PRODUCT LINES

Radio Activity S.r.l. is a young and dynamic electronic engineering company with its operational headquarters in Milan.

The company carries out design and production of wired and wireless equipment and systems for telecommunications

networks in the professional market.

The main products developed by Radio Activity are: professional radio equipments in VHF and UHF bands for voice

and data communication, IP modem and digital audio matrix systems for telephone 2/4 wire (+E/M) standard lines.

All Radio Activity products are designed to interfacing with a detailed and robust remote control system.

Base station

Radio Activity develops rugged and powerful base stations based on DSP technology for professional radio network

applications.

The main characteristics of its products are:

∞∞∞∞ modularity: equipments are based on modules, each implementing a defined function, wich can be

connected together in different way in order to realize different systems, from a single receiver/transmitter

to a multicarrier base station;

∞∞∞∞ flexibility: the most part of computational functions, signal

elaborations, control loop and logic is assigned to software

routines. In this way the DSP can manage every equipment

features and by simply changing software parameters it is

possible to customize the system;

∞∞∞∞ connectivity: the base stations have got an Ethernet port to connect each other with different type of links.

These links can operate with different transportation system topology, like the most popular TCP/IP link

(microwave, fibre optics, LAN, WAN, …) or T1/E1 link or a pair of (UHF/VHF narrowband) base stations or

4wires+E&M.

∞∞∞∞ remote control: every equipment gives access to the internal control serial bus. A proprietary software allows

by a remote connection to download software, change current parameters, monitor the working status;

∞∞∞∞ digital core: modulation, demodulation and audio frequency processing are fully digital;

∞∞∞∞ self-calibration: each application variable or component tolerance dependent parameter is calculated by DSP

algorithms on the basis of self-calibration processes. Calibration also allows to compensate variations due to

components aging. For simulcast network, the DSP performs a very accurate synchronism reference and the

appropriate delay and amplitude compensation of the signals.

∞∞∞∞ rugged: more than 1.300 Radio Activity base stations are operating for emergency and essential services in

Italy and outside presently. It presents less than 1% of global failure per year.

IP leased line modem

The Radio Activity IP modems allowing you to connect together two LAN networks by using a 4-wire audio (leased

line) connection with net speed up to 24 Kbps with 12.5 KHz channel

bandwidth.

Thanks to the LINUX "core" with a DSP coprocessor, the modem

provides excellent performance even over noisy and distorted channels.

The modem is approved for use in “over the mains” communication

network at speeds up to 33.6 Kbps.

This solution is especially suited to management and supplying

electricity companies. With integrated Ethernet interface, enables to minimize the number of units to be installed and

allowing to simplifying operations of system activation and maintenance.

This modem should be used to perform a TCP/IP link over a twisted copper pair to realise the connection between two

DMR base stations.

Digital audio matrix

Radio Activity has developed a Digital Audio Matrix that can manage up to 60 lines 2/4W + E&M for line/radio or

telephone/radio connections.

The device works connected with a host PC for configurations setting. There are many coding/decoding protocols to

achieve audio management, address, PABX interface to radio, networks interconnection systems.

The matrices are designed using the latest technologies and applications in the field of Digital Signal Processing (DSP).

These devices are fully programmable and easily configurable both hardware and software, thus providing excellent

solutions for all needs of radio communications in order to realize Operative Centres that manage complex networks

of tens of base stations.

All DSP modules have a connection bus that allows flexible composition of the various blocks of the system to create

"infinite solutions."

MODULAR APPROACH

The base station family RA-XXX has been designed using the latest technologies in the Radio Frequencies and Digital

Signal Processing fields. The transceivers are

“fully digital ” developed following the theory of

“soft radio” in which the modulation and

demodulation processes are performed by

algorithms of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) .

The radio modularity, as well as the other

functions like remote control, self test, self

calibration, over temperature protection, etc,

minimizes the management and maintenance

costs of the equipment.

The receiver section has excellent linearity

characteristics, which allow that more radio

stations work on the same frequency band.

