Fields of activity Böning Automationstechnologie GmbH & Co. KG specializes in the development and supply of devices and systems for all kinds of vessels. Our product range includes monitoring and control systems for ships' engines, generators, pumps, valves and bow thrusters. We increasingly supply equipment for use on board yachts, e.g. door monitoring, trim-tab control, search lights, navigation lights and surveillance cameras. Our systems are customized for each type of vessel. They are made up of serial components which are optimally adapted to fit the specific application called for. Modular design techniques enable maximum flexibility. A number of different modules are available for on-board data logging, providing connections to the sensors and processing data according to selected criteria. Monitored values are communicated to the display systems via CAN-bus, depicting the system status either graphically or as numeric values. Control commands can be carried out by means of touch screen technology or separate operating units. Safety relevant equipment is approved by international classification societies.

The company The company was founded in 1977 under the name Ingenieurbüro Böning. In 1996 the legal form was changed to Ingenieurbüro Böning GmbH, and again in 2003 to Böning Automationstechnologie GmbH & Co.KG. From the outset, activities have concentrated on the development and manufacture of devices and equipment for automation on board ships. Over the course of time the production and administrative premises have grown to an area encompassing more than 2,500 m². Employees now include more than 100 specialists and engineers occupied in hardware and software development and engaged in production, sales, procurement and administration. Each year the company supplies monitoring and control systems for more than 1,000 yachts and commercial vessels. The company's quality management is certified according to ISO 9001:2000.

Company Profile

SMT production line

Production Contrary to the current trend towards outsourcing in the field of electronics production, most Böning products are produced on our own premises. This means we have a complete production line at our disposal, enabling flexible response to our customers' wishes and the implementation of modifications and new developments without delay. To ensure consistent high quality, all assemblies are subjected to a check component by component by our own automatic optical inspection equipment. Before being dispatched, all devices are put through this “acid test“.

Development and Quality Assurance Our development department is dedicated to producing hardware and software solutions to tackle the specific technical issues surrounding automation on board. Requirement profiles are worked out in close cooperation with our sales staff and customers. These are then implemented step by step - from the initial idea to commissioning on board. This is where the proximity of development to production and sales truly pays off, enabling a fast and flexible response to possible additional requirements. Quality assurance is already incorporated in the conceptual phase of a new development. Our development engineers have countless facilities at their disposal to make certain the necessary measures are taken already during the planning phase to ensure the future reliability and durability of Böning products. For instance, to ensure the reliable performance of our products under real conditions, all devices are tested in a climate chamber, where they are subjected to extremes of temperature (-40 to +180°C) as well as humidity (15 to 100%). Devices intended for outdoor use are subjected to high dosages of UV light to examine the long-term effects of exposure to strong sunlight. Equipment-specific visualization Application programming

Nowadays, the electro-magnetic compatibility of electronic devices is becoming increasingly critical. Requirements in this respect must already be taken into account during the development phase of an electronic component. Our own in-house EMC laboratory provides the developers with direct feedback and the possibility to respond immediately and conform to the requirements of running projects. This translates into considerably shorter development times. Moreover, these inspections constitute an important prerequisite for subsequent approval on the part of international classification societies (Germanischer Lloyd, Lloyd's Register etc.).
