Produced by the ROANOKE ISLAND HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION, INC.

The Lost Colony is produced by the Roanoke Island Historical Association, Inc. (RIHA). It is Ameri-

ca's longest running symphonic outdoor drama, located on Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks of North

Carolina. We are a non-profit historical and educational corporation as identified by Section 501 (c) 3 of

the Internal Revenue Service Code. Since 1937, RIHA has produced The Lost Colony to celebrate the history of the first permanent

English colony on Roanoke Island, North Carolina (1587), through drama, education, and literature. Our

compelling story of vision, determination, and inspiration recounts the trials and tribulations of England's

first attempts to colonize the New World and their interactions with the Native Americans. We present

the drama, written by North Carolina’s Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green, each summer (June through

August) at the Waterside Theatre at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site operated by the National Park

Service Outer Banks Group. The Lost Colony is supported by admissions, memberships, contributions, corporate sponsorships,

grants, state and local funds, a generous corps of volunteers, and the cooperation of the National Park

Service. The experience of our theatre patrons is our first priority. Our story is brought to life each

summer by talented and impassioned actors and technicians and enhanced by our beautiful setting on

Roanoke Sound, where the actual events of history took place over 400 years ago.

America’s Premiere Outdoor Drama

Dear Fellow Travelers,

Do you feel the mystery? Has a sense of history surrounded you? Does the rustle of ancient oaks echo with

cries of early settlers? Does the rumble of native drumbeats haunt the night air? Can you feel the arm of

history beckon you to explore America’s greatest unsolved mystery?

What happened here more than four centuries ago? What of those 85 men, 17 women and 13 children? What

are we to make of the letters CRO carved into a tree near where we come together tonight?

And why do we care? Pioneering English settlers were not first to inhabit this land. Native tribes thrived

throughout the region and lived with a strong sense of social order. To the south, Spain established settlements

in St. Augustine by 1565, almost two decades before the English took possession of where we are gathered.

How best to understand The Lost Colony? Our story is a dramatic interpretation drawn from historic records

and conjecture, eloquently blended with poetry and music and dance by Pulitzer Prize-Winning North

Carolinian, Paul Green. Take a moment to see sculptor William Hipp III’s bust of Paul Green at the rear of

Waterside Theatre.

Now in its 81st summer season, The Lost Colony began as the vision of area residents unselfishly committed

to preserving the story of Virginia Dare and those early English colonists who endured the 5,000-mile journey

to new lives in a mysterious, unknown world. That same spirit continues to inspire subsequent generations of

directors of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, a non-governmental nonprofit. Together, with an

annual company of more than 120 artistic leaders, actors, singers, dancers, technicians and theatre managers,

we are honored and humbled to keep the dream alive.

To appreciate tonight’s performance further, we encourage you to continue pursuing the mystery of the Lost

Colony. Stop by the National Park Service Visitor’s Center adjacent to Waterside Theatre. Visit other

Roanoke Island attractions. Linger in downtown Manteo. Learn about iconic lighthouses that dot the Outer

Banks. See where Orville and Wilbur Wright in 1903 inaugurated the era of powered flight. And enjoy miles

of the finest family beaches.

Thank you for attending The Lost Colony. We hope you will let your imagination wrestle with how you would

solve America’s greatest unsolved mystery!

Regards,

William P. Massey

Bob Knowles Award

Stephen Turner

2018 was Stephen's fourth season at The Lost Colony. He is originally

from Piedmont, Alabama where he graduated with a degree in

Mechanical Design.

The Bob Knowles Award recognizes outstanding professionalism and

artistic integrity within The Lost Colony production. The award honors

Robert “Bob” Knowles who dedicated 25 years to The Lost Colony as

production coordinator, associate producer, and general manager.

Cora Mae Basnight Scholarship

Bethany Johnson

A Texas native, Bethany has happily traveled more than 1,700 miles to perform at the Waterside Theatre to serve three consecutive seasons at The Lost Colony. She took on the role of a Choir Member and each year added responsibilities such as Dance Swing, Choir Captain, and Understudy for the role of Eleanor Dare. She was also featured as the Lullaby Soloist for two of her three seasons. Bethany has studied music and dance nearly all her life, and thus went on to pursue Musical Theatre and Dance at West Texas A&M University. She is extremely thankful for every opportunity The Lost Colony has provided her, but still calls the town of Manteo “home”.

The Cora Mae Basnight Scholarship is awarded to the company

member who has exhibited distinction in music; dedication to excellence in

a theatrical musical performance; commitment to The Lost Colony; and

professional conduct on and offstage. The scholarship is named for the

late Cora Mae Basnight, a gifted pianist and The Lost Colony’s most

famous Agona.

Bradford Fearing Producers Award

Don Bridge

2018 was Don’s fourteenth season with The Lost Colony. He played Old Tom from 1992-97, returning in 1999 to play Captain Ananias Dare, 2003 in the role of Governor John White and Father Martin in 2011-12 and 2015. This was his third year as The Historian. He has written and directed for The Lost Colony Children's Theater as well. The Colony has always been a family affair for Don. His wife Lisa Bridge played Queen Elizabeth for seven years and their children Max and Alice were part of the show for six years in the 1990s.

Terry Snead

Terry has logged in over 1000 performances with The Lost Colony.

