BIO
My name is Tanner Hall and I am an Oklahoma State University alum. Following graduation, I recieved a unique offer to work and live in Beijing, China. This experience allowed me to grow and mature as an
individual as well as an architect.
This work sample includes several of my most successful projects from my Beijing work experience. The selected projects range in scale and funtion; I chose to represent each project with a specific set of images that tell the unique story of each solution. The timeframe for this collection is just over two years, and it is meant to
showcase my devleopment as a young architect.

The Puyu twin office towers were a unique project located in a future development in the mountainous region of Yulin, located just West of Beijing. The entire surrounding site was basically undeveloped, but construction was already beginning. I had the opportunity to work with the client and his friend who were looking for two identical towers that shared no connections leading to several
design challenges.
The desired program consisted of a retail base, a public restaurant floor, multiple open office floors, a private chairman suite floor with pool, matching helipads, and a public plaza space facing the future park just to the
South of the site.
Developers around the site use sidehill cuts in the mountain in order to provide streets and flat ground for construction. After seeing the process of serrating the edges of the mountain, it ended up becoming the visual
statement of the curtain wall shape.
The Puyu twin office towers was one of the first projects I was able to lead design beginning with the concept massing all the way through design development. I still
remain hopeful it will someday be built.

The Tangshan Bay masterplan offered a unique opportunity to design a new resort-style complex in two neighboring parcels. The primary goal was to lure people living in the nearby metropolises to this newer, cleaner, and more sustainable beach front development. Our team chose to add several attractions including an island waterpark, resort hotels, retail complexes, beach front housing, marinas, and even private boat docks to the site in order to increase traffic and interest among
visitors. After many studies of shape and function, the island site shape chosen is meant to embrace the unique floating hotel and water park, and to provide public canals flanked by multi-story condos and retail. The topography of the island is also designed so nearly every residential
unit will have views to the ocean.
The beach parcel took shape rather naturally when following the rest of the proposed massing around the site. Our team began by building tallest opposite the beach and gradually delineate height as it stepped closer to the water. This strategy naturally provides the best views for residents in the condos, hotels, and natural hot spring resorts. We also carried a paved plaza littered with pools and vegetation down the middle of the site to help provide relief for pedestrians when moving from
place to place.

The Chicago O’Hare Lake Community project is a unique mixed-use project located just a short distance from O’Hare International Airport. The project is targeted and designed for Chinese investors due to shared contacts among the team. The complex is composed of high-end residential towers, four open office towers, two five-star hotels with conference centers, and a lake-front
boardwalk with retail and a community center.
The proximity of the complex to the O’Hare International Airport along with the targeted clients, make convenience and access the driving forces in the design of the project.
The design is essentially split into three zones, with an existing reservoir helping to organize the pieces into a continuous whole. The office towers and residential towers are anchored with four-story parking garages littered with retail which help activate and connect the water-front pedestrian boardwalk. The two hotels are grounded with a multistory retail mall with dining options on the landscaped roof garden which overlook the lake.
The Chinese design influence can be found in the layout of the residential towers. This can be seen in the orientation and organization of the towers allowing for cross ventilation through each unit, as well as providing
maximum sunlight into all living spaces.

The South Korean masterplan for P-Town was a painstaking challenge that ended up being one of my favorite design projects. It’s the first project that brought our team out of China, and allowed us to explore a new Asian culture. After our visit, we were able to move the project in a positive direction and settle on our masterplan
strategy.
The concept for P-Town is based on the collaboration and mixture of both an urban and naturalistic approach. Although a single massing, the complex is divided into separate buildings from the exterior to help promote urban diversity highly desired by the client. Each separate officetel tower is designed around a large, stepped atrium
allowing maximum natural light and better ventilation.
The rooftop garden brings a unity to the overall vision, and the stepped gardens are an homage to the neighboring burial mounds sacred to the region. The large reflection pool is the top of the ‘janggu’ drum and serves as roof for the suspended café for the retail spaces below. The ‘janggu’ was instrumental in shaping the retail, roof garden, and overall layout for the P-Town development.

