1 Introduction to the Aastra BluStar Application Server
The Aastra BluStar Application Server (BAS) is an integral part of the Aastra BluStar VideoConference and Collaboration solution. Delivering true HD video conferencing and powerful
collaboration capabilities, the Aastra BluStar solution enables lifelike video images to be delivered tothe desktop. Extensive multi-way video conferencing and collaboration features make communicatingremotely as natural as being face-to-face, reduces travel needs, and increases employee productivity.
The BAS combines with Aastra BluStar endpoints and forms part of the BluStar Ecosystem, which iscomprised of devices and clients including the award winning BluStar 8000i Desktop Media phone,BluStar for PC, BluStar for iPad and BluStar for iPhone.
The BAS is the heart of the BluStar standalone solution and acts as the command center for thesolution. Open standards based, using SIP call control and H.264 video, the BAS application providesenhanced conferencing and collaboration capabilities such as multi-way video conferencing, PCdesktop sharing (simultaneously with video calling), and network-wide bandwidth management.

2 Functionality
2.1 System Overview
The Aastra BAS is the heart of the BluStar standalone solution. The BAS acts as the commandcenter for the solution providing advanced conferencing and collaboration features. It comes pre-installed with the BluStar Application software and is easy to configure and deploy in an IP network.

2.1.1 Multi -way Conferencing & Collaboration
The BAS solution is ideal for small team collaboration with up to 11 participants being displayed onBluStar 8000is during multi-way video conference calls. Sharing desktop content with participants is
intuitively easy and promotes collaboration and increased productivity.
The advanced design of the BluStar solution avoids the need for costly Multipoint Control Units(MCUs) to be deployed, which reduces overall system setup costs, and, avoids quality impactingencoding/decoding and associated increased latency when an MCU is deployed.
2.2 BAS Server Architecture
2.2.1 Hardware
The BAS is built on an industrial grade rack mountable Intel server. Each server is equipped withquad-core processors, onboard hard disk and DVD/CD drives and internal DDR3 memory. The BASprovides a powerful platform that meets the processing needs of the BluStar Application.
The standard server configuration is a single server BluStar Appl ication Server (BAS).
Also available is aHigh Availability BluStar Application Server (HA BAS). An HA BASconfigurationconsists of two identical single node servers networked together via a null modemcable. The HA capability is activated via special configuration of the BluStar Application firmwareonce the two servers are connected. Note that BAS user licensing also reflects HA or single nodeconfiguration and users need to order the appropriate license type to match the server configuration.
HA configuration provides redundancy of servers, system configuration and user data ensuring addedreliability for large systems or mission critical deployments.

2.2.2 Software
The BAS comes pre-installed with the Linux operating system with appropriate BIOS settings and lowlevel system configuration completed. The BluStar Application firmware also comes pre-installed.
Note: No system or network configuration or licensing will be installed. Currently the BluStarApplication is not virtualized and must run on the specified Aastra BAS.

2.4 BAS Features and Functionality
2.4.1 Management Interfaces
The BluStar Application firmware is a sophisticated application with an extensive feature set yet iseasy to configure and administer.
The BAS provides remote console access and Web-based access for purposes of administration and
configuration. Remote console access is provided via a SSH connection. Initial server configurationrequires a monitor and keyboard be connected directly to the BAS to set the initial network settings.The primary management and administration interface is the Web UI and provides a highly accessibleand intuitively easy user interface.
The BluStar Application supports multiple access levels for administrators with varying levels ofaccess rights. The concept of User Roles gives greater flexibility to BAS administration as well astraceability of changes to users.

Menu Bar
The Menu Bar is the main launching point for all the administration web pages. The icons displayedon the Menu Bar vary with the role the user uses to login. For the default admin user, all icons on theMenu Bar are available. These include:

When one of the Menu Bar icons is selected, the main functional area displays a submenu of theoptions available for the chosen Menu Bar item.
Navigation Bar
When the user selects an option from either the Menu Bar or a submenu the Navigation Bar changes
adding a link to the chosen menu (or submenu) item. This enables the user to jump back up the menutree to a previous menu option. The user can also click on the Home icon to be taken back to thewelcome screen.
Logout Link
Clicking this link logs out the current user and returns the user to the Login Screen.

