Anthony Brindisi Part 1: Building upon the listening skills you've developed, clear your mind, relax, focus, and play each record for yourself. Make notes and answer the questions found in Lesson 13. Include the following in your comprehensive analysis: The artist, song title, and genre Radiohead - “All I Need” - Experimental Rock Your detailed emotional responses. This song always has a special place in me. It’s the song that reminds me of all of the broken relationships and lost love. To be honest, I start to loose my interest when it reaches the dynamic climax. I use the song in a much more therapeutic way, so when the drums come in full blast I start to loose track of why I’m listening to it in the first place. An analysis of your perception of the artist's identity, vision, and intention as related to this record. The singer is clearly struggling with major details of his life and relationships. I believe his vision for the song was to prove to the person he lost how much they meant to him, as well as to portray all of the ways he feels without that person. An analysis of the lyric, the specific images it created in your mind, and how the lyric related to the emotions conveyed. One of the images that stuck very clearly in my mind was, “I am a moth who just wants to share your light.” This image of insects sharing a light and bringing things together is essentially what the song could be considered about. The performer is saying it loud and clear. “You’re all I need.” An analysis of the melody, and how it contributed to the emotion of the record. “You are all I need” is an escalating melody that brings out the tortured yearning of the performer. The melody of the verses on the other hand, are mostly descending melodies, giving way for the melody to reach the point where it can begin to escalate again. An analysis of the use of repetition, and how it contributed to the emotion of the record. Repetition is used constantly in this song. It’s in the melody, the bass, and the drums. There are several verses, all that begin with, “I am...” that could depict how he see’s himself, or how he believes other people see him. Also, “It’s all wrong, It’s all right” is a strange way for him to use repetition and contradiction in an effective way. An analysis of the groove, and its contribution to the record's emotional impact. The groove is very laid back for the most part of the song, and in a way, is pulled back in the mix until it really starts to blast off. Repetition is used immensely in this drum part, as it barely changes for about 3 minutes (2:55) until the groove finally becomes heavier. Analyze the kick drum and bass parts if these two elements are present.

  • As far as the bass and kick are concerned, the snare on the + of 4 sets up the kick on 1 which is primarily the pattern the bass uses when it corresponds with the drums.

    Examine whether and/or how the Pain/Pleasure Paradox contributes to the record's emotional make-up.

    This song could be the poster child of the pain/ pleasure paradox. Its a song about loss and memory. Someone needing someone else in their life who they may never find.

    List the form for the track you have chosen, and write your detailed observations about the instrumental arrangement next to each section.

    Analyze the mix in terms of focus, focal point, vocal placement, the placement of elements in the stereo field, and the balance of the high end, midrange, and low end.

    The Pads tend to move around from center to right and left quite oftenThe Bass, and drums are dead center, Its almost bizarre, I cant tell why they would mix them in performers perspective, everything is right in the front, snare, kick, and hat. When the drums change groove around 3 minutes in they pan the crash to the right a bit, but thats truley it.The melody is center as it should be, and contains a ton of reverb. All ends of the spectrum are covered. The high end by synths and strings, the melody covering the mid range, and the bass and synth bass covering the bottom end. Everything is well balanced and clear.

  • Part 2:Present the records to a volunteer. Make notes about your volunteers kinesthetic responses without making him/her feel like they are under a microscope.     I felt like I was listening to the record for the first time again. It was kind of strange having someone watch me listening to music so I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the ride. I was paying a lot of attention to the Bass part, but the Melody was what drove it home for me. The song is so desperate and full of yearning. I was almost on the verge of tears

    Your speculations as to how your subject's preconceived opinions, tastes, and prejudices about music may or may not have contributed to their responses.

    I think she tried to leave behind her preconceived notions behind and listen to the record with fresh ears. Once she got into the track she started to sway to the beat and tap her foot, so I knew that she was at least interested in it.