These devices are fully programmable and easy

to configure both in Hw and SW, consequently this will provide optimum solutions for any radio communication

exigencies from a single fixed station to complex networks with tens of

base stations.

All DSP module have a LAN

connection bus that easy

permits very flexible

composition of system

building blocks to realise

virtual infinite solutions.

The base station

incorporates a lot of

software defined function

target to analog

(conventional) and to

digital applications. The

transceivers of RA-XXX

family can support a wide set of options for analogical line interfaces

(2/4wires+E&M, telephone interfaces, echo canceller, tone decoder, …),

digital audio matrix, signalling encoder/decoder (CCIR, ZVEI, DTMF, … ),

fast modem for data transmission, double receivers for “soft antenna diversity”, voting system, multi-mode

synchronism recovering and automatic phase and amplitude line equalization for simulcast application, etc.

The transceiver performs also many digital modulations like GSMK and 4FSK with the related network protocols

(Digital Mobile Radio, Automatic Identification System, …).

Using a PC, via optional SW, it is possible to set-up most of the parameters (fine frequency adjust, corner frequency of

digital filters, RF deviation, audio level in/out, PTT pilot tone, …). This SW permits also a large view of the status of the

transceiver (audio loop test TX=>RX, current consumption, temperature, …) and a set of measurements (audio level,

frequency, distortion, delay, received field, RF power, …).

The radio electric functions of the device comply with the requests foreseen by the legislations ETS 300-086 e ETS 300-

113.

The transceiver RA-XXX has a compact structure, is made up by single modular units inside metallic shielded modules

so called EUROCARD with 220 mm format, assembled in SUBRACK 19”. The dimensions of the subrack are : 3HEx84TE,

widht 280 mm.

The function units are implemented as plug-in modules which are interconnected on the back plane located at the

rear of the unit. It consists in some PCB (depend of use) provided with signal and supply connectors.

The shielding system is very efficient and allows a quick access to the PCB, removing the slipping cover without

screws.

The standard power supply of the device is by battery at 13,5Vcc, 5A negative grounding. In case of functioning with

other energy fonts are available more types of isolated DC/DC or AC/DC converters with battery charger.

TRANSCEIVERS

The following models are available (with 12.5KHz and/or 25KHz channelization each one):

∞∞∞∞ Mod. RA-080 VHF 68-88 MHz

∞∞∞∞ Mod. RA-160 VHF 146-174 MHz

∞∞∞∞ Mod. RA-450 UHF 410-440 MHz / 430-470MHz

∞∞∞∞ Mod. RA-900 UHF 865-925 MHz

The basic transceiver is made up by:

∞∞∞∞ Power supply unit [PSU]

∞∞∞∞ Digital Signal Processing module [DSP]

∞∞∞∞ Single or double (main+diversity) receiver [RX]

∞∞∞∞ Power Amplifier RF up to 25 W [TX 25W]

∞∞∞∞ Set-up and local operator [P.O.L.] (optional)

∞∞∞∞ Internal duplexer (optional)

The transceivers are available in two main versions, the conventional (analog) and the dual mode analog/digital. The

two base stations are very similar: they differ by the power of the DSP, by the interfaces possibilities and for the

“look” silver/blue.

Branching

The basic configuration can be extended with other receivers, digital audio matrix interfaces towards 2/4 wires

standard telephone lines, 1+1 configuration, multichannel transceiver, etc., by simply combining the following

modules:

Power Supply Manager: can be not isolated for a 12V battery supply, or

isolated for a wide range input voltage supply (9-18Vdc / 18-36Vdc / 36-

72Vdc or, with an external auxiliar module, 90-240Vac);

Digital Signal Processor: the manager of the

equipment (for complex transceivers architectures

more DSP modules can work together);

Page 7 of 16 Ver 1v3

Receiver: can be supplied in single or double version with two

channels synchronous in order to obtain a reception known as

“soft antenna diversity”. The signals received by two antennas

are put in phase and then summed up in real time before the

demodulation in order to “line up” the antennas in the direction

which grant the best quality signal. This technology allows to

improve the fading functions and is useful for the analogical

signals and moreover for the data traffic. Demodulation

parameters are software programmable;

