BOA VENTINOX Metal hose/ Chimney liner
BOA VENTINOX Chimney liner for low temperature heating installations, perfectly tight, welded The VENTINOX-HR hose is a highly corrosion resistant, flexible chimney liner, perfectly appropriate for heating installations running under low temperature conditions. The VENTINOX-HR liner has the right characteristics for applications working at temperatures below the acid dew point. With a global index of 41* the material used is a high-alloy steel (frequently used stainless steels have a global index of less than 30). Thus the VENTINOX-HR is extremely resistant Material: corrugated hose stainless steel F29-M, AL 29-4C Wall thickness: 0,2 mm
against different types of corrosion, particularly against pitting cor-rosion, the most common corrosion type present in low temperature heating installations. A higher percentage of chrome and molybde-num is responsible for such excellent physical performance. It may be used at higher temperatures up to 450°C. *The global index is an empirical value which states that the risk of pitting corrosion diminishes when its value is >30. Global index (%Cr x 3,3 x %Mo + 30 x %N2).

BOA DE Strip wound metal hose/ Protective hose
BOA DE Strip wound metal hose Using metal hoses, electric cables, rubber and plastic hoses, cop-per pipes and other sensitive conductors become well protected against mechanical damages, welding splatters or chemical influ-ences. While protecting rubber and plastic hoses, moreover they prevent them from stretching and bursting due to inner pressure or from buckling due to too sharp bending.
The protective metal hose Type DE is formed by a strip wound, S-profile metal strip; circular cross-section.
Type DE shows an excellent, robust construction, resistant against heavy mechanical movement. Excellent flexibility not hindering or only slightly the space within the conductor to be protected is mov-ing. Type DE is not tight, and therefore unsuited for pressure piping use.

BOA Protex Strip wound metal hose/ Protective hose
Application fields: - as exhaust gas, ventilation and suction hose - for vibration and sound absorption in exhaust manifolds - applicable for small underpressure, if a slight loss of air is
tolerated - as inliner for pressure hoses operating very high flow rates, to
prevent important pressure loss and too high sound emission.
Temperature range: - 196°C up to max. 650°C
Protex Strip wound metal hose The protective hose PROTEX is a strip wound metal hose with double-strip profile, polygonal section, without gasket, limited tight-ness, therefore not recommended for conveying liquids and gases. Suitable for all-around movements, also in axial direction. Tolerates small torsion due to polygonal profile. Robust execution and resis-tant to vibration. Easy assembly. Material: stainless steel. 1.4301 (similar to AISI 304)
Length measure The hose or hose assembly length shall be measured in either mid-position or in the extended position depending on the purchaser's requirements and shall be the length as ordered with a tolerance of ±3% unless otherwise stated (definition EN ISO 15465). The com-pressed measure length is 10–15% shorter, the installation length corresponds to the mid-position between extended and compressed position. Installation To allow free movement in all directions, the installation length corresponds to the middle value between stretched and com-pressed measure. To connect fittings, an appropriate thin-walled tube is pulled over the hose end, then riveted to the hose profile, and brazed or welded.

BOA OMIKRON Special execution for refrigerating compressors Solid, helically corrugated and braided metal hoses made of stainless steel are highly recommended to compensate for vibra-tions caused by engines, compressors, pumps etc.. The flexible hose absorbs the vibrations. Thanks to the strong wall geometry, the operating reliability is very high. The occurring reaction forces are taken up by the braid, thus discharging both the source of vibrations and the fix points. Materials: Corrugated hose stainless steel 1.4571 Braid stainless steel 1.4301 Brazed end copper/ stainless steel
Application field: The vibration absorber type OMIKRON is appropriate for the instal-lation in refrigerating systems. It is fitted into copper pipings and consists of a robust metal hose and braid made of stainless steel assembled with brazed copper ends. The standard overall lengths meet compressor construction standards regarding usual vibration conditions such as frequencies and amplitudes.

Fittings to BOA Metal hosesThe advantage of metal hoses lies in the fact that most of the standard fittings can be soldered or welded onto the hose, becoming an abso-lutely tight, pressure and heat resistant, fully metallic connection. Dimensions and technical data of the various hose types may be taken from the respective technical data sheet.
To protect the first corrugation directly adjacent to the connection from overheating, an end ring is placed. Hose end and braid are comprised by that ring and join tightly the connection. Metal hose assemblies are executed with a tolerance of –1% / + 3% of the nominal length NL (according to ISO 10380).

BOA Metal hoses/ Metal hose assemblies
BOA Technical Information Metal hoses and Metal hose assemblies
EXECUTION: Materials of corrugated hoses High quality chrome-nickel steel 1.4541 (equivalent to AISI 321) 1.4571 (equivalent to AISI 316 Ti) 1.4404 (equivalent to AISI 316 L) Special materials on demand Braid Provided with a steel wire braid, the pressure resistance can be increased by different degrees (type A, B or C). A mechanical joint is realized between the two end fittings, blocking the uncontrolled elongation of the metal hose assembly under pressure forces. These braids are made of high quality chrome-nickel steel 1.4301 (equivalent to AISI 304). As a mechanical protection in heavy duty conditions, the metal hose assembly may be additionally equipped with a wire spiral and/or a protecting hose. Provided at both ends with spirals against buckling, the bend stress may be further reduced. Length tolerances The tolerance of the overall length of a metal hose assembly ranges between –1% and +3%. Insulation On demand NOTIONS/ DEFINITIONS: Metal hose Bulk product without fittings, raw material (half-finished product) for assembly. Assembly Equipment of metal hoses with fittings by soldering, brazing or pressing and any preparatory operations and finishing. Metal hose assembly Completely assembled metal hose, with or without braid, equipped with fittings and tested. Nominal pressure PN Permissible design pressure at ambient temperature = 20°C without dynamic strain.
Temperature reduction factor kt Reduction factors for materials and/or temperatures according to ISO standard 10380. If the corrugated hose and the braid are not made of the same material, the lowest value must be taken.

