Full-metal IO-Link sensorsIn harsh operating conditions, full-metal sensors cope with multiple requirements. Their large temperature range and high protection ratingsallow for universal use. Due to the measuring sensor, the distance to thetarget can be permanently monitored. A change in the mechanical distances is immediately detected, allowing for preventive readjustment so as to reduce possible standstill times.The smart sensor profile provides various setting options. Switch points andoutput functions can be configured. Stock-keeping of different sensor typesis no longer necessary as any required setting can be obtained by means ofthe IO-Link interface.

Full-metal sensorsWherever sensors have to cope with harsh operating conditions, full-metalsensors are the right choice. Even temperatures up to 100 °C do not affectreliable end position detection. The high-quality stainless steel housing in combination with the ecolink connector allows for permanent use even when in contact with cleaning agents and humidity. Increased sensing ranges guarantee reliable detection and provide sufficient excess gain.The compact dimensions and the possibility to mount sensors of the same type directly next to each other allow for permanent and reliable endposition detection even in the smallest of spaces.

Visualised switch pointThe new capacitive sensors stand out not only because of their excellenttechnical data but most of all with their new and unique visualisation concept. Using a 12-LED bar display of the PerformanceLine the user canalways adapt the switch point to suit the application conditions – it is always in the centre of the display. The green LEDs either side of the switchpoint indicate the reliability of the switch point. Deposits, material changesetc. are displayed directly on the sensor and the user can readjust theswitch point precisely as needed. An imminent error can be detected ingood time and avoided thus minimising the risk of failures or deactivation.If help is needed with the effects of process changes this is much easier to explain and rectify with the LED display. Over the phone the user candescribe the LED behaviour and a support engineer can easily advise corrective measures.

Flush in the C-slotThe cylinder sensor can be used for the common C-slot such as for SMC. Its height of only 5 mm allows flush mounting. Especially this cylinder manufacturer requires slot-mounting and, often, 2-wire connection.
Long lifeThe sensors function without contact and almost without wear. Their life is much longer than that of the common reed contacts. With the GMR cell (giant magneto resistive), the sensor detects the magnet on the piston through the aluminium wall of the cylinder. Thissaves expensive repair and downtimes.

This makes them particularly suited for the detection of objects far away or for continuous level monitoring, e.g. of bulk materials or liquids. As opposed to photoelectric sensors colour, transparency or theobject’s or medium’s surface shine do not affect sensing.
Adjustable sound beamDue to limited space unwanted reflections at the inside of the tank mayoccur in level applications. Optical fork and angle sensorsThe new devices from ifm are used for part monitoring in feeder systems aswell as in assembly and handling applications. Compared to through-beamsensors, their advantage is that the time-consuming alignment of transmitter and receiver is not necessary.
Settings and diagnostics with IO-LinkA wide range of applications can be solved by using standard optical forkand angle sensors. However, when it comes to the detection of very smallparts or to high speed applications, conventional optical fork and anglesensors rapidly reach their limits. Thanks to IO-Link, individual setting ispossible. Due to adjustable switching frequencies of up to 14,000 Hz, thesensors are suited even for applications with very high speeds. A soiled lensis automatically detected by the sensor so as to allow for cleaning in goodtime in order to guarantee process safety.

Diagnostic functionsThe IO-Link communication interface allows the identification of differentwear conditions. On the one hand, the sensor features seal monitoring indicating a change of the closed position, which can point to deposits orwear of the seal, for example. On the other hand, the different positionscan be counted and the time taken can be measured.

Further technical dataApplicationsEspecially in the field of conveying technology the compact speed sensors can be used for various applications, for example for monitoring belt conveyorsor bucket elevators. Here they are typically used to monitor underspeed, blockage or standstill.
Functions via IO-LinkThe speed sensors incorporate complete speed monitor-ing. The switch point is set using a multi-turn potentio-meter or IO-Link.Additional values are provided via IO-Link, for example the current speed or the set switchpoint. Parameters such as the start-up delay can be setremotely using IO-Link. Besides, the “window mode”can be activated via IO-Link. Two switch points that canbe set independently of each other provide addedvalue. Teaching can also be done remotely via IO-Link.To increase plant transparency, a connection to the ifmSMARTOBSERVER is possible. Of course it is also possible to operate the IO-Link enabled sensor in SIO mode.
Operating principle The integrated inductive sensor is damped by passingcams or other metallic targets. The evaluation unit determines the period duration or the frequency (actualrotational speed value) on the basis of the time intervalbetween damping and compares it to the set switchpoint (preset value). The output is switched during thestart-up delay and when the rotational speed exceedsthe set switching value.An LED signals underspeed and switch-off of the output.

User-friendly handlingAll settings can be made via a modern, resistive touch-screen interface. The display automatically changesfrom display mode to parameter setting mode. Monitoring of limit valuesThe user can define up to four limit values. Up to fourtransistor outputs switch if a set limit is not reached orexceeded. In addition the IO-Link version sends the pre-processed information directly to the PLC.

