KENT STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE

PODIATRIC MEDICINE AS A PROFESSION

Podiatric medicine is the branch of medicine that

deals with the diagnosis and surgical, physical,

mechanical, and medical treatment of the foot and

ankle. A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine can treat a

variety of ailments, from bunions to reconstructive

ankle surgery. Other ailments treated in podiatric

medicine include corns, neuromas, ingrown nails,

hammer toes, calluses, heel pain, sprains, fractures,

infections and injuries.

In addition, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine can

specialize in a variety of areas, including sports

medicine, diabetic wound care, dermatology,

radiology, pediatrics and surgery. They work in a

variety of settings including private practices,

clinics, hospitals, and educational environments.

Many podiatrists own their own businesses. Podia-

trists are the only doctors to receive specialized

medical and surgical training and board certification

in the care of the lower extremity.

having attended the internship.” -Shayne E., University of Toledo

“This internship is a sure-fire way to confirm or make you more aware of your interest in podiatry. The

clinical and surgical experience you obtain is one-of-a-kind. No other program competes with the

opportunity this program has opened to me. Because I came, I know that podiatry is truly the field for

me!” -Shawniece B., Thiel College

“I’m glad that I decided to participate in this internship. It has given me a much better idea of podiatry

as a profession. I had a great time here!” - Destiny M., Johns Hopkins University

“I feel the internship experience gave me an inside look into the life of a podiatrist and a student here at