Transmitter: contains both a very low noise RF sinthesizer and a class C

25W RF power amplifier. Modulation and power parameters are

software programmable;

Local Operator: manages the user interface and contains 2 audio interfaces

towards 2/4 wires +E/M lines and 4 optoisolated software selectable

criteria (2 input + 2 output);

branching system: can be configured in different way to allow following

working modes: duplex, half duplex, simplex, 1+1 configuration,

multireceiver;

And other modules …

∞∞∞∞ GPS receiver: PPS signal allows the DSP to synchronize and to equalize the transceiver to the absolute time

reference in simulcast systems.

∞∞∞∞ GSM/GPRS modem for remote control purpose

∞∞∞∞ These transceivers are suitable both for analog and digital communications.

Digital (DMR)

The same modular units, with more DSP power and an ETHERNET interface, are used to build the digital release of the

transceiver. The external design was changed a little (colours) to present a more pleasant view.

This transceiver is a software up-grading of the previous analog one. All the basic analog functions (TCSS, audio,

selective call, …) remain active and the new DMR standard (ETSI TS 102 361 technical specification) modem are

plugged over.

Radio Activity DMR repeaters are designed with the double standard technology, they are able to work both in

analogical and digital way, then supporting both classic PMR terminals and the new DMR ones, with every operating

characteristic of each technology (“dual mode”):

∞∞∞∞ voice communications with FM analogical modulation and selective calling based on traditional protocols;

∞∞∞∞ voice communications and data transmission with 4FSK digital modulation, according to the DMR standard,

with 9600 bps gross total speed.

Furthermore the selection of required working mode is fully automatic, this meaning that the repeater is able to

autonomously detect if the incoming communication is analogical or digital and can consequently configure itself to

work as a PMR or DMR respectively.

Basic model already has all the characteristics to work as a double standard repeater with all the features of analogical

and digital service. It can be equipped with double receiver to counteract fading effects through diversity space

reception. It is set to host communication and synchronization embedded devices to make the network expandable to

a multi-frequency or iso-frequency multi-site system, with different type of links, operating with different

transportation system topology, like microwave, UHF, fiber optics, generic TCP/IP connections.

Privileged communication interface is ethernet standard type, maximally compatible with more diffused technology.

This interface supports not only voice and data digital traffic, but also remote control management, which for Radio

Activity equipment is very powerful: it is possible to have a complete monitor system of equipment status, it is

possible to modify each parameter, to down-load each SW and configuration, launch self-test and calibration

functions, to perform specific tests through internal embedded function generators and software analyzers of the

station. For analogical voice traffic instead, a 2/4 wire and criteria line interface is available.

Remote control service can be performed through an ethernet connection pre-existing in the site, or through GPRS

modem which can be integrated into the station, or through the radio channel and another Radio Activity station.

Fully modular structure allows to best configure the radio equipment, by adding and/or changing the required HW and

SW functional blocks, to work as simple repeater, multi-frequency multi-site repeater, iso-frequency multi-site

repeater.

Applications

Radio Activity DMR repeater is designed to be modular from both HW and SW point of view, to maximize its flexibility

and minimize costs, physical dimensions, consumptions.

Common applications of these transceiver’s family are the following:

∞∞∞∞ duplex/simplex/half-duplex radio networks simulcast or multi-frequencies

∞∞∞∞ automatic dual mode analog/digital (DMR) standard

∞∞∞∞ simulcast/multi frequency networks with a lot of “built in” link interfaces like microwave, UHF, fibre optics,

generic TCP/IP connections;

∞∞∞∞ point to point and point to multipoint radio systems;

∞∞∞∞ PSTN line bridge (standard telephone, analog PC modem and fax compatible);

∞∞∞∞ radio modem (4.8Kbaud and 9.6Kbaud);

∞∞∞∞ fast IP radio modem (up to 26.4 kb/s) in conjunction with the RA-MD-1 IP modem

This is an example of typical (simulcast/multicast) dual mode analog/digital radio network made with the Radio

Activity base stations over a TCP/IP backbone network:

LEASED LINES MODEM WITH IP SERVICES

RA-MD1 is a Communication Controller composed of an embedded audio modem and a high performances RISC

processor, equipped with LINUX operating system, which manages the whole device and handles the HW/SW

communication interfaces needed for serial and LAN (Ethernet) data ports.