Analogue signals at a glanceThe compact connector unit DP2200 is simply inserted in the connectioncable of analogue sensors (4...20 mA). It displays the measured values locally. The user can set a switch point or limit at which the transistor output switches. A colour change (red /green) of the display indicates this unmistakably. Critical process states or operational problems are reliably signalled.
Converter for Industry 4.0A special feature is the signal conversion: The threshold display DP2200converts analogue signals to digital IO-Link signals. The DP1213 converter,on the contrary, allows for generation of two analogue 4...20 mA signalsfrom IO-Link data.

Robust designThe monitor series is made of aluminium and impactand weather resistant plastic. They are suitable for usein the cabins of trucks, cranes and fork-lift trucks aswell as in the open cabins of construction machines. Gripper navigationThe 3D sensor detects the object position, even when objects are moving,and transmits it to the robot control, which controls the gripper. The systemcan detect rectangular, round and irregular shapes and transmit not onlythe position of their centre of gravity, but also their number and dimensionsto the controller.Typical objects are boxes, cardboard packages, buckets, kegs, cans, bags,wheels or luggage. Automated gripper systems increase the productivity ofmany applications, as they carry out monotonous manufacturing stepsmore quickly and evenly than a human.In addition, monotonous movements with heavy objects are bad for workers’ health and lead to frequent absences.When robots take over heavy physical work, this increases machine uptimeand releases human workers for tasks for which they are better suited.

ApplicationMany objects, such as aluminium bags, blister packages or curved metalsurfaces with printed, dot-peened or punched codes have difficult reflecting properties. Dome illumination provides a remedy. The integrated LEDs radiate into the dome from below. Due to the diffuse reflection under the dome,the result is an evenly lit surface, comparable to the light conditions on acloudy day.If standard illumination is used, however, direct reflection on the object maylead to halation (hot spot), similar to the reflection of sunlight on a cloudless day. The homogeneous illumination guarantees reliable monitoring or identification results even in case of reflective objects with complicated shapes. The light colour and the four lighting segments can be selected viathe pushbutton module or externally.

Measurement techniqueThe SA volumetric flow sensor operates using the calorimetric measuringprinciple. Measuring elements as well as a heat source are located on themeasuring tip. The physical effect that a flowing medium absorbs heatenergy and conducts it away is used. The resulting temperature change isan indication of flow.
Device functionThe new SA-type sensor has been designed to detect and measure flowand temperature even in large internal pipe diameters up to 400 mm.A serial number on the device enables unambiguous traceability.Therefore it serves different applications. Switching outputs, analogue signals and IO-Link provide various options to further process the signals.That means that the user is best-equipped for Industry 4.0.

The conductive medium flowing through a pipe in a magneticfield generates a voltage which is proportional to the flow velocity or volumetric flow quantity.This voltage is tapped via electrodes and converted in the evaluation electronics. Illuminated pushbutton moduleOn the basis of a new innovative housing, ifm provides two new illuminated pushbutton modules. They feature two pushbuttons and 2 types of LEDoutput. The high protection rating means the modules can be used in thefield, i.e. close to the process. There are no long distances between sensors/actuators and the control cabinet.
Performance in the fieldThe M12 connection technology provides a high degree of installation reliability and flexibility. Both modules are exclusively supplied via AS-i; anadditional 24 V voltage source is not required. The modules are simplymounted on a 35 mm DIN rail or using the supplied mounting adapter.

IO-Link transfers the signals to anyIO-Link master / PLC via one unscreened M12 cable.A special feature of the modules is the pre-processingof the input signals via different filters before passingthem on to IO-Link.The following filters are available: debouncing (suppressnoise signals), stretching (longer signals), inverting.This allows reliable detection of signals with a minimumlength of 1.5 ms.The decentralised positioning of the module reduceswiring costs and makes complex cabling obsolete. Two digital sensors can be connected to each socket setas an input; and an actuator to each output.For communication to the higher-level controller, theDTE10x has an EtherCAT, Profibus, Ethernet TCP/IP,EtherNet/IP or PROFINET interface, depending on thedesign.The robust design with protection rating IP 67 permitsuse in harsh industrial environments.
Application example: RFID for detection of materialduring manufacture and of inflow and outflow in high-bay storage facilitiesThe ifm RFID solution with connection to a Siemens PLCis used as a system. The ifm components DTE 100,ANT600 and the RFID tag E80383 are used. The taskconsists of identifying an article marked with a 14-digitvariable code and an order number.Benefit for the customer: the indication and booking of the material inflow / outflow in real time closes thegap between the material stock in the warehouse andthe stock indicated in the customer's software system.The system knows at all times the location and number of products of all types. No need for complexdocumentation. Lost paperwork is a thing of the past. The transponder is firmly connected to the tank. Long distances are no problem thanks to the 200 mmwriting / reading range of the RFID antenna.

