> Did You Know?

In 2011-12, Young Audiences provided 900 hours of professional

development to more than 1,900 teachers and artists through-

out Maryland.

> Young Audiences/Arts for Learning, the largest arts-in- education network in the U.S., was founded in Baltimore in 1950.

> There is a growing body of research that links participation in the arts to student achievement; these gains are even greater for at-risk youth.*

> Our workshops have been externally evaluated and proven high-impact!

proven results Young Audiences partners with the Harford County

Public Schools Title I Office to provide year-long training in arts integration for teachers

at schools that need assistance making adequate yearly progress on state standardized

tests. The results of an evaluation of the 2011 Innovative Teaching Institute, which

hosted more than 70 Harford County Title I elementary school teachers, are undeniable—

Young Audiences’ approach to integrating the arts into the classroom works.

The arts dramatically impacted participating teachers’ approach to their subjects,

providing new ways for educators to connect with the state curriculum and

motivate their students to succeed.

Young Audiences partners with the Wolf Trap Institute for Early

Learning Through the Arts to provide artist-in-residence programs

to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms in Maryland.

All Early Learning residencies include embedded professional

development to give you the tools to integrate the arts into your

classroom after the artist has left.

Eighty-five percent of brain development occurs during the first five years of a child’s

life. During this period, participation in the arts encourages positive growth in a child’s

social, physical, intellectual, creative, and emotional development. Wolf Trap residencies

build skills in literacy, self-awareness, self-confidence, problem-solving, and more.

Our teaching artists work collaboratively alongside teachers, demonstrating engaging

strategies for incorporating the arts that are developmentally appropriate and enrich

the learning environment. You will gain a hands-on understanding of the connections

between arts experiences and children’s learning and develop arts-based approaches

on your own and integrate them into your approaches to curriculum topics.

A teaching artist works individually with you to develop appropriate lesson plans

and customize the residency to the needs of your classroom. Each residency includes

orientation and planning, opportunities for the teaching artist to observe class routine,

30-minute participatory sessions led by the teaching artist, and 15-minute follow-up

discussions between the teacher and the artist. You will benefit from mentoring,

coaching, and feedback from the teaching artist.

Pat Cruz YA Education Director

We are proud to have an Education Director with extensive knowledge and first-hand experience as an arts integration teacher in the public school system. In addition to her work at Young Audiences, Pat is an Adjunct Professor for Towson University’s Arts Integration Institute, the Co-Director of the Maryland Teaching Artist Institute (TAI), and a past facilitator for MSDE’s Maryland Artist/Teacher Institute (MATI).

Pat earned a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Towson University and a Masters in Teaching with a focus on Arts Integration from George Mason University. She taught for Baltimore County Public Schools for more than 10 years, during which she helped develop and implement an arts-integrated program, ArtsSmart. The ArtsSmart program integrated drama, music, dance, and visual art with the reading and math curriculum. This program helped to significantly increase test scores in state-mandated reading tests. During her time at Halstead Academy, third-grade Maryland State Assessment reading scores increased by more than 38 percent after only two years of the ArtsSmart program.

Pat has been recognized as a “Rookie of the Year” by the Baltimore County Teachers Association, and “Outstanding Elementary Art Teacher” for her work in Baltimore County by the Maryland Art Education Association. In 2012, Pat was recognized as the Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance (AEMS) Arts Advocate of the Year for her outstanding work as an energetic and tireless arts advocate in our community.

In her position as Young Audiences Education Director, Pat works with teaching artists to provide training and support in aligning programs to the state curriculum and developing lessons with effective and creative assessment tools.

Young Audiences/ Arts for Learning, America’s largest arts-in-education nonprofit, transforms the lives and education of our youth through the arts. We provide artistically excellent programs, expertise, and resources to ensure opportunities for all students. All Young Audiences programs address the Maryland State Curriculum and are a great way to reach all types of learners during and after school.
