Amaziograph was designed and created in 2015 by Hristo Staykov, a 15 years old student at the time.

The name comes from two words: Amazing and Graph.

Amaziograph was designed to support lessons for symmetry and tessellation and help students to discover the beautiful connection between mathematics and art.

Using Amaziograph is all about having fun creating amazing artworks and expressing your creativity. The Amaziograph app is just a tool that helps you to save time from repeating patterns and use it to look for more amazing combinations.

Amaziograph interface and functionality are designed to be very close to the natural way of drawing on paper.

Don’t worry from small imperfections in your artworks, they have their own charm.

Believe us, you will feel like a real artist, not like a computer app user and further in the manual the term

“artist” will be used.


In Amaziograph the drawing, your artwork is called graph.

To create a graph tap on the “+” button at the upper left corner in the Collection view.

To edit existing graphs, tap on the drawing preview.

To manage graphs press “Edit”

Notes:

•Once you delete a graph, you can not restore it.

•If you can not see any of your graphs, make sure the All Amaziographs collection is selected.

The graphs edit menu allows you to:

•Duplicate selected graphs

•Delete selected graphs

•Move selected graphs to different collections

•Share / export selected graphs

The duplicate feature is very useful to create a variances of a graph.

The collection is merely a graph’s tag and does not move its file. All graphs are stored in one folder and are visible when All Amaziographs is selected.

Manage drawings


You can organise your graphs into Collections.

To see your collections, tap the Collections button from the sketchbook screen.

•All your collections are listed in the window that appears. The current collection is marked with “✔”

•To view graphs in a different collection, tap the collection name

•To create a new collection tap the “+” button.

•Tap “Edit” in the small window to change collection names or delete collections

•To move graphs into a collection, select them as described in the previous section, and tap the folder icon

Once the “+” button is pressed to create a new graph the next step is to select a desired symmetry and canvas size. The available current symmetries are:

1. No symmetry

2. Mirror

3. Kaleidoscope 60˚

4. Kaleidoscope 30˚

5. Rotation

6. 3-Mirror kaleidoscope

7. Hexagons + Rotation (6)

8. Hexagons + Rotation (3)

9. Hexagons

10. Squares + Rotation (4)

The number in the brackets shows how many times the rotation will be applied.

Change Canvas size


The Amaziograph app by default uses the size of your iPad screen in pixels.

For old iPad models the screen resolution may be only 1024x768 pixels.

Before selecting a symmetry you can select one of predefined canvas sizes.

Mind that while a bigger canvas gives you more space to work on, it can also lead to a lag in performance.

The canvas size also can be changed later on when drawing the graph.

You can import an image as a background by pressing camera button in new graph window.

You can select an image from photos.

Amaziograph will import the selected photos in the canvas and the symmetry will be “No symmetry”.

Notes:

•The canvas will be resized in accordance to selected photo’s size.

•Images above 4096x4096 px will be resized

•Images that do not fit in the proportions will not be imported


After opening a graph, you will see the screen on the left.

The drawing canvas has a top hidden part, below the menu and system toolbars.

You can zoom into the graph with two fingers.

You can:

•Select between three tools: Brush, Paint Bucket and Eraser

•Select stroke size, opacity and softness

•Change colour

•Manage layers

•Undo and Redo changes

•Change and adjust symmetry

•Change canvas size

•Share the graph

Layers


You can control brush properties by double tap on the brush icon.

You can control:

•Line width, opacity, softness and colour

•Line pattern: solid, dash and dots

The stylus settings are available when Apple Pencil or another supported stylus is connected.

If you do not need to use pressure settings can tap on the icon and green dot will become white.

You can control the sensitivity level selecting: Low, Medium or High

If the stylus has buttons you can assign functions. This is not available for Apple Pencil.

You can select between brush Size or Opacity to be changed when pressure is applied.

The eraser tool acts as a brush drawing tool and has the same properties.

The difference is that it deletes to alfa channel.

This can be use to mix images in third party software.

You can use the eraser tool to make visible the layer under the current one.

The fill bucket tool allows the artist quickly to fill homogeneous colour areas with new colour.

You can select colour and opacity of the bucket tool.

NOTE:

•When the symmetry is On the fill will be replicated in accordance of the symmetry.

•When the symmetry is Off only the selected area will be fill.

•Applying the fill bucket tool in the beginning will change the background of the canvas.

•The initial canvas colour is a transparent alfa channel that can be exported in PNG format.


The Amaziograph colour palette is unique with the colour mixing approach.

