Alzheimer’s Australia Vic is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offering a wide range of contemporary education to the health sector, families and carers of people with dementia and the general community.

Cancellation policyCancellations or non-attendance at workshops will incur costs as per schedule below:• Cancellations with less than 5 business days notice − 50% of training credits provided;• Cancellations with 5 or more business days notice − full refund or equivalent training credits provided.A minimum number of participants is required for courses to proceed. Course fees will be fully refunded if your course is cancelled by Alzheimer’s Australia Vic.

Training credits 1 training credit is equivalent to $1. Training credits are valid for 12 months only.

These courses are endorsed by APEC No 0406288 as authorised by Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) according to approved criteria. Attendance attracts RCNA Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) points at the rate of one point per hour of training as per the RCNA’s Life Long Learning Program (3LP). CNE points for each course are listed.

The focus of the session is on how dementia changes communication and possible alternate communication strategies which may be helpful. We also discuss dealing with over-reactions of a person with dementia and how to support the person who is distressed.

Suitable for: Family and friends of a person diagnosed with dementia who already have a basic understanding of dementia and who need assistance with effective communication.

cOPING WItH cHANGES IN BEHAVIOuRThis program deals with some of the changes in behaviour caused by dementia as well as the possible triggers to these behaviours. We teach participants a problem-solving approach which helps carers to understand and better manage these changes.

Suitable for: Family carers who need support coping with changed behaviours.

mILD cOGNItIVE ImPAIRmENt (mcI)– what this diagnosis means for youPresenter: Dr Maree Farrow Biography page 43

This program discusses differences between normal ageing, MCI and dementia. We identify some of the cognitive difficulties which may be experienced by persons with MCI; explore the possible causes of MCI and the changes in brain function that can occur. We also look at current understanding about MCI diagnosis, progression and treatment; look at ways you can be better prepared to deal with the impact of MCI.

Suitable for: People who have been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and their families.

cOPING WItH cARER StRESS

The group will provide participants with the opportunity to meet other carers in a similar situation to themselves and to learn new skills to better manage the emotional demands of being a carer.

tHE cARING ROLE A cOmPASSIONAtE APPROAcHWhile this program includes information about dementia, changes and communication it also incorporates the loss and grief associated with becoming a carer. We talk about how to create an environment to facilitate the caring role as well as maintaining and getting support as a carer.

Suitable for: Family carers who are ready to reflect on their new role and relationship with their family member living with dementia and who can participate in a longer (4 week) group program.

cONSIDERING RESIDENtIAL cARE In this program we discuss the difficult decision of when to decide that residential care is needed, including the barriers to making the decision and the emotional issues for families regarding placement. Information is also provided about the residential care system, including the different types of care available and where to get information and what services to contact. Important legal issues are also outlined. Discussion of the family’s new role and how they can continue to care is included in this program.

Suitable for: Family carers at the point of considering residential care for a family member with dementia.

DEPRESSION AND DEmENtIAThis program talks about the distinction and connection between depression and dementia as well as strategies to support a depressed person. Information about where and how to get help is also included as well as self-care for the family carer.

David Ames psychiatry training took place at Royal Melbourne Hospital 1982-4, Friern and the Royal Free Hospitals, London UK 1984-5, before his appointment as Research Fellow and honorary lecturer at the Royal Free Hospital 1985-7, where he completed his doctoral thesis on depression in residential homes for the elderly. Holding positions including Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the Psychiatry of Old Age for the University of Melbourne, he co-founded Melbourne’s first Memory clinic (1988), which served as a model for the statewide CADMS clinics, introduced in 1998. David is Director of the National Ageing Research Institute and University of Melbourne Foundation Professor of Ageing & Health and is Chief Investigator on the Australian Imaging Biomarkers & Lifestyle Study of Ageing. David Ames has published over 180 papers in peer reviewed journals and has co-edited or co-written 18 books.

Richard Freadman is the recently retired Professor of English and Director of the Unit for Studies in Biography and Autobiography. In the field of life writing he is the author of books on autobiography and the will (Threads of Life), Australian Jewish autobiography (This Crazy Thing a Life), and a memoir about his father’s life and their relatioship as father and son (Shadow of Doubt). He currently works as a volunteer in the Eastern Palliative Care Biography Program and has a strong interest in the uses of life writing in dementia support. He is also interested in illness life writing more generally and is currently working on the final chapters of a collection of biographical and autobiographical narratives entitled The Coming of Age at Peconic.