A submenu contains icons that, when selected, display either another submenu or a form.

Forms are used to display and edit data.

This area provides information about the product the user interface is managing, the version of theproduct, the name of the currently logged in user as well as the role the user is currently logged inwith.
2.4.1.2 Web UI Interface For Users
The BluStar Application enables pre-configured users access to some user specific data and featuresthat are managed on the BAS. For example, users can manage their password, contacts and call
forwarding rules via a Web interface called My BluStar.
Users simply point their browser to the BAS URL and log into My BluStar via their device usercredentials.
Users can then personally manage their contacts, conferences, call forwarding rules, passwords andmore.
2.4.2 User Account Management
User accounts are independent of devices or clients used and provisioned on the BAS. In addition to
the traditional add, delete, edit, and view options, the BluStar Application firmware offersadministrators the option to create and manage Groups of Users. User Groups enable configurationparameters to be applied to the group and inherited by users of that group.
Additionally, administrators can view the status of user connections and device or client details beingused by the user. They can also view all registered users and call history statistics.
2.4.3 Device Management
The BluStar Application is Web UI based and provides powerful and easy-to-use device managementoptions. Devices and clients can be configured to connect to the BAS independent of which User is touse the device or client. The BluStar Application firmware enables devices and clients to be
effectively managed through dedicated sections of the Web UI, thus controlling their registration andproviding a number of security options to control connectivity as well as facilitating the managementof firmware upgrades for BluStar 8000i devices.

The BAS stores BluStar 8000i firmware images and has several upgrade options such asautomatically pushing upgrades at specific times or enabling manual upgrades initiated from thedevice itself.
The Group concept extends to devices as well as Users, providing administrators more options to
manage devices.
2.4.4 Services
2.4.4.1 Routing Rules
Routing rules provides the ability to manage routing of calls to and from the BAS to other devicesand/or call managers (PBX) and dial plan type features. The Regular Expressions rules providepowerful options to modify URI and dialed digit strings and well as match and route type rules.Multiple rules can be applied and the option is available to apply rules based on the origin of the URL(i.e. Global or Local relates to URL domain relative to BAS).
A built-in Test Facility has been provided to test the configured set of rules to assist administrators invalidating their configuration. By entering the expected string to be received by the BAS, the testfacility will highlight the matching rules and the resulting actions that the rule will take.
2.4.4.2 VPN Server
Remote users face many challenges connecting to corporate networks, especially with feature richdevices that utilize multiple video streams, connections to LDAP servers as well as having tonegotiate the challenges of NAT, firewalls, media routing, etc.
The BluStar Application firmware has built-in capabilities that remove all such challenges and makesetting up remote users a simple task. There are two significant capabilities supporting ease of
deployment for remote users:
1. Initial connectivity does not require a VPN connection:
An 8000i device can connect via the internet to a BAS server and then an administrator
can remotely set up the VPN connection. Simply drop ship an 8000i (no complex pre-
configuration) and point the 8000i to the BAS URI. Thereafter the BAS implements all
necessary configurations on the remote 8000i device.
2. OpenVPN server built into the BAS with automated configuration of remote devices:
Enables administrators to setup a VPN connection to any 8000i device (no pre-licensing of
specific MACs or device configuration). The BAS server handles all authentication,certificates, SSL/TLS key exchange, etc.
The VPN connection to the BAS is supported for BluStar 8000i devices only. By virtue of VPNconnectivity, an 8000i device will have a corporate IP address allocated and effectively be on thenetwork. This enables all 8000i features to be accessible (e.g. multi-way conferencing, LDAP,bandwidth management).
Note: VPN licensing is required to activate this feature. Remote bandwidth connections may stillconstrain multi-way conference options.
2.4.4.3 Bandwidth Management
HD video and non-HD video requires significant network bandwidth. As bandwidth availabilitydecreases the challenges to maintain high quality video increase. With multi-way video conferencingthe challenges and potential bandwidth consumption can increase significantly.