There are nine base colours and artist’s custom colours palette.

To mix a new colour drag a colour from a base or custom colour cell to a new cell and use mix gesture to get a new colour. If you repeat a mix gesture - moving left an right the stylus or finger the new colour will get more from the selected colour till get 100% of the selected colour. The info will show you animation hot to mixture the colours.

To create a gradient colours between two colours in the custom palette, you have to select the colours by fingers and and move fingers towards each other. The cell in between will fill automatically with gradient colours.

When you holds the finger or stylus on the custom colour cell new menu will appear from where you can mix a new colour in RGB mixer or type a colour HEX code. From this menu you can pick a colour from the graph.

The great artists have never used a computer colour wheel.

The colour palette is designed to have the same behaviour as natural colour mixing to support students in elementary schools, not to loosing a sense of mixing colours.


Now you are ready to create your first artwork.

The graph is created by using the following sequence:

•Select a new graph with standard canvas size and “2 mirror kaleidoscope” symmetry

•Select a “black’ colour and use fill bucket tool to change the canvas background

•Crete a customise colour

•Select a midsize brush with softness

•Free style drawing

Amaziograph supports layers from ver. 5.

The number of layers is limited by memory of the iPad model.

Every new graph is created only with one layer. To add/remove layers you have to touch the layer button.

To create a layer touch the “+” button in the layer menu.

The layer name by default is Layer <layer number>. Afterwards you can name the layer as you want.

When you swipe the layer Right to Left, you can clear the layer content or delete the layer.

When you swipe the layer Left to Right, you can Hide/Unhide or electing Adjust, you will be able to control the layer opacity.

To reorder the layers, select a layer and move up or down.

Every layer can have its own symmetry. To change the layer symmetry, you have to select the layer and to go to Symmetry menu

Using layers, you can create, even more amazing artworks.

The drawing on the screenshot is created in six simple steps:

•Select New drawing and import a photo.

•Create and new layer and use the grid to draw lines and create a frame.

•Create a new layer with the same symmetry: Hexagons + Rotation (6) and repeat the lines again with bigger size brush.

•Return to the second layer and change the symmetry to Hexagons + Rotation (6).

•Use the fill bucket to fill the shapes.

•Change the layer opacity.

Now is time for amazing artworks


Of course as artist you need a flexibility to change summitries and adjust symmetry settings fro every layer

Tap on Symmetry settings button to:

•Turn On/Off the symmetry.

•Turn On/Off the symmetry grid.

•Hide the grid one you zoom out. This helps to see the drawing without the grid.

•Change the symmetry. Amaziograph suggests the first the symmetries based on the selected previous one. To select another symmetry, touch More Symmetries

•Adjust the symmetry grid

When you select Adjust grid, Amaziograph will show options to change the grid in accordance of selected symmetry.

To adjust symmetry grid tap and move one of the grid pins or change number of axis.

Depends on the symmetry Amaziograph shows adjust grid presets.

Using them you can quickly adjust the grid.

On the screen shots you can see how quickly you can make your canvas a perfect tile that can use afterwards to create fabrics or envelope paper.

If your canvas has ratio 4:3, everything that you need to do is to press 4:3 button and the pins will be positioned automatically.

But you want the tiles to be shifted, like bricks. It is so easy, just press half or a third shift button.

•Every symmetry has specific presets

•You cannot use tiles from every symmetry, this is possible only in Tiles and only when you have selected the right presets.

The presets give unique opportunity to do create combination in one type of symmetry, using factors of multiplying or dividing by two.

Knowing the proportion of your canvas, when you use a Tile symmetry, you can split the canvas on exact number of tiles and can use it afterwards as one tile in other applications or easy to crop a tile.

Of course always can use the pins to create your own grid

Adjust symmetry grid - Presets

NOTE:

In Tiles symmetry you can use presets to:

•Divide the canvas on exact number of tiles - useful for fabric pattern design

•Using standard screen size canvas the best is to use 4x3 preset

•For square canvas you can use 3x3 or 4x4

•Do not forget that the canvas size shall be divided by 3 or 4 to get integer tile size

•Multiply or divide by 2 the size of tiles


Now is time to pick up a colour form the graph.

•Tap on the colour icon (colour circle)

•Hold on on the cell of the customised colours

•Wait to appear a window RGB mixing and Pick up colour.

•Select Pick colour

•Move the picker - the colour in a circle will change in accordance where is the left down corner of the picker

•To finish colour selection tap on Done

You can open Preferences from the More “˚˚˚” window.

