Product Fact FileDerwent offers the world’s largest range of fine art pencils, so to assist you we have created a fact file of our ranges. Each fact file contains a summary of the product features, colour charts, artists drawings and techniques.
We also have lots of expert advice, hints and tips projects, video tutorials and range information at www.pencils.co.uk.
Each of the colour charts shows a light fast rating: an indication of each colours resistance to fading. This is tested using the Blue Wool scale (an internationally recognised standard). A rating between 0-8 is awarded, 8 being the highest rating. Values of 6 or higher are considered to be lightfast.

Superpoint Manual Superpoint Mini
45
Manual Twin hole sharpener• This manual twin sharpener is perfect for use both in the studio and out in the field.
• The sharpener has a large visible reservoir that will not only hold all the shavings securely but makes it easy to see when it is full.
• The lid snaps shut into place and keeps the sharpener secure when out and about.
46
Metal Pencil Sharpener and Pastel Pencil Sharpener• Sometimes people forget that a pencil sharpener or a craft knife is a blade just like a razor or kitchen knife. Pencil sharpeners work very well when new and sharp, but do not last nearly as long as we think. Sharpeners and blades should be changed regularly.
• To use a pencil sharpener, keep the pencil and the sharpener in a straight line. Do not insert the pencil at an angle or the point will be subjected to un necessary pressure and may break.
• Pastels are more delicate than normal pencils. The properties of pastel pencils are specifically designed to be crumbly and dusty on paper. This means that they must be handled with more care during sharpening. (see also sharpening stand)
47
Craft knife• The craft knife is the perfect accessory for pencil sharpening and cutting paper.
• To cut paper, simply press lightly and slide the blade along a straight edge.
• To sharpen a pencil, hold the knife at a shallow angle and take off small amounts of wood from each side of the pencil. Using a sharpening stand will help you steady your pencil whilst using a craft knife.
• To add textural interest to your work, use the craft knife to scrape away colour from the tip of the pencil onto a pre-wetted area.
• A craft knife can be used to scratch away colour.
48
Battery operated eraser• The battery eraser is designed as a drawing tool for refining marks, amending small areas of your work and highlighting.
• When the button on the top of the eraser is held down the spinning action of the eraser lifts colour and graphite from the paper surface.
• The push button is positioned on the top of the eraser making it easy for both left and right handed people to use.
Please note that the colour of the Battery operated eraser has changed from silver to black.
When the eraser is switched on, the spinning action of the eraser lifts the pigment from the paper surface. This makes it ideal for correcting mistakes or re-working small areas.
This eraser is designed as a drawing tool, for refining marks and amending small areas. The eraser is used here to reproduce the engraved flower pattern on the surface of the bowl.
The precise control offered by the eraser makes it suitable for highlighting.
49
Plastic eraser, Kneadable eraser and Pencil eraser and brush• Plastic eraser can be used to remove areas of graphite or unwanted marks, a good everyday eraser.
• Kneadable Eraser is perfect for lifting out tone and colour, it is soft and pliable and comes in wax paper to help keep it fresher for longer.
• Pencil Eraser is perfect for erasing fine detail and creating highlights. Use the brush on the end of the pencil to blend dusty media such as pastel and graphite.
50
Art Eraser, Soft Art Eraser and Eraser-pen
• Art Eraser is an all round general use eraser that works well with all kinds of pencils, excellent for graphite and effective for removing colour.
• Soft Art Eraser is as the name suggests, softer than its sibling. It contains charcoal for gentle and effective erasing, causing less damage to the paper. These erasers come in pack of two or as a mixed pack containing one of each type.
• When you want to get really precise and accurate try the Eraser-pen which comes in a convenient pen shape with a comfort grip. (Replacements are available separately).
51
Waterbrushes• The waterbrushes have been exclusively developed by Derwent with 3 head shapes. The waterbrush acts in the same way as a paintbrush, but the water is housed in the barrel of the brush rather than having to use a separate water pot. The flow of water is easily controlled by squeezing the barrel and has a non drip valve.• Ideal for painting outdoors, these brushes are portable, leak proof and easy to clean.• Fine, Medium and Chisel tip heads are easily distinguished by number.• The innovative Chisel tip gives firm, sharp fines lines or broad strokes when used side on. • Available individually or in a multi mixed pack of 3.
52
Technique Brush SetA specially selected assortment of brushes for different painting techniques; each brush in this set has been developed to produce different marks, allowing the artist greater creative possibilities.
1. Foam Brush - Perfect for laying down a wash over a large area or background.
2. Swordliner - An exquisite brush for flowing marks; glide between fine lines and teardrop shapes. Ideal for petals and leaves.
3. Fan Brush - When wet, the fan separates into fine points which can be used to create delicate marks such as hair and foliage.
4. Flat Brush - For broader strokes and fine lines, the flat brush has great colour carrying capacity for laying down colour quickly with ease.
5. Comb Brush - A close relative of the fan brush, the comb brush is used anywhere you want fine separated lines. Ideal for grasses and fur, it is also used for adding texture and hatching.
6. Rigger Brush - The perfect brush for adding detail. The rigger produces fine lines with a consistent width. Ideal for delicate lines and intricate work.
53
Scale Divider• This ingenious tool makes enlarging and decreasing the size of your subject to scale, a much easier task.
• Simply set the ratio you require, and measure your object with one end of the tool, then flip it over and mark out the new size on your drawing
• Free video demo online.
54
Pencil extenders• Prolong the life of your pencils with these handy extenders. The silver one fits our larger diameter pencils such as Inktense and Artists while the black one fits all our standard size pencils such as Graphic and Watercolour.
55
Paper stumps• The paper stumps make the messy job of blending and smudging dusty media such as charcoal and pastel a whole lot easier and cleaner; it also enables you to get into small areas and smudge with the point. The paper stumps are made from rice paper making them smoother and more effective.
• The sandpaper block is ideal for achieving the exact angle you require on your pencil or block. Rub the tip of your pencil against the sandpaper block and allow the dust to settle on a pre-wetted area to create texture on your drawing, great for sand and pebbles. You can also use the sandpaper block to clean your paper stump.
56
Blender and Burnisher• The Burnisher is a hard colourless pencil which can be used to create a varnish effect over colour pencil drawings. Apply the burnisher then rub with your finger to bring out the polished effect. The Burnisher can also be used for the wax resist technique.
• The Blender pencil can be used in 2 different ways, firstly to blend 2 different colours together, secondly to push a single colour into the grain of the paper. It smoothes the pencil marks so individual strokes and hard edges are softened.
Use a Derwent burnisher pencil to draw your required design, this will add a layer of wax to your surface, then add your colour. The wax layer will resist the colour being applied thus leaving that part of your drawing white.
57