Bend radius Radius measured at the longitudinal axis of the metal hose. The ISO standard distinguishes between static bend radius – for single movement (bend test) – and dynamic bend radius – for frequent movement cycles and/or pressure impulses (fatigue test). Falling below the minimum bend radius shortens the life time of the metal hose assembly. Life time The term life time defines the number of cycles realized until shows a leakage occurs, the hose changes considerably its external aspect, or a reduction of >50% of the intended bend radius occurs. Pressure loss Due to the corrugated profile, metal hose assemblies have a higher flow resistance than smooth pipework. Nominal size, medium and flow rate play an important part. At short hose assemblies that pressure loss may be ignored, at longer units however it should be taken into consideration.
Design and type approval according to ISO standard 10380 Burst pressure test Test with water at ambient temperature. A straight hose sample with a length of 10 times the nominal size – but not shorter than 500 mm, shall be tested hydraulically until a leakage occurs. The so established burst pressure must not be less than 4 times the permissible nominal pres-sure PN mentioned in the table. Bend test Pressure-less test according to the drawing in the margin. The hose sample is to be bend around a template having a diameter defined by the static bend radius. The test consists in 10 cycles (back and forth). Movement frequency: 5 - 25 cycles per minute. Fatigue test (U-bend) Test with water at ambient temperature. Test pressure according to table (nominal pressure PN). Movement cycle according to the drawing in the margin. The distance between the axis is 2 times the dynamic bend radius according to table. Movement s: 8 times nominal size DN or at least 250 mm. Movement frequency: 5 - 30 cycles per minute. Very often, simple measures such as the installa-tion of a rigid elbow in the adjacent pipe system
can massively reduce the residual stress during installation.
The optimal nominal length of the metal hose assembly avoids overbending or buckling, even if dynamic loads occur. If the recommended bend
radii are not underrun, it becomes relatively easy to define a minimal life time.
In case of extraordinary stresses such as impor-tant movements, pressure variations etc., they have to be (mathematically) taken into considera-
tion. The more precisely a problem is defined, the more easy becomes a mathematically reasonable design.
To avoid torsion, at least one end of the metal hose assembly should be movable (e.g. equipped with a loose flange or a screw connection). In addition, sufficient bolt surface is necessary for proper screwing, to avoid torsion transfer to the
metal hose. Moreover, in dynamic applications, hose axis and movement should be in the same plane. Then no torsion will occur.

Stressless installation
It is very difficult to calculate exactly the life time or the possible behaviour of metal hose assem-blies. Their geometries and influencing variables are to complex and imprecise to allow a mathe-matically exact analysis. The life time depends mainly on the operating conditions and in conse-quence on an ideal installation position and a per-
fect installation mode. In most of the cases where the connection with metal hose assem-blies is not satisfactory, they are not optimally positioned or the installation is incorrect. The following four measures have a decisively posi-tive influence on the life time of metal hose as-semblies:

Rules for the calculation of hose lengths
Straight metal hose assembly for parallel displacement, static (Displacement perpendicular to the axis is not allowed)
cos must not be 0.5, otherwise the radius R > Rstatic must be taken.
Bend radii As a technical characteristic, each type of metal hose has two nominal bend radii: the static bend radius Rstatic (for fixed applications) and the dy-namic bend radius Rdynamic (for movable applica-tions). Depending on the application, they must not be underrun (or only after having consulted our Product Engineering Division!
The basis for the determination of the bend radii is EN ISO Standard 10380 for corrugated metal hoses and metal hose assemblies. This standard is also the basis for our type approvals. For all dynamic tasks, also for thermal dilatations, always put the dynamic bend radius into the equation to calculate the nominal length of the metal hose assembly.
Application fields and ways of installation
The application fields and ways of installation for metal hose assemblies are almost unlimited. If our customers are confronted with particularly difficult installation conditions, we seriously advice to
hand in a sketch or drawing together with the inquiry. Thanks to our immense experience in that special field, we are able to find a solution even for very difficult tasks.
Length of the rigid connection zone I
l = EH + A
Into the equations appears the dimension I (mm). It defines the rigid connection zone at the end of the hose. l is calculated adding the length of the end ring EH and the length of the fitting A.
Length of the end ring EH
The end ring protects the welding zone from overstress. To calculate the nominal length, EH (mm) can be taken from the table below.
Length of the fitting A The protruding length of the fitting A (mm) can be taken from the fitting tables.

correct: Using a rigid pipe elbow, the hose falls straight-line down. Correct installation only with rigid pipe elbow. Correct installation only with rigid pipe elbow. If big lateral movements are to be expected, install in a 90° bend. Install rigid pipe elbows to avoid variable movements and too big bending load. Use a movable coil to keep good position and in order to avoid variable movement and torsion. Using a saddle or a coil, buckling and consequently falling below the bend radius are avoided. Unroll the hose in a straight line. No torsion and favourable bend-ing load thanks to the installation of rigid pipe elbows. If torsion can not be avoided, use movable couplings which absorb torsion. Thus the hose is only exposed to bending load. No torsion stress if using a double rigid pipe elbow.
The figures opposite illustrate some examples of incorrect metal hose assembly installations, unfortunately often found in practice, and how to correct them easily.
