way aseveryone else, but they do so more critically and more systematically. They take less for granted. It iseasiest to explain this by an example. Suppose we were to ask a politician what his goals were; what aimsor values the political community he belongs to should be trying to achieve. If he belonged to a contemporaryWestern society, he would probably come up with a fairly predictable list: law and order, individual liberty, economic growth, full employment, and one or two others. How might a political philosopher respond tothis? Well, first of all she would turn the spotlight on the goals themselves and ask which of them reallyultimate goals were.
