6 Baculoviruses
What are baculoviruses?Baculoviruses are natural pathogens of insects, mainly lepidopteran species. Baculoviruses consist of one or sev-eral virions, which contain the viral DNA. These virions are encapsulated in a protein occlusion body, which protects the virus from destructive influences in the environment. Granuloviruses are rod - shaped and normally contain a single virion. Nucleopolyhedroviruses are bigger and con-tain mostly several virions.
Baculoviruses are safeBaculoviruses only occur in arthropod species and gener-ally have a narrow host range. Beneficial insects such as bees, bumble bees, predatory mites, and parasitoids are not harmed. Aquatic species, birds, mammals and humans are not affected. Baculoviruses do not produce toxins or secondary compounds.
How do baculoviruses work?Baculoviruses must be ingested by the insect larvae. The protein capsules get dissolved and release the virions, which infect the insects midgut cells. After infecting the midgut cells, other host cells get infected. A few days later, the larvae are killed, and millions of new viruses are released into the environment.

PRODUCT-FACTS
EXILONPestThe larvae of the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon, are a highly polyphagous and very serious pest in many agri-cultural crops worldwide. Moreover, it is an important key pest on golf courses and other highly maintained turf areas throughout the world.
Young larvae feed briefly on foliage of plants before mov-ing into the soil to feed on roots and root collars of host plants. Larvae emerge to feed at the soil surface mostly at night, where they cut off the seedlings or grass plants near ground level, leading to full loss of the plant. Turfgrass may be closely clipped around small burrows, which lar-vae commonly occupy. Older larvae feed on underground plant parts during daytime.
ProductExilon was specifically developed for the use in turf grass areas such as golf courses. Exilon provides turfgrass man-agers and golf course superintendents with an excellent tool for the targeted and efficient control of black cutworm populations, perfectly fitting into IPM strategies and insect resistance management programs. Due to its high selectiv-ity and non-hazardous profile, Exilon is especially suited for black cutworm control in ecologically sensitive areas.

TOPCAT – The vole trap.Damage due to voles
• dead fruit trees / vines
• grassland with mounds, muddy green fodder
• nibbled carrots or wilting lettuce
• tulip bulbs that suddenly disappear
Voles have a tremendous reproductive potential!Under favourable environmental conditions (food supply, climate, competition) voles can build up a colony within a short period of time. The amazing population dynamics of voles leads to enormous economic damage in agriculture.
topcat – The vole trap.To prevent vole damage, early active measures should be taken. Aside from preventive measures such as enhance-ment of natural predators, voles can also be controlled with traps. The internationally patented topcat-trap is a very efficient high-quality trap for catching voles from both tunnel directions.
✔ High quality product made of stainless steel (rust-free)
✔ Quick and easy handling
✔ Catches voles from both tunnel directions
✔ Very sensitive release mechanism
✔ Voles die quickly
✔ Comfortable operating position, hygienic mode of operation

ADVANTAGES OF THE TOPCAT-TRAP
25
STANDBY – The vole fence.Standby is a reliable and proven system consisting of a fence and live-catch traps to prevent the (re-)immigration of voles into a certain area. Once vole-free, the area will stay vole-free thanks to the vole fence! Natural predators (foxes, cats, birds of prey, badgers, stoats etc.) benefit from the vole fence and regularly roam the area along the fence in order to systematically check the standby-boxes.
Above ground, the moving vole attracts many predators. Exposed to these dangers, the vole hides in the standby-boxes for protection, where it is trapped. Predators such as foxes, cats, badgers and stoats open the box by lifting the flip top and snatch the bait. The flip top will close and the trap is ready for the next vole to be trapped. The standby-box is patented internationally.
✔ Easy, effective and robust system to prevent (re-)immigration of voles into a valuable area.
✔ Once installed, the fence is self-governed.
✔ “Participatory system”: Natural predators (e. g. foxes, cats, stoats, etc.) empty the live-catch traps by lifting the flip-top of the traps.
✔ Easy maintenance.

ADVANTAGES OF THE TOPSNAP-TRAP
27Bio-Fungicides
AMYPROTEC 42Protects your root systemAmyProtec 42 is a biological soil fungicide, containing the rhizosphere (rooting zone of plants) colonising bacteria Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB 42. In the root zone the bacteria compete for space and nutrients with soil borne pathogens, such as Rhizoctonia and Erwinia and create a “disease-inhibiting protective shield”. AmyProtec 42 activates the plant’s natural defence mechanisms through induced resistance. Enhanced root growth, allows the plant to faster escape the susceptible state before plant emer-gence. This is an important mechanism to inhibit damping off and stem infections caused by soil borne pathogens. This combination of effects helps the plant to build stronger and healthier roots and to improve its tolerance towards biotic (pathogens) and abiotic (water deficiency, salinity) stress.
A perfect tool for integrated programs AmyProtec 42 can be applied with almost all agrochemicals and by a wide range of application methods. Start treat-ments in early plant development and use AmyProtec 42 as an efficient part of integrated plant protection pro-grams, avoiding resistances and reducing the use of con-ventional fungicides.

The Trichoderma fungus colonizes any plant wound or senescing plant tissue, and prevents pathogens such as Botrytis and Eutypa from penetrat-ing the plant. Thus, Eco-77 is effective against Botrytis on leaves, flowers and fruits. In the same way pruning wounds on grapevines and other fruit trees are protected against the entrance of pathogens. Grapevine trials, have shown that the protecting fungus may still be active one year after.
Eco-77 is mixed directly with water and applied either as a full cover spray as a directed spray onto pruned surfaces, or via pruning shears with a dripper attachment. Eco-77 is not compatible with several broad spectrum fungicides.
Advantages
• Efficient Botrytis protection in greenhouses (leaves, flowers and fruit)
• Fewer plant losses resulting from wood rot pathogens
• Vineyard’s productive life is extended as a result of disease prevention (e. g. Eutypa).

34 Entomopathogenic nematodes
Entomopathogenic nematodesEntomopathogenic nematodes naturally occur in the environment as parasites of many insect larvae. The mass release of these nematodes provides an efficient and cura-tive control of key insect pests in a wide range of crops.Once released, nematodes actively seek out their insect hosts. When a host has been located, the nematodes pen-etrate into the insect through body openings and release symbiotic bacteria that multiply and rapidly kill the insect. Subsequently, nematodes feed upon the host and mature into adults, which mate and produce the next genera-tion. The life cycle is completed within a few weeks and hundreds of thousands of nematodes emerge in search of new hosts.
Entomopathogenic nematodes are a natural product and safe to users, consumers and the environment.
Andermatt Biocontrol has more than 20 years of experience related to the production of entomopathogenic nematodes. At present we supply three different nematode species (please see next page).
AQUANEMIX 2%Application device for nematodesOur nematodes are formulated in a vermiculite or clay powder that needs to be mixed well in water prior to use.An easy way to apply nematodes is to use Aqua Nemix 2%.