Right out of grad school in 1978, he began under director Joe Layton

playing the Historian in The Lost Colony. After a long history in shows and

movies around the nation, in 2006, Lady Jane McCullough, the director,

says, "Read Gov. White for me." 27 years later was truly was coming

home for me. I've been lucky to have great directors, Robert Richmond

and Ira David Wood guiding me as Gov. White in 2006, 07, 08, 11, 12,

Historian again 2013 then White in 2014, and 2016 to now.

The Bradford Fearing Award is presented to a company member or a

fulltime Roanoke Island Historical Association employee for outstanding

merit or contribution to The Lost Colony. The award honors the late

Bradford Fearing, the “guiding genius of The Lost Colony”, who contacted

playwright Paul Green and urged him to write his first outdoor symphonic

historical drama.

Evelyn Russell Layton Award

Emily Asbury

A native of Barboursville, WV and a Otterbein University graduate, this

was Emily's fourth summer playing Queen Elizabeth, I. She has performed

in three national tours with the Chamber Theatre of Boston, presenting

(director 1964 to 1984) to honor his wife, the late Evelyn Russell Layton.

The purpose of this distinguished award is to recognize a promising

theatrical talent and to assist the recipient while beginning a professional

career .

OUR SUPPORTERS

The Roanoke Island Historical Association’s list of appreciation and gratitude grows greater with every year! Our

81st Anniversary was blessed by many wonderful supporters.

In 2017, PNC became The Lost Colony’s first Title Sponsor, and we are extremely grateful that PNC continued this

sponsorship for the 81st Season. Their funding and support gives children 5 & under the opportunity to attend a

The Lost Colony performance free; and assists with production expenses immensely. For the 5th year, ACE Outer

Banks generously sponsored our successful children’s theatre show – The Hunting of the Snark. Carolina Designs

continued to sponsor the four free Mystery of the Lost Colony performances at the Duck Amphitheatre. This

amazing show for young audiences was reworked into a touring program and was presented this fall to elementary

schools in Currituck, Hyde and Chowan-Edenton counties by a generous grant from Dominion Energy; and to Pitt

County elementary schools through a Wells Fargo grant. Walmart Kitty Hawk once again gifted RIHA with a grant for

amenities at Morrison Grove Apartment for our company members.

Basnight’s Lone Cedar Café catered a sumptuous spread for The Lost Colony’s Opening Night Reception, which

was beautifully decorated by Holiday House Weddings & Events, with linens and our red carpet donated by Metro

House Rentals. Lost Colony Brewery, City Beverage and Pepsi graciously donated beverages to the event. Co-

sponsored by PNC, these sponsors and partners make our Opening Night a very special evening! The Dunes

Restaurant catered the opening night and closing night parties for the company members, generously sharing their

southern cooking and hospitality.

The Midgett Insurance Agency once again sponsored Dare Nights; the first three Friday evenings in June when

Dare County residents are invited to attend a performance free with a donation of nonperishables for our

community’s local food banks. First National Bank sponsored the celebration of Virginia Dare’s birthday with the

annual Virginia Dare Faire and Baby Night, a beloved tradition for many in the community. The Virginia Dare Faire,

a free family fun festival, was held in partnership with the National Park Service. Jewelry by Gail generously created

and donated the five gold charms for each Virginia Dare baby chosen. Avenue Waterfront Grille continues to

sponsor our Annual Membership Meeting at their restaurant, even after enduring several months of hardship from

being closed due to a burst water line. And, one of our long-time wishes was gifted from Food Lion; a 6 passenger

Club Car which was used extensively throughout The Lost Colony season and for our fundraising event, The Lost

Colony Wine and Culinary Festival.

OUR SUPPORTERS

The second annual The Lost Colony Wine & Culinary event was just amazing! Blessed with great weather, the event not only raised more than last year but nearly doubled our anticipated budget! Virginia Dare Winery was the lead and Royal Sponsor. We are grateful to The Family Coppola for their commitment to The Lost Colony and the Wine & Culinary Festival, and for their generous funding, donation of wines, auction items and expertise. We are also grateful to the many sponsors and individuals who passionately joined RIHA in making this large-scale fundraising event successful, and support the future of The Lost Colony: Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, PCL Civil Constructors, TowneBank OBX and Towne Insurance, Food Lion, First National Bank, Midgett Insurance Agency, Outer Banks Insurance Agency, Peak Resources Outer Banks, Jane Webster, Oasis Suites/Hatchell Concrete, Southern Bank, Kellogg Supply, First Bank, Shoshin Technologies, Island X-pertees, OBX Chevrolet Buick, Outer Banks Hospital, Mr. & Mrs. John Ennis, Lib Fearing, Outer Banks Heating & Cooling, Outer Banks Media and Pepsi Bottling Ventures. And to our Hospitality Sponsors: Days Inn Oceanfront and Days Inn Suites Mariner, Pirate’s Cove Realty, First Colony Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Oasis Suites, Ramada Plaza, Roanoke Island Inn, See Sea Motel, Tarheel Motel and White Doe Inn. We want to express our appreciation to Cindy McGann, Chef Sam McGann, the Guest Chefs from Durham, NC and all the restaurants, breweries, wine distributors, suppliers and wineries for their participation and generosity in “one of the best events of the year – for a second year in a row!” Our most heartfelt thank you to our donors and supporters who help us fulfill our Mission and make The Lost Colony production come to life each year. We couldn’t do this work without you, and for that, we are forever grateful.
