What is the Problem?
Increased CO2concentration resulting in
global warming and other environmental
issues
Increasing energy demand from mainly
dwindling fossil fuel reserves

Why Buildings?
-Buildings are the major users of energy (40-50% of primary energy)
-Buildings result in approximately 40% of CO2 emissions

In the USA;
-HVAC 31.4%
-Lighting 14.1%
-Water heating 8.6%
- i.e. top three uses account for
more than half the energy consumed
in buildings
In Dubai;
-HVAC account for 40% of the
annual electricity production
- and 60% of the peak demandduring summer
How is Energy Used in Buildings?

What is a Green Building?
Many definitions.According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Green
building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that
are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a
building's life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation,
maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. This practice expands andcomplements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility,
durability, and comfort. Green building is also known as a sustainable or
high performance building.

Green Buildings (benefits)
Benefits include:
Reduced environmental footprint
Lower operating costs (energy & maintenance)
Improved IEQ and thus health & productivity
Higher market value
etc

Large number (mainly modeled after LEED) LEED seems the most widespread
Other well know systems include BREEAM and Green Star
Becoming more specialized, e.g. LEED C&S, Interiors, Schools
etc.
All based on the triple bottom line: Environmental, Economical,Social
All are point based systems with compulsory aspects
(prerequisites) and additional aspects that would earn points
toward achieving one of several certification levels.

ESTIDAMA (Sustainability in Arabic)
UAE is ranked 1st/2ndhighest Carbon footprint in the
world
ESTIDAMA Green building assessment system for Abu-Dhabi-UAE was introduced in 2010
Modeled after LEED
Major differences:
Mandatory (one pearl level, can go upto 5 pearls)
Adds a fourth concept (Cultural) Spans Design , construction andpost -occupancy
Higher emphasis on water (23% vs. 5% for LEED
and 2.5% for BREEAM)
Water at same level as Energy (23% vs. 33% for
both LEED and BREEAM)
Three categories: Community, Building and Villa

Study Motivation:
Assess the improvement in building performance should theEstidama guidelines be applied in Dubai instead of the current
regulations.

Methodology
A newly built villa in Dubai is used as a case study to evaluate
different build configurations in accordance with Dubai and Estidamarequirements, the villa is built to a higher standard than that of DM.
The focus will be on the requirements of the building envelop only
(walls, roof and glazing).
Computer simulation (Ecotect from Autodesk) is used to perform the
energy analysis for the different configurations.

Conclusions
Even at the 1 Pearl level, Estidama s Pearl system offer improved thermal
performance compared to the current Dubai regulations (10% reduction in energy
consumption in the case studied).
When designing for 2 Pearls, an energy reduction of 26% compared to the reference
case was achieved (16% more than 1 Pearl).
The optimal configuration resulted in an energy reduction of 37% compared to the
reference case.
Given the extra costs associated with the triple-glazing of the optimal configuration, 2
Pearls seems to offer the best compromise in terms of costs and resulting reduction in
energy consumption.