In the preferences you can turn Off and On the following options:

•Handedness - change the position of Undo and Redo buttons. By default is Right.

•Undo Symmetry changes - on is On, you can go back to previous symmetry with Undo, when is Off, you cannot return to previous symmetry, using Undo or Redo.

•Shape recognition - This function allows you to draw free curves and Amaziograph will recognise and convert them to:

•Straight line.

•Circle.

Some tricks in the preferences


The screenshot shows the difference with using Shape recognition function.

With red colour is an attempt to draw a straight line and circle, when the Shape recognition is Off. The pressure sensitivity is turned on and selected to change the brush opacity.

Which green colour is the result when the Shape recognition is On.

If you use pressure sensitivity for brush size and opacity, you should not worry, it will be kept in the corrected curve.

Everything that you have to do is to draw almost a circle or a straight line.

Lets use shape recognition

NOTE:

The Shape recognition requires more processor time and you can face minor delays.

You have to practice a little bit, before you are get to using it.


The Amaziograph app is a raster image drawing app and lines are project in a raster grid. This can cause a pixelation depending on canvas size an artist hands.

To reduce this effect the you can use line softness. The line softness creates artificial brush softness and reduces pixelation effect.

The pixelation effect can be reduced by using a bigger brush sizes.

It is normal to see pixels in the most thin lines and when you have maximum zoom in. This effect can be seen in other similar apps, when the same line settings are used.

Another way to improve line smoothness is to increases the canvas size.

The screen shots show the difference between line smoothness on iPad Pro 9.7 “ with Apple Pencil and minimum brush size, same line settings and no zoom in.

The digital artworks needs to be print.

The A4 format (210x297 mm, 8.27”x11.69”) is

•2480 x 3508 pixels in 300 dpi (print resolution).

•595 pixels x 842 pixels in 72 dpi (screen resolution).

The A3 format (297x420 mm, 11.69”x16.54”) is

•3508 x 4961 pixels in 300 dpi (print resolution).

•842 x 1191 pixels in 72 dpi (screen resolution).

At any time the you can change the graph size.

Tap on Resize and Share button (three dots).

Select Change Canvas size.

Define the new size. You can select to keep the proportions or to unlock the W/H ratio and change the proportions. The minimum size is 256 px and maximum is 4096 px.

There are two options for resize the graph: Stretch and Expand.

In the Expand you can select direction to expand the graph. You have to select where is the graph is anchored.

Tap on Resize button to execute the resize.

As result new graph will be created with the new size.

After applying the Expand you will get a new graph where the expanded area will be in transparent colour (alpha channel).

You can check the size using again Resize and Share button and Change Canvas size.

From the experience we know that Amaziograph app can be very addictive and very soon you will end up of hundreds of graphs.

It will be possible to scroll over All Amaziograph, but the better way is to create Collections and group graphs in collections.

In All Amaziograph you still be able to see all graphs. Be very careful of deleting files from All Amaziograph, because they will be deleted from the collection, too.

It is a good idea you to keep only the most valuable artworks and as a backup to store them in Photos as a JPG or PNG.

From Amaziograph ver. 5 you can share your drawings with others and they can be able to continue to work and return back to you.

To share your artwork with others, perform the following steps:

•Return to Collections.

•Press Edit.

•Select the graph.

•Press Share button.

•Select Amaziograph File.

•Select the method - preferable by mail or Airdrop.

Work in teams

NOTE:

At the Dropbox and Box, due to unknown reasons do not allow to store Amaziograph files, using Share functionality of iOS.


Every artist can share artworks.

Tap on Resize and Share button (three dots).

Select Share.

You can include or not the symmetry grid or include transparency.

When the Include transparency is OFF the file will be in JPG format and when is ON it will be in PNG format.

Tap on Share button and select how to share the graph.

You can share the graph in Amaziograph file format, too.

Share your artworks

NOTE:

Use Save Image to sea the graph in Photos

Use Print to print fro the iPad.

Clear button will clean the canvas and all layers

Use Share to publish direct your artwork in Instagram or Facebook or Twitter

Amaziograph ver. 5 allows you to see all amaziograph files in Apple Files app.

From here you can copy them, move to iCloud or send to your personal backup storage.

You can use Files to send corrupted files for further investigation at [email protected]

Manage your artworks in Files

NOTE:

All files will be removed when you remove the Amaziograph app from your iPad.

Perform regular achieving of your artworks.

Some of the artworks will not have thumbnail, because they have been created with lower versions.
