PGC2000 Series – Process Gas Chromatograph

A Gas Chromatograph – Built On A Foundation Of Leadership

ABB manufactured and sold the firston-line process gas chromatograph in1957. In the decades since, ABB hascontinually advanced its process GCtechnology leadership. Now, ABB isleading the way into the 21st Centurywith the PGC2000 series of processgas chromatographs.

The PGC2000 is the second generationof Vista on-line process GC’s. ABB PGCanalyzers have set a new standard forease of use, quality and reliability. ThePGC2000 has also raised process GCtechnical standards, with more compactsize, improved serviceability, superiorconnectivity and digital analyticalcontrol.

A More Compact Design For Greater Space Savings

The PGC2000 has a significantlysmaller footprint than competitivedesigns. The analyzer is only 19.5inches (496 mm) wide. For most configurations, there are no compo-nents, tubing or wiring on the leftside. That saves even more space ininstallation. Analyzer-to-analyzer spac-ing has been reduced by over 19inches (482 mm), significantly reduc-ing the required shelter space formulti-analyzer systems.

Improved Serviceability

The PGC2000 uses an integrated back-plane that eliminates wiring harnessesand terminal strips. All subsystemssuch as temperature controllers, detec-tor amplifiers, sensors, and options are assigned specific, clearly labeledplug locations. This self-documentingconcept greatly improves serviceabilityand upgrade ability. It also improvesquality and reliability by eliminatingloose wiring connections and allowingcomponents and modules to be testedbefore system installation.

Superior VistaNET2.0 Connectivity

Integration of the PGC2000 into the process control loop is readilyachieved with the ABB VistaNET2.0Integrated Process Analyzer NetworkArchitecture. VistaNET2.0 is an econo-mical single-wire solution that enablesseamless connectivity to existingEthernet-based systems.

With VistaNET2.0 all process analyticalequipment can share the same net-work for data exchange, with controlsystems and higher-level processes, ina true distributed network architecture.VistaNET2.0 provides plant engineers, maintenance engineers and other datausers with a common platform for datacollection, presentation and analysis.

Digital Analytical Control Functions

The PGC2000 offers standard digitaltemperature and optional digitalpressure control. With digital controls, temperature and pressure can beset directly at the analyzer keypad orremotely via VistaNET2.0 Digital controlreproduces temperature and pressuresettings far more precisely than analogtemperature controls or mechanicalpressure regulators. The optional electronic pressure con-trol improves chromatography by pro-viding better resolution, exceptionalretention time stability, and faster ana-lysis time. Ambient temperature, carriersupply, and barometric pressure effectsare reduced, greatly improving ana-lyzer stability. Analytical flows canvary for different methods within thesame analyzer, enabling a wider rangeof on-line and at-line applications.Carrier gas consumption can be mini-mized by turning carrier flow offwhen not needed and by reducing oreliminating split flows and flows tovent during portions of the analysis.

Ease Of Operation

The PGC2000 Series offers a fast learn-ing curve with minimal training. Ana-lyzers can be placed on-line and kepton-line with a minimum amount oftime spent learning the programming. The PGC2000’s menu-driven interface, front panel keypad and 5.6 inch (142mm) diagonal graphics display allowusers to easily change, modify or editall analysis parameters. All front panelfunctions are also available at any net-work PC via VistaNET2.0 This allowsoperating personnel to concentrate onthe analytical aspects of the applica-tion instead of electronic/programmingconcerns.

A World Class Analyzer Meets World Standards

The PGC2000 Series is designed fromthe ground up to meet current andemerging international standards suchas CE, ATEX, CSA, and NEC/NRTL. In most cases, the standard configura-tion meets all required internationalstandards, minimizing analyzer variantsand assuring consistent performanceand safety.

Real-Time VistaBASIC

Flexibility and integration are criticalto a process chromatograph. ABB’sVistaBASIC language provides additi-onal flexibility in meeting customerapplication requirements. Real-timeVistaBASIC allows the chromatogra-phic controller to be used in a super-visory capacity to monitor sample sys-tems and interface with other devicesin more complex remote-controlledsystems.

VistaBASIC virtually eliminates the needfor a PLC in complex discrete samplingsystems. VistaBASIC provides interana-lyzer communications, where measu-rement values from one analyzer areused in calculations on another, viaVistaNET2.0

While VistaBASIC can be used forthese more sophisticated analyzersolutions, BASIC programming skillsare not required for typical analyzerapplications. Common uses forVistaBASIC include calculated valuesderived from measured componentvalves, such as heating value (BTU).VistaBASIC provides the tools for cus-tom extensions to the chromatographcontroller’s capabilities and providesfull access to the extensive I/O of theVista controller.

Specialized PGC2000 Series

In addition to the standard PGC2000,ABB Analytical offers severalspecialty process gas chromato-graphs:

Analytical Detectors

The ABB Flame Ionization Detectorprovides extreme sensitivity for ppmhydrocarbons and is individuallyheated as required by the application.

The ABB Thermal Conductivity Detec-tor is suited for general purpose ana-lytical measurements, normally in thepercent ranges, but may be applied tomeasurements down to hundreds ofppm in some applications. It may alsobe individually heated when requiredby the application.

The Flame Photometric Detector is thethird ABB designed detector available. It is selective for analysis of sulphurlevels down to very low ppm.