The BluStar Application has a Bandwidth Manager (BWM) that enables administrators to control theamount of network bandwidth available for video calling to help manage their networks.
Bandwidth Manager
The Bandwidth Manager (BWM) built into the BAS application has sophisticated features that canautomatically control the per call bandwidth and what actions to take when limits are reached.
Consider a multi-site deployment where the IP bandwidth available for video calling is differentbetween sites. Calls to and from sites need to allow for the available bandwidth both egressing fromone site and ingressing to another. Calls within the same site may benefit from a LAN with muchhigher bandwidth and so the BluStar BWM can automatically calculate how much bandwidth toallocate on a call based on the complete network topology. This maximizes the video calling qualityand user experience but does so within administrator assigned, network-wide bandwidth allocations.
The bandwidth manager can be based on individual IP addresses or a range of IP addresses. Thispowerful capability is an essential tool to successfully deploy and manage a multi-site video
conferencing solution.
Bandwidth Manager and the BluStar Ecosystem
The BWM controls all the BluStar Ecosystem of devices, clients and Apps. On each call setup, theBWM assesses available bandwidth and the configured bandwidth management policies. The BWMthen sets the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) rates to optimize video quality and to match desiredpolicy limits. When new participants are added in multi-way conference calls, the BWM recalculatesand re-establishes the required Tx and Rx rates.
All BluStar enabled devices and clients can be configured to control the desired quality andbandwidth settings. Local device settings will take priority until BWM-defined not to exceed limits arereached. This capability enables local control to address temporary conditions without exceedingadministrator-defined limits.
The BluStar 8000i also supports the ability to have asymmetrical connections, where the transmit ratecan be different from the received rate. This is especially useful for remote users that typically havehigh downstream bandwidth and lower upstream bandwidth. Asymmetrical channels can be utilizedwith peer-to-peer and multi-way BluStar 8000i conference calls.
2.4.4.4 License Management
The BluStar Application firmware has a number of features to help manage system licenses. Licensefiles containing license keys are first installed via the Web UI. Device and Server licenses can then beviewed to confirm installation and status. When licenses are exceeded, appropriate warningindications are given to indicate attempts to exceed limits enforced via licensing.
Note: Licenses are tied to the MAC address of the first Ethernet port of the BAS server. Uponpurchase, Aastra provides access to license files containing license keys. Currently all licensetypes issued are perpetual.
2.4.5 Platform Management
The BluStar Application comes complete with extensive tools to help successfully manage andmonitor the platform.
The platform subsection of the Web UI provides the functionality for managing the BAS platform,including viewing logs, enabling automatic monitoring of the server, defining static routes, and viewingsystem information.

The sophisticated features include ability for notifications and alerts via e-mail, SNMP traps, and logfiles. Monitoring of platform status includes disk space, operating temperature, HA failovers,bandwidth utilization levels as well as device centric events such as user logins and failed logins.
2.4.5.1 Backup/Restore
The BluStar Application has the ability to manually backup all configuration and database data as wellas a feature to automate the backup at specified intervals. Additionally, an administrator can scheduleautomatic backups to a location off of the server for added resilience.
Similarly, a restore feature enables a BAS to import the backup configuration data to restore to a
previous level.
2.4.5.2 High Availabil ity and Redundancy
The BluStar Application and platform supports a true hot standby redundancy option. Two identicalBAS servers are necessary, together with a serial connection cable. The HA configuration isimplemented at initial configuration and deployment of the system.
The aim of an HA failover server configuration is to ensure the highest possible quality-of-service byproviding redundant systems with redundant services that may be employed whenever the primarysystem becomes unserviceable.
In this version of the BAS a 1:1 redundancy is implemented (if configured). This means that there isone primary server, referred to as the Master Server, as well as a default secondary or backupserver, referred to as the Slave Server. These two servers communicate via a proprietary encryptedheartbeat protocol via the network interface as well as via an optional serial cable connection.
The Sysmon service is responsible for monitoring the health of the platform. In a failoverconfiguration, the Sysmon service also implements the heartbeat protocol and manages the failoverstate machine. Settings to manage this should be made during the initial network configuration. Thisincludes the heartbeat interval, heartbeat multicast group and maximum missed heartbeats. When anetwork error or vital service error is experienced, the Sysmon service will activate the secondary(Slave) server to become active. This means network traffic will be directed to the Slave server nowand this switch over process will be invisible to external devices.