Presenter: Dr Cameron Camp Ph.D

Cameron Camp is a noted psychologist specialising in Applied Research in Gerontology. He received his doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Houston in 1979. He has served in academic settings, teaching coursework in adult development and aging and rising to the position of Research Professor of Psychology and currently serves as Director of Research for the Center for Applied Research in Dementia. Camp gives workshops on designing cognitive and behavioural interventions for dementia internationally. His current research involves: use of Montessori-based activities as rehabilitative interventions and has co-authored three college textbooks and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles.

Presenter: Laurel Gourlay BA (Social Sciences), Grad Dip Ed, Grad Dip Arts (Social Sciences), Cert IV in Training and Assessment

Laurel has had 16 years’ experience working as a facilitator within the aged and community care sectors, developing curriculum and resources for a variety of courses and audiences, and delivering dementia education to a wide range of client groups including health professionals, family carers, volunteers and the broad community. Nine years have been with Alzheimer’s

Australia Vic. Laurel commenced her education career as an English and Social Sciences teacher in the Victorian secondary system and made the transition to adult education in the mid-1990s specialising in dementia care education as a result of a family experience with dementia. Laurel is currently Program Manager – Community, Learning & Development team within Alzheimer’s Australia Vic.

Presenter: Dr Rosalie HudsonRN, B App Sc (Adv Nsg Admin), B Theol, Grad Dip Ger. PhD

Associate Professor Rosalie Hudson lectures in the School of Nursing & Social Work at the University of Melbourne. Rosalie has presented papers on Aged Care both at a national and international level. She has been published widely in leading publications on all aspects of Aged Care, including the highly acclaimed “Dementia Nursing: A Guide to Practice” (2003) and (co-authored) Palliative Care and Aged Care (2007). She has over twelve years practical experience as Director of Nursing at an aged care facility, and ten years experience as a community nurse. Rosalie is an experienced and enthusiastic presenter on all aspects of dementia care.

Dr Maree Farrow is a Research Fellow with Alzheimer’s Australia Vic and the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre – Early Diagnosis and Prevention, and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Research on Ageing, Health and Wellbeing at the Australian National University. She completed her PhD in cognitive neuroscience at the Brain Sciences Institute, Swinburne University of Technology, and has over 15 years research experience in this field. Her research has involved studies of cognitive function in development, ageing and brain disorders. She has developed a range of resources and e-health tools for community education about dementia and reducing the risk. Dr Farrow’s current interests include risk reduction and early intervention for dementia and translating research evidence into practice.

A well respected presenter, Kirsten has been using and teaching Complementary Therapies in a variety of settings for almost 20 years. Kirsten currently works as a Behaviour Consultant with the Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service Victoria.

Kathryn has extensive experience as an educator in the health care industry. Kathryn’s PhD explored caring in the presence of dementia with Lewy bodies. She has presented her findings at numerous conferences in Australia and overseas.

Sue Foley has developed therapeutic horticulture programs in residential aged care in both the private and public health sectors over the past 8 years working with both low and high care residents and more recently in psycho-geriatric care. Sue has presented at several state HTAV conferences (Horticultural Therapy Association of Victoria) as guest speaker and also Melbourne University to students studying their Masters of Urban Horticulture and in therapeutic gardening at Burnley College.

Presenter: Juanita BekinschteinAdv Dip Translating & Intepreting, BA (Drama), Cert IV TAE

Juanita is a passionate teacher delivering exciting hands on Montessori workshops. She is a qualified teacher of Drama and has worked in Argentina and Sydney. Following this she studied at RMIT to become a qualified translator and interpreter for English/ Spanish. She worked in court rooms, community settings and hospitals as an interpreter. This lead her to her most recent work as an activities worker in Aged Care. In 2008, with a long standing understanding and admiration for Montessori methodology, she researched and introduced the Montessori Philosophy to her activities work. Juanita is still working in aged care.

Dr Loretta Quinn has had diverse experience in the field of Music Therapy in the areas of aged care, dementia and palliative care. She specialises in the areas of aged care, dementia, the primary and professional carers of people with dementia, both in the community and aged care setting. She recently completed a PhD in Music Therapy and dementia at the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI )and Melbourne University (Conservatorium of Music). Being also a Div 1 nurse, and of Italian background, Loretta has a unique, engaging and practical approach to her workshops, and music products, ensuring they are user friendly, particularly to people who do not have a musical background. People do NOT have to be musical to benefit from Music Therapy. The only prerequisite is having a liking for music, either just listening to it, or engaging in it for e.g. singing.