The typical application is the TCP/IP network extension toward remote networks or single network devices operating

process control (electrical production, surging sites…).

The embedded audio modem is designed to work on a standard 4 wire interface on a leased line, using the V.34

standard; it is optimized to transport the data flow over analog radio links, on which it assures great performances.

For this option we recommend to use TRXs of the RA-450D family, which have excellent radio electric characteristics,

adapted to realize high-speed data point-to-point links.

On this subject, should be noted that the RA-450D TRXs process the signal through Digital Signal Processing (DSP)

devices, permitting lots of functions not performed by the traditional analog TRXs. In particular, the link established by

these TRXs, even with a 12.5KHz channeling, guarantees a 300-3400 Hz bandwidth with very low levels for group delay

and distortion, and a high S/N level.

Available on the RA-MD1 are:

∞∞∞∞ an asynchronous serial V.24 port (DTE) destined to the remote control system, permitting the monitoring and

the surveillance of both the “local” and the “remote” device

∞∞∞∞ an asynchronous serial V.24 port (DTE) for the data communication

∞∞∞∞ a 10/100 BT LAN Ethernet port for the data communication

The RA-MD1 handles the communications between the serial ports, the LAN port and the embedded modem. It has its

own configurable IP Address, and carries the data on a 4 wire leased line using a full-duplex PPP protocol.

Page 11: Products overview 1v3 - Radioactivity overview.pdf · Products overview updated: 15/07/2009 Page 3 of 16 Ver 1v3 PRODUCT LINES Radio Activity S.r.l. is a young and dynamic electronic

Page 11 of 16 Ver 1v3

The RA-MD1 can transfer data on a point-to-point radio link, realized with a couple of RA-450D TRXs, at a speed up to

26.4Kbps, assuring a 19.2Kbps net bandwidth and using the extra band for diagnostic signalling, error correction and

network services.

Using a RISC processor with an embedded LINUX operating system assures a great flexibility for configuration and use,

permitting either homogenous LAN-to-LAN or V.24-to-V.24 and mixed LAN-to-V.24 connections.

DIGITAL AUDIO MATRIX

The Digital Matrix is target to Control Offices applications. The main rule of the Digital Matrix is to inter-connect

repeaters or radio networks each other or to telephone lines/console.

Digital audio matrix is a modular structure equipment designed to dynamically cross-connect up to 24 analog lines.

Lines interface type is standard 2/4 wires + E/M with 4KHz bandwidth and the rules of cross-connection are software

programmable and writable in an internal flash memory.

Audio matrix is made up by 2 types of modules:

∞∞∞∞ Power supply unit [PSU]

∞∞∞∞ Audio lines with DSP [4W+E+M]

These modules are mounted in a standard 3UT 19” rack.

∞∞∞∞ with 4 independent analog line interfaces. Each line can be set as a 2 wires (PSTN) one or 4 wires one;

optoisolated E/M criteria can be enabled. For specific applications lines 1 and 3 can be closed respectively

upon lines 2 and 4 (both manually or automatically in case of system fault);

∞∞∞∞ 4 bidirectional ADC/DAC;

∞∞∞∞ a DSP core which performs signal conversion, filtering, elaboration and shares on a digital LAN with

proprietary protocol, both digitized signals and their associated criteria. Each DSP of each module connected

to the same LAN can “see” every digital audio flux and its related criteria. Each DSP elaboration parameter is

software programmable.

Up to 6 Audio lines with DSP modules can be connected in the same rack.

Rules for crossconnection can be

∞∞∞∞ static: line output signal is a fixed weighted sum of some line input signals;

∞∞∞∞ dynamic: line output signal depends on information contained in some input signals like “E” value, frequency

selectable superaudio tones or a sequence/combination of them, DTMF sequence;

∞∞∞∞ a combination of the two.