The Wasu Digital Communications design competition stemmed from the company’s need to provide employees with a sophisticated work environment that can help spur creativity and a more positive work experience. The project, located in southern China, includes seven towers linked by a two-story spine littered with retail and public gathering areas that all frame a large landscaped square. Each tower has access to an expansive roof
garden with meeting areas and dining options.
The competition was a very short and intense process that had our design team developing a schematic interior package of more than 90,000 sm of high-end public, dining, office, meeting, and hospitality spaces in just under two weeks. The competition allowed our team to create and design our contemporary vision, which was quickly followed by a presentation of our work to a panel of company leaders where we were chosen as the
winners.
The project was inspired by other technical corporate campuses including Apple, Google, and Volkswagen. We chose to use a simple interior palate with emphasis on natural wood, neutral colors, as well as incorporating digital media to the walls in forms of banners and large screens to keep staff current with local and world news.

The Li’An masterplan in Sanya was a profound opportunity to plan and design a new style of beachfront property on a beautiful Hainan island beach. The 350 MU design was a balancing act of three main zones: support team service apartments, a state guesthouse with hotel and water garden village, and a slew of winter entrepreneurial studios for artists to live, work, and play.
The form of the support team service apartments is meant to mimic the natural surroundings. There is a steep mountain just south of the site, which is represented by the towers in their tiered design. We also chose to arc the towers around the lake providing optimum views to the lake or ocean for every unit. To help with shading in the tropical climate, each unit has a multi-meter deep planted
balcony that will help to promote a green lifestyle.
The design of the entrepreneurial studios was a particularly tough challenge as the client was adamant about seeing something unique, while providing each studio with an uninterrupted view of the ocean. Our solution involved reducing the footprint as much as possible by lifting the ground level, providing parking under the unit, and staggering the studios in groups to allow maximum desirable views. Each studio is also littered with green
space balconies to enhance the connection to nature.
For the state guesthouse and hotel, we allowed the water to flow underneath to provide a unique water garden and chapel facing the ocean. There are also small villa houses for rent scattered in the water garden, with each having a private deck along the water. The state guesthouse is meant to be more private, with an isolated drive for access. It has large guest rooms and meeting spaces with clear views of the ocean to the East and bay to the North.

The Citic Masterplan Development was a landmark project for VOA due to its location, size, and cultural impact. The project is located in the heart of the Beijing CBD and a mere three kilometers East of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The 200,000 sm site is divided into three parcels with the largest and most prominent located on the South portion facing the busy, retail oriented Chang’An. Our team chose to zone the large parcel into three categories to help
organize residential and public spaces.
The public park zone is the southern part of the site, and satisfies the 70m setback required set by city officials. This zone includes access to the underground retail mall via a sunken plaza, as well as serve as an entrance one of the most expansive subway systems
in the world.
The commercial zone is just north, allowing it to be activated by the immense flow of pedestrians along the public park zone. This zone is mixed-use loaded with on-grade restaurants and retail, three five-star hotels, and expansive Class A office space. This fully loaded arch tops the charts at 390m. If built, it would
be one the tallest buildings in all of Beijing.
Further North of these zones is the residential portion of the project. The towers serve primarily as service apartments following specific lighting and cross ventilation conditions set by the city. These towers are flanked to the East and West by small scale retail blocks to help meld the complex with the rest of the urban fabric. Centered around the residential towers is an expansive private park with a health club and
spa for future residents.
Our team decided on the Arch shape as an iconic and symbolic statement to the city. The Arch is meant to be a gateway for the city and also serve as an icon for Beijing. The structure would become a meeting point around the CBD and the unique hotel on top would provide unprecedented views of the cityscape below.

After we found out from the client the Arch scheme for the Citic development most likely wouldn’t get passed, we set out to find some alternative schemes to satisfy the problem. I was given the opportunity to develop my own masterplan and have it issued to the Beijing government for a chance at approval. Despite being a very brief exercise, the primary focus was on the idea of splitting the block with an X in order to draw in pedestrians, provide convenient access across the city block, and allow unique views through the fabric
of the city not normally seen.
I chose to assign the residential zone to the southern-most towers on the site, providing supreme uninterrupted views for future residents. The other towers would house world class office spaces with five star hotels located at their tops. With each tower reaching 280 m tall, the program is still providing upwards of 1.2 million sm of program. Each pedestrian oriented street is flanked with several floors of retail, trees and water features, restaurants, entertainment,
and public gathering spaces.
