What started as a glass factory in Iittala,
Finland, today celebrates generations
of essential objects that are distinctive,
combinable and multi-functional. Inspired
by the progressive philosophy of our design
heroes, such as Kaj Franck and Alvar
Aalto, we bring quality, aesthetics and
functionality to our work.
It´s what we do, what we offer, what we
believe in. And like all great stories, it is
defined by colourful characters and thought-
provoking ideas. Enjoy and be inspired.
4
At Iittala, we take a different
approach to design. We make
objects for meaningful occasions.
We also want you to experience
enduring quality every day, in items
that look beyond the latest trend.

Alvar Aalto Collection
Since 1936
The Aalto vase dates back to
1936 and was first presented at
the Paris World Fair the following
year. Its fluid, organic form is still
mouth blown today at the Iittala
factory. It takes a team of seven
skilled craftsmen working as one
to create one Aalto vase – an
icon of modern design.

Ruutu
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
2015
Created by Ronan and Erwan
Bouroullec, the Ruutu (which
means “diamond” in Finnish)
vase might be simple in shape
but it takes the most skilled
craftsmen in the glass factory to
produce. The vases are mouth-
blown into a steel mold and
polished by hand. Each vase is
a simplified masterpiece taking
seven craftsmen and twenty-four
hours to produce in the Iittala
glass factory.
The fluidity and vibrant feel of
the mouth-blown glass creates
the delicate character of the
Ruutu vase.
Ateenan aamu

3-set
Ateenan Aamu
Kaj Franck 1953
Kaj Franck created Ateenan
Aamu (Morning in Athens) after
being inspired by the beauty of
Greece. The sculpture is made
of glass pendants and when
moved by the wind, the delicate
bubbles make a soft, melodic
sound reminiscent of church
bells ringing in Athens on a
Sunday morning.

Annual Cube
Oiva Toikka 2017
Since 1977, the Annual Cube has
been an outstanding example
of Iittala’s glass-coloring
expertise and the skill of its
glass-blowers. Oiva Toikka uses
the ‘paperweight’ technique
to create private, microscopic
worlds, each suspended in an
internal space.

Birds by Toikka
Oiva Toikka 1972
Oiva Toikka’s iconic collection of
Iittala Birds by Toikka first took
flight back in 1972. The collection
embodies a rich fusion of glass-
making traditions and would
not have been possible without
Toikka’s hands-on-approach
at the glassworks and his keen
understanding of each employee’s
skills. Drawing from nature and
his passion for art glass, Toikka
has created more than 500 birds
birds in the last forty years.
These lovely little creatures are
individually mouth-blown making
them a unique treasure in homes,
offices or any other space where
they nest.

Nappula
Matti Klenell 2012
The Nappula candleholder
was born when designer Matti
Klenell visited the Nuutajärvi
glass museum and fell in love
with an unusually shaped table.
Inspired by its distinctive design,
he created a selection of modern
candleholders. Available in
brass as well as selected colors
in powder coated steel, they
combine his love of vintage and
modern forms. As well as being
incredibly practical, they’re
already icons in the making.

Festivo
Timo Sarpaneva 1966
Timo Sarpaneva originally
designed the Festivo candle
holder as a wine glass for himself.
His goal was to be able to fit an
entire bottle of wine into a single
glass. The result was a rough
surfaced, ice-like glass with the
bowl and base sections blown
separately. One day when noticing
the base sections sitting on their
own in the factory, they were
inspired to turn them into candle
holders and so the prototype of
a new classic was born.
Fire
Nathalie Lahdenmäki 2001
Inspired by the glowing snow
lanterns that light Finnish
houses during the winter,
designer Nathalie Lahdenmäki
sought to recreate them in her
Fire series. She manipulated
ceramic foam in an entirely new
way to create a warm, glowing
fire every day of the year.

Kastehelmi
Oiva Toikka 1964
The Finnish name ‘dewdrop’
refers to the circles of bubbles
in the pressed glass. Inspired
by Finnish nature, the dewdrops
glisten like a string of pearls on
grass in the morning sun. Oiva
Toikka’s love for experimentation
led to the creation of an entirely
new droplet design for Kastehelmi.
The resulting surface structure
brings out the living, reflective
beauty of the glass.

Tanssi
Pattern by
Klaus Haapaniemi 2015
Design by
Heikki Orvola 2006
An invitation to dance. The Tanssi
design by Klaus Haapaniemi is
full of colourful inhabitants of a
mystical forest. The design was
inspired by The Cunning Little
Vixen, a Czech opera which is a
sad yet beautiful story of the co-
existence of animals and humans
and the eternal cycle of life. The
rich details of the design lead
the beholder to various worlds.

Ultima Thule
Tapio Wirkkala 1968
Inspired by the melting ice in
Lapland, Wirkkala originally
created the surface in the
1960s after carving into a
graphic mould. An exclusive
design reflecting the thousands
of hours spent perfecting
the glass-blowing technique
required to produce the effect.
The patterns gradually change
as the glass burns the surface
of the wooden moulds.

Aarne
Göran Hongell 1948
This mouth-blown object
originally helped set the
trend for essential glassware
in the 1950s. Glass designer
and decorative artist Göran
Hongell was one of the
pioneers of the Finnish glass
tradition. With his mouth-
blown glassware range Aarne,
he won the gold medal in 1954
at the Triennale in Milan.
Tapio
Tapio Wirkkala 1952
With his signature Tapio series,
Wirkkala’s master technique
captures a bubble in every
glass, a small reminder to
enjoy the fleeting moment.
Each glass bubble in the base
is hand-made with a wooden
stick only when the glass is at
the correct temperature and
consistency.