Process-optimised condition monitoringMachines with varying processes such as machine toolshave high demands on condition monitoring systems.To recognise deterioration in quality at an early stageand avoid scrap or even damage, a process-dependentdetection of even the smallest change is necessary. Thiscan only be achieved by interlinking the operating para-meters (e.g. rotational speed, power consumption, feedrate, tool) and the vibration data – ideally in the PLC.This combination of control and condition monitoringdata enables process-dependent monitoring, leading toa considerable increase in quality and process reliability.The same applies to diagnosis (rolling-element bearingcondition, ball screw, unbalance), where, in manycases, a high degree of diagnostic validity can onlyachieved by combining the vibration monitoring datawith the machine/process parameters of the PLC. Influencing process factors must be minimised and the measured data evaluated systematically. Here, too,integrating condition monitoring with the PLC is anenormous advantage and a direct fieldbus connectionprovides the optimal solution.
Rapid response protects machinery If machine protection (e.g. crash monitoring) is part ofthe monitoring concept of a machine, a fast response iscritical to minimise potential damage. Here, reactionspeed is everything. For time-critical alarms, the diagnostic electronics provides two additional digital outputs. The responsetime of the diagnostic electronics from the time theevent occurs until the switching output reacts is 1 ms.This signal can be used to initiate an immediate machinestop to protect man and machine and minimise or evencompletely avoid consequential damage.

• Powerful electronicsThe core of the controller, which has been designedaccording to the applicable standards for electronicsin mobile applications, is one of the most advancedmulti-core 32-bit processors with 300 MHz clock frequency. Its 6 MByte application memory includes a1 MByte file storage system. Two internal, independently programmable controllers allow for subdivision of the application software if required. Consequently, the safe program part can beexecuted without interference from the general program execution. This ensures reliable operationeven with complex control functions. The controllercan be used in applications up to ISO 13849 PL d andIEC 62061 SIL CL 2.
• inputs and outputsThe inputs and outputs can be configured as digital,frequency or analogue inputs with diagnostic function or as inputs for resistance measurement. The analogue inputs enable both current and voltage measurement. The outputs can be configured as digital or PWMoutputs with diagnostic capabilities, with or withoutcurrent control. All inputs and outputs can also be configured as safechannels if required. Thus, safe sensors and actuatorscan be directly connected and processed in the application software.
• Programmable to IEC 61131-3 with CODESYSProgramming is done by means of the standardisedIEC 61131-3 languages. Established and certified libraries are available for special functions and safeapplications.Maintenance, diagnosis and updates are performedusing TFTP via Ethernet and the maintenance tool.Additionally, these functions can be accessed via anapplication interface for ifm’s PDM displays and via asoftware development kit for customer applications.

Another issue is that in the event of afailure of the 24 V DC voltage supply standard mechanical circuit breakersoften do not trigger. This may happen with long cables, for example.The electronic circuit breakers from ifm monitor the circuit ideally and, if required, disconnect reliably. Individual branch circuits can be selectivelydisconnected. This allows a reduction of wire cross-sections in the load circuit of the switched-mode power supplies. On the new adjustable protection modules, the tripping current can be set, allowing for optimumadaptation of the plant's circuits to the machinery. The IO-Link version alsoallows evaluation of important diagnostic data.

Modular installationThe system has a modular structure and consists of asupply module to feed max. 40 A. The protection modules can be mounted side by side. This is done viaa simple clip mechanism, completely without anybridges, jumpers or the like.Easy mounting and minimised wiring complexity savecost and time. With the standard version the user canconnect up to 10 and with the IO-Link version up to 8 safety modules to the head module.
VersionsIn addition to the triggering mechanism, the modulesfeature an LED for signalling if the module has triggered, if it is active and to what extent it is utilised. By means of a pushbutton each channel can be activated, deactivated or set. The feed module has an additional collective output toprovide a warning signal if a module has triggered.
More transparency with IO-LinkThe IO-Link version has the same function; there is, however, additional information about each channel:• effective nominal current (1 byte cyclical)• output voltage (acyclical) • triggering counter (acyclical)• current unit status (1 byte cyclical): – short circuit – overload – undervoltage – limit reached (80 % IN)• activation/deactivation • reset with triggering • reset triggering counterExtended functions DF2101 IO-Link supply module:• min. / max. value generation of the measured current and voltage value for each channel over any period of time• averaging of the measured current and voltage value for each channel over any period of time• permanent switching on of individual channels in order to ignore the cyclic data exchange (e.g. to guarantee the voltage supply of important devices during the initialisation phase). The safety function remains active.The protection modules are available in the fixed sizes 2 A, 4 A, 6 A, 8 A and 10 A and also as adjustable version 1...10 A. The fixed current values prevent subsequent misuse by changing the max. current value.The adjustable modules enable flexible set-up.
