... work on the development and production of healthy food

With the increasing awareness of our daily

diet, there is also an increasing demand for

specialists that are trained in the field of food

science and technology. The new developments

in this area include products like Becel and

Yakult. But innovation does not have to stop

there. Continuously scientists and engineers

work hard on improving food products in many

different ways. It is not unthinkable that in time

more food can be produced that actually has an

added health benefit, dismissing public enemies

like coronary heart disease and diabetes to the

past. As a process and food techno-logist you

could make the world considerably healthier.

Process and Food TechnologyBachelor of Applied Science

Key elementsnn A three or four-year Bachelor’s programme taught entirely in

Englishnn A high-level, solid academic grounding with a strong focus on

practical skillsnn Strong business and industry links with opportunities for

international work placements in multinational companiesnn An opportunity to develop the cutting-edge knowledge, experience

and skills that technologists neednn An opportunity to work with other highly-motivated students from

diverse backgrounds

Process and Food Technology

Most of our everyday needs, like medicines, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints, gadgets, gasoline, energy and food and drink are made through (bio) chemical processes. The world’s biggest multinationals are looking for people with the skills you will develop on the Process and Food Technology (PFT) programme to produce them.

Your learning experienceThe Process and Food Technology programme takes four years, but we also offer a fast-track, three-year version. Each year is divided into two semesters, and each semester into two terms of 10 weeks. The programme focuses on seven themes: food products and processing; inorganic products; water treatment; organic products; responsible industrial operation; (food) polymer technology; and (food/chemical) process technology. You will acquire hands-on experience using equipment like reactors and distillation towers.

Tuition covers technology sciences like maths, physics and chemistry and we will improve your presentation, reporting and communication skills.

We regularly liaise with nearby multinationals like Shell and Unilever to make sure that our curriculum reflects the real world. Students complete the programme with a specialisation and a minor followed by a consultancy assignment for a real organisation.

Career prospectsOur PFT graduates are in demand in the market. As a PFT graduate you will have endless career opportunities in industry, government and even education. Process and food technologists can create household materials like plastics and paint, or develop new flavours of ice cream, fizzy drinks and snacks.

You might be asked to produce a new product on a large scale under strict hygienic conditions or solve manufacturing problems. You may find yourself designing industrial processes or equipment for an engineering company. You might end up working with the government as a health and safety or environment specialist.

We have connections with all kinds of businesses here in the Netherlands and internationally. Shell, Unilever, Numico, Heineken, Albemarle and Sara Lee/Douwe Egberts are just a few of the names you will hear during classes.

The specialisation you choose depends on the type of professional you want to be. At first you may think of a profession/occupation where the emphasis is on general process engineering, requiring organizational and management skills. You have an interest in dealing with people and organizational aspects. In industry you

can operate as a general process engineer, who ensures an optimal process operation or you can work for the government on regulatory services (environment, health, etc.). As a person you are practical from nature (process failure should be avoided), you’re more a generalist than a specialist and difficult technical problems you prefer to let the “experts” in that area (e.g., staff services) solve.

A second form of profession/occupation is that, which further technical development and depth is required. Your work often requires that you must consult the study books again because a particular technical problem has to be solved. You find technical problems challenging rather than difficult. The competencies you should develop focus on technological and problem solving skills. Naturally you need to collaborate and deal properly with people, but you are primarily valued because you understand your profession and solve technical problems. You should think of functions within the industry, where the focus is on continuous improvement of the process and an optimal performance of the equipments. Furthermore, there are opportunities in development centres (R & D) of larger enterprises and of course in Engineering companies and/or Contractors (A contractor designs and builds the plant and often does the start-up).

Entrance and costs To enrol on the four-year programme, you will need the high school diploma equivalent of a Dutch HAVO, such as a US high school diploma. To enrol in the three-year programme, you need the equivalent of a higher level Dutch VWO diploma such as an International Baccalaureate, German Abitur or three British A-levels at grade C or higher. Other diplomas may also be acceptable and these will be evaluated upon application. The Process and Food Technology programme also requires experience in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. More details are available on our website at www.thehagueuniversity.nl

Please check our website for the most up-to-date informationon tuition fees and other costs.

How to register and further informationThe application process will depend on which country you are from as well as your diplomas. Students with a Dutch diploma should go to http://dehaagsehogeschool.studielink.nl for details on how to apply. Students with a non-Dutch diploma can find all the application criteria on our website www.thehagueuniversity.nl/enrolment. For more information on the application process you can also contact the Enrolment Centre on +31 (0)70 445 85 85 or by

filling in the online contact form at www.thehagueuniversity.com/enrolment-contact-form.

English language skillsSince our international Bachelor programmes are taught entirely in English, you will need a good command of the English language, both spoken and written. Bachelor candidates who were educated in Holland, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada, Australia, New-Zealand, South Africa or Malta need not take an English proficiency test. All other prospective students are required to hand in a valid and sufficient TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEIC, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or Cambridge ESOL (CAE/CPE) certificate to the Enrolment Centre.

If you have not quite reached the level you need to enrol for a degree but your results are promising, we offer an English Prep School programme, which takes six months or one year. On completion of this, you will not only be ready to join a Bachelor, but you’ll also have learned a lot about Holland, The Hague and our university.

The minimum language requirements are provided in the tables below.

The Hague and The Netherlands

The Hague is a great place to live and study, an excellent city for doing business and an inter-national diplomatic crossroads. It is the political capital of the Netherlands and residence of the royal family. The International Criminal Court, the Peace Palace, the War Crimes Tribunal and Europol are just a few of the organisations that contribute to The Hague’s reputation as an inter-national city of peace, justice and security. There is something for everyone in The Hague. Marvel at the historic architecture, soak up the sun on the sandy beaches, or walk in the steps of Mondriaan and Vermeer. The Hague offers all the benefits of a big city with a small town feel. It is also home to large numbers of companies and organisations with international influence. Internationally renowned businesses like Shell and Siemens have headquarters in The Hague.

The Hague Universityof Applied SciencesOur 22,000 students come from all over the world (more than 146 dif-ferent nationalities!!). It is a diverse and lively group. Our students can choose from more than 50 different programmes and make use of the excellent facilities that the univer-sity has to offer.

We focus on you, your work and leisure time. Our cutting edge library, computer facilities and science labs will help ease your study. We have several restau-rants, extensive sports facilities and student lounges where you can unwind and make new friends.

The Hague is central to Europe’s largest port and two international airports.

The Netherlands enjoys a strategic geographi-cal position and is often called ‘the gateway to Europe’. As a result there is a strong international flavour, particularly in the country’s western urban conurbation (the ‘Randstad’), of which The Hague is a central part. Almost everybody speaks English.
