Welcome to UPPC! If this is your first visit, we are so glad you are here. In fact, we believe God brought you here today! Take a few minutes to read this bulletin to find out about some of the ministries going on at the church - getting involved is the best way to meet people and connect. We’d also love to have you stop by the Welcome Center (just outside the Sanctuary doors) after service. There is someone available to answer questions about the church as well as let you know more about ministries and opportunities available for you and your family. We hope this morning is meaningful and rejuvenating for you! I’ll also acquaint you with a handy guide to Bible translations and resources as you continue exploring the Bible, and the way God has self-revealed in its pages. God’s willingness to be revealed to the world is so important that there is an entire book of the Bible named “Revelation.” Over the centuries, the book of Revelation has inspired many, perplexed others, and maybe scared some people out of their wits! N.T. Wright and Michael Bird write: “Revelation is a strange book, nearly as strange as some of its readers. People have found in Revelation a dramatic account of the cosmic struggle of the church against the satan, a powerful consolation that God will one day end all suffering, a timetable for the end times, a mirror of the tyrants and turmoil of their own day, or — in many cases — a montage of pictures that they simply do not understand.” So why did God choose to reveal it to John? How would the original audience have heard it? And what are we to make of it today? This general overview of the book is meant to awaken your imagination, inspire you to read more, and of course bring this teaching series to a dramatic finish. Friends,

It’s amazing to me how quickly seven weeks can fly by, but this week is the last of our series, “Lost in Translation(s).” We’ve learned a lot in this brief overview of the Bible, and today I’m looking forward to summarizing some of the key principles we’ve learned.

A BIBLE TOOL KITThe #1 tool: Good Bible TranslationsHere are eight common English translations of the Bible, on a continuum based on their translation approach.

• On the left is “Word for Word,” (“Essentially Literal”) where the aim is to stay close to the form and literal meaning of the original languages, without attempting to bridge historical or cultural distance.

• On the right is “Thought for Thought,” where the aim is to retain the ideas in the original languages, while also offering help to the reader by updating idioms, language, or style.

Other ToolsThe Church: Pastors Aaron and Mike love helping inquisitive disciples explore the Bible. Come in to explore our commentaries, Bible dictionaries, and other resources. The Library: If you know how to navigate a theological library, it’s an invaluable storehouse of more material for Bible study than you could read in a lifetime! Try exploring a local university library, for example. The Internet: It’s right at your fingertips, and it can be tempting to just “google” answers to your Bible questions. But not all answers are good ones. Online Bible study tools we have found helpful are:

BibleGateway.com: its search features and parallel versions make this site a helpful one when you’re searching for particular words or phrases, or want to compare versions.BibleHub.com: its concordance (dictionary), language studies, and commentaries are a good starting place for being your own Bible explorer.
