School Direct (SD) is one of the main routes into teaching. It enables schools and groups of schools to recruit and select the trainees that best meet their needs, with the expectation that those teachers will go on to work in the group of schools where they trained. School Direct will lead to the award of

qualified teacher status (QTS) and the award of a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE).

Portswood Teaching School Alliance offer Primary and Secondary SchoolDirect placements in partnership with the University of Southampton. WithSchool Direct you can hand pick high achieving graduates and they will bepart of your team from day one. School Direct offers careers, not justteacher training, allowing you to attract and retain the best recruits. Ourtraining programme has been developed to provide our School Directteachers with the skills they need to teach in our City schools. Thispackage is delivered by schools within our Alliance and the University ofSouthampton. Our training evaluations have been exceptional and this, together with the day to day support of our trainees in school, means thatour NQTs are confident and ready to take on their own classes inSeptember.

School Direct is a way of ‘growing your own’ teachers and future leaders; it can make a key contribution to your school improvement strategy and help the continuing professional development of your staff.

Programme Cost

School Direct (tuition fee) places - unsalaried, training placesThese places are open to all graduates and funded by tuition fees paid bythe trainee. Trainees may be eligible for a training bursary or scholarship.

School Direct (salaried) placesThese places are aimed at graduates with 3 or more years’ work experience.Trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher, on the unqualifiedteacher scale. NCTL provides funding to lead schools to cover training costsand subsidise trainee salaries.

FeedbackWe have had enormous success with the first 4 cohorts and the fifth cohortwill begin their training in September 2017. The University's ownevaluations show that our training is highly rated by the trainees themselves. All teachers trained within the alliance have secured employment for theirNQT year, and the vast majority have remained within the alliance sincetraining with us.

Benefits of School Direct for your school:• Stronger partnerships with other local schools, across teaching phases, within the

Portswood Teaching School Alliance.• Development of tailored training programmes with PTSA and University of

Southampton.• Opportunity to recruit the right person for your school.• Customised training to suit the needs of your school and trainee. • Ongoing training from PTSA allows schools to develop own staff-from the initial

training, through the NQT year and beyond.

Bespoke Coaching Support Packages

Good or better learning for every child, for every lesson 26

The Portswood Teaching School Alliance is committed to using coaching as a key lever for school improvement. This model has alsobeen applied in school to school support work and has had a significant impact upon standards in supported schools. The model

has now been recognised Nationally through the NCTL research project undertaken across the PTSA.

The coaching referred to involves all forms of coaching but focuses particularly on in-class direct coaching of teachers. This includes ‘Parrot on the shoulder coaching’ and direct modeling of classroom techniques as well as encouraging reflection that is “associated with collegial enquiry, critical thinking and expanding teacher repertoires” (Blasé and Blasé, 1998).

Portswood Teaching School Alliance has provided coaching training for a number of schools and the creation of coaching roles in Southampton schools has increased rapidly, particularly at Assistant Head level, showing the acceptance that coaching is integral to school improvement.

o 3 x ½ day training package which includes a ½ day introduction at Portswood, a follow up ½ day of coaching in your own school and then more ½ days on a consultancy basis that can adapt to the needs of the school

o 1 day coaching audit where your coaches could be observed, receive feedback, advice and support on the coaching programme your school offers

This training can be adapted for senior or middle leaders and can respond to the needs of the school.

These informal sessions will:

o Bring you up to date with the latest research on coaching & mentoringo Provide case studies of successful coaching & mentoringo Discuss real life issues that we all face

Feedback

“The coaching group is useful because it gives coaches the chance to discuss with each other strategies for different situations. We can share successes and things that did not go so well and learn from each other. We discuss this and link to the work that we do, thinking about how it could develop our practice. We then take this away to share with others in our school. The meetings also help our Alliance to develop a consistent approach to coaching across the schools”.

Research

Good or better learning for every child, for every lesson 28

The PTSA has been at the forefront of Teaching School Research since 2010 and has led on a number of national research projects. We work closely with our colleagues from Southampton University and Winchester University and we are keen to take on new

projects. Research features at all stages of our career progression, from School Direct to Headship training.

The approach to research projects has been at three levels:

Large scale national projects

The PTSA was successful in publishing a Theme 3 NCSL Research Project into “How can leaders lead successful teaching school alliances which enable the development of consistently great pedagogy?”

Work developed and shared across the alliance

A second layer of research work occurs across schools within the Alliance or is work that is begun in one school and then shared more widely across the Alliance. Currently a project is examining the writing in the Early Years.

Small scale enquiry projects

The PTSA funds small scale action research projects that originate from teacher interest and school relevance. The PTSA is looking to support more research projects. If you are interested in undertaking any research yourself then please contact Dr Keith Watson, and he will guide you through the process.

Email: Keith Watson ([email protected] )Website: http://www.ptsa.org.uk/research/

If you would like to bid for funding please complete the ‘Research Bid Document’ downloaded from the research section of the PTSA website.

This year we will be launching a series of Teacher Talks. These will be informal gatherings of like-minded teacherswho want to network and share ideas. These sessions willnot be courses but instead invoke mini-presentations fromteachers which are full of practical ideas on a range ofareas. Equally as important will be the opportunity to chatwith other teachers about teaching and enjoy a well-earned coffee and cake.

These sessions will sometimes be at the PTSA Trainingsuite but also at a other venues depending upon the focusfor the session.