3.1 Aastra BluStar Ecosystem
The BAS solution supports a number of video-enabled devices and clients providing a BluStar
Ecosystem from which users can choose. BluStar takes business communications to a new levelacross a choice of devices, providing consistent user experience by using video as the key mode ofcommunication. BluStar productivity enhancing tools provide more choice and flexibility to answer theincreasingly diverse communication needs of todays modern enterprise. As a BluStar user it ispossible to use video across all BluStar devices and clients connected to the same communicationserver.

Parallel ringing of each logged in device or client enables users tonever miss a call.

4 Licensing
The BluStar Application requires licenses for Users and VPN connections. The license model isstreamlined to make it easy to manage. There are only 3 types of licenses required.

User licenses are either HA or Single Node BAS User licenses. If the BAS configuration is in HAmode, then HA BAS User licenses are required.
User licenses represent the number of users simultaneously logged in; they do not relate to numberof physical BluStar devices or clients installed. A user logged in via a BluStar 8000i would require 1User license as would a person logged in via BluStar for iPad/iPhone or BluStar for PC.
For example, in an environment with:
25 BluStar 8000i devices deployed, powered and connected to the BAS
20 BluStar for PC clients installed on PCs
15 BluStar for iPad/iPhone installed on Apple devices
50 user accounts provisioned on the BAS (not 60 because some users have multiple devices
and clients)
40 BAS User licenses installed on BAS (does not need to correlate to devices or user
accounts provisioned)
The following would occur:
When 20 users log in using their 8000i devices, 20 BAS User licenses are allocated
When 10 PC clients and 10 iPad/iPhone Apps have users log in, the final 20 licenses are
allocated
If a 41stuser attempts to log in using another device or client they will be blocked and a
warning indication given
If users log out of any device or client, they free up a license making it available for another
user to log in via any device or client
Aastra strongly recommends that administrators install User licenses equal to or exceeding thenumber of 8000i and clients installed on devices.
4.1.1 Demo System Licensing
To facilitate demo systems, a BAS does not require any User licenses for the first 5 users. However,this is purely to facilitate demo systems and initial deployment, configuration and testing prior to finalsystem set-up. Deployments requiring 6 or more User licenses will be required to purchase the totalcount of licenses.

4.2 VPN Licenses
BluStar 8000i devices have a built-in VPN client that can connect to a VPN server built into theBluStar application firmware. VPN licensing is per device and covers both client and server licenses.
To facilitate easy management of devices requiring VPN connectivity, the license allocation isimplemented via BAS configuration against configured 8000i MAC addresses. License allocation canthen easily be changed from one device to another simply by changing the VPN configuration (checkbox) on the BAS that is set against any 8000i device MAC.
The quantity of VPN licenses relates to the number of 8000i devices requiring remote access viaVPN. As BAS configuration is defined for each 8000i device, a VPN license allocation is made. Whenattempting to exceed the licensed quantity, a warning message is provided at the time of allocation.VPN license allocation occurs at the time of configuration, not the time of actual use.
Note: VPN licensing is independent of HA or single Node configurations and is perpetual.