Digital Audio LAN is fully compatible with transceiver’s one, so the two equipment can be connected together by this

bus in order to connect one or more transceivers to telephone lines. This connection allows to exchange not only

audio flux, but also digital flux and criteria (allowing remote control of the device).

REMOTE CONTROL

The base station has a first useful level of remote control: it sends automatically alarm messages to the mobile

terminals directly. Every base station sends to the selected “maintenance group” of terminals a short message to

inform in real time the user about the major failure happened (power supply low, IP connection fail, synchronism fail,

etc.). In most cases this feature is enough to survey the correct functioning of the network by the final users.

Target for system integrators and surveillance/maintenance operators, Radio Activity had developed a powerful tools

for Network Management and remote surveillance and control based on Windows (XP/VISTA). A lot of functions are

implemented: software download, RX/TX disable, alarms report, audio level control, radio measurements, RF power,

telephone to radio setup, and much more …

All the parameters setup are remotely modifiable by the user through the remote control SW package.

There are many possibilities of connection to the station: TCP/IP, serial port, “over the air”, modem. The most used

one is via GSM modem directly connected to the stations:

With this connection it is possible to set all parameters

of the radios and it is possible to download all firmware

and software installed on the radio. All the commands

sending and received from the stations don’t disturb

the radio communications (also during the down-load

procedure).

The use of GSM modem allow the Technical Assistance

Unit to access to the station directly from Control

Center or from a mobile PC without disturb on the

radio communications.

The network manager presents a global view of the

network state:

For more detailed view, it is sufficient to “click” on the base station button and will appear:

With the “connect” button the user access to all the set-up and control windows:

After connection the base station is accessible for the parameter setup or for the diagnostic measurements. Every

setup menu is very detailed to build really “infinite solutions”. In the following there is some examples of setup

windows.

DMR setup menu

This is the main DMR control mask to manage DMR mode of base station. The mask contains both a configuration box

and a monitor box.

The programmable parameters are the following:

∞ enable of 4FSK modulator/demodulator (DMR mode),

∞ enable of reception as a terminal or as a base station,

∞ enable of transmission as a terminal or as a base station,

∞ enable of repeater mode,

∞ normal and emergency color code both for TX and RX,

∞ timeout counter for valid timeslot,

∞ network delay,

∞ TX hold time after voice communication,

∞ TX hold time after last valid data timeslot or after hang time expiration,

∞ Delay compensation, to compensate for different path delays in simulcast network.

The monitor box gives information about:

∞ current timing, UTC minute and second, network offset seconds, timeslots and ticks,

∞ DMR mode enable,

∞ busy timeslots both in TX and RX,

∞ number of current second/timeslot analyzed

∞ number of last received timeslot (even and odd)

∞ frequency offset

∞ time offset

∞ error vector

“Save in EEP” button allows to save the entire configuration set (except from channel table, calibration tuning results

and synchronization tuning parameters) into flash memory.

Network setup menu

If the equipment will work into a Radio Network, the following mask allows to configure network parameters.

The “enable radio network” must

be checked and the type of

network, multisite (multi-

frequency) or simulcast, must be

selected. Then the role of the

equipment, master, slave, or sub-

master must be selected. In case

of slave, the address identifier of

the relative master and its voting

delay must be inserted. If present,

also sub-master address identifier

must be specified. “IP parameters”

box contains the definition of

ethernet LAN ports configuration

and the number of multicast group

to which the equipment belong.

In case of multicast, the timeslots

synchronization tolerance can be

defined.

Radio control menu

“Radio control” mask shows the current status of the transceiver, giving the main measures and indications about

received and transmitted signal, power supply, synchronism, calibration results.

The mask allows also to change

RF channel, to independently

change RX, TX, TCS frequency,

to set RF power, to enable RF

signal generator and to switch

on transmission, to modify

squelch settings.

Eventual modifications will be

lost when resetting the

equipment or changing RF

channel.
