Starting professional practice a week late I did not get an opportunity to get in a group of four for the task so I ended up in a group of six only knowing three people out of the group which were two graphic design colleagues, meeting in Costa after the lecture discuss our ideas for the visual representation of the poem that was already chosen by the group. This being chosen by the group the week before I came, the first idea I remember hearing had something to do with an origami letter, but I then suggested to do a idea working around the idea of tears as I felt the poem dealt with love and sadness and people can cry out of either sadness or happiness which the song lyrics expressed to me and us a group. With an idea given by Niall about not expressing the feeling with just colour and the particular colours being Black and white we chose to keep that idea prevalent and came to the idea of mixing a black and white material or substance together to express the feelings written. After further discussion we came up with the final idea which was to photograph the process of two liquid substances that don’t chemically mix together to show abstractly every feeling we felt came with two different people being in love with each other. The idea then was photographed and finished by the photography students in our group purposely choosing not to have a graphic input because we felt it wasn’t needed. Working with the group for me partially was easy as I only contributed with giving the idea and the photographers doing the rest

T A S K 2This being the first time groups were selected randomly I was interested how the dimanic of the group and how we would work together as three photographers and two graphic designers. Taking advantage of the difference between the two mediums we practice we chose our exhibition to be both a Photography and Graphic design art show entitled “Cube” choosing that name to express the different sides and types of art we practice and that will exhibited. Our flyer and digital exhibition posters both being designed by me, the flyer being a actual cube made out of card or a heavy weight of paper instead of a traditional flat paper flyer because we felt it reflected on the name being a shape. The cube consisting of the date of the exhibition, the exhibitions logo, location, sponsor and QR Code would be made physically from the paper cut out and put into artistic environments like art galleries, art retail stores like London graphic centre, Atlantis and Cass art as well as educational art schools generally targeting the artistic people of London we feel will be interested in a graphic design and photography. In addition to that being the reason we chose Absolut Vodka to be the sponsor to our exhibition as with feeling they would or want to stand behind something like this with their vast and artistically intriguing history of art driven, directed and derived advertisements, backing of the art scene and feel they bring with their product. The QR being the focal point of our idea wanting to take full advantage of today’s modern technology and feeling like it gave our idea a second part, each person in the group having their own cube and scanning the Qr code bringing you to their individual exhibition poster.

In addition, having the cross on the design relating to the template that makes the cube and using it artistically as a way to inversely desaturate the space around the cross to bring attention to the part of the artwork in the cross as well as to create something that looks visually pleasing. Being in a group of six with more photography students then graphic students I didn’t expect much from my group members in the way of doing all or handling most of the work being photographers which I did digitally with asking my group members to send me the artwork they felt represented them and would like on their poster.

T A S K 3Starting off our idea discussion in the library we spent time talking about things we felt strongly about with the subjects ranging from serious matters like racism, anti-smoking, sexism, the feeling creating gives us and unserious more playful ideas like people with that smell bad, people that take up too much space, fetishes, and nosey mothers but overall feeling in this first discussion that we didn’t have really any strong, solid and confident ideas. This discussion only being with 5 members of our 6 person group and the person missing from the first discussion being Jasmine Salvador, but added to the chosen place where the group would discuss our ideas and plans being Facebook she was added to our group conversation where more ideas were discussed but no solid solutions.

15 Nov 2012: Meeting up in the AVA building with all group members except vassanth we thoroughly discussed ideas, the two in particular that stood out which were:

1. To take a famous piece of work we felt could of been better in some way and recreating as a group combining graphic design and photography or just one depending on what we happened to be creating. Or alternatively give each member a part of the work to create in his or hers medium and desired way which would of been photographically or graphically and digitally putting them back together like a puzzle of everybody’s idea’s. Which when completed would create a response with varying in answers to make one answer that would be full of answers displaying conceptually the individual talents of our group and the idea of answering a question.

2. To recreate a famous piece of art or a piece of art that sold for a lot of money that had nothing to do with the art itself but more with the name of the person that did it to show that it takes more than talent, good ideas and creativity to make it in or as a artist in the art world.

The group’s general reception to the first was that well I remember Jay cook saying he thought it seemed babyish to just recreate something because you don’t like it and Grace feeling like this wasn’t working as a group and felt we should do something all working together and jasmine didn’t get the idea at all. The only group members getting the idea and wanting to go forward with it was me and Gurpreet and the other 3 members not wanting to do the idea we aborted it as we were out numbered. I was more confident in this idea as I felt we would have to recreate the chosen artwork exactly with no flaws or blemishes to make it hard to a normal persons eye to choose which is the original made by the artist and which isn’t made by us and feeling that we may not be able to do that. Going with the second idea, we discussed artist’s work we could recreate with both a graphic design and photography whether it was digital or physical ending piece of artwork. We looked the photography of Man ray, portrait work of Andy Warhol which involved photography and graphic design, the idea behind and the creation of Yves Klein’s colour blue but came to the artist Damien Hirst and the seemingly blandness of his work. Targeting the “Spot” paintings because of the blatant simplicity the paintings possess recreate this to express our point.

22 Nov 12:

Equipped with two canvases bought by Jay and lots of paint by Gurpreet and a stencils designed by me for to paint the individual spots on the canvas we created our spot paintings as a group, finishing this we encountered the problem I was against the idea for. With spots on the canvas being smudged and some of the circles not being round and overall, close up the painting not being done as good as the painting or style of painting we were imitating.

The second part of idea being the exhibition and the guerrilla advertising we chose to take a different route choosing to have our guerrilla campaign on the world’s biggest marketplace ebay labelling the art work as “Original Spot Painting” instantly connecting to the art audience like advertising would and the exhibition being a open, free one at Goldsmiths. Choosing the location of Goldsmiths as that’s were Damien Hirst attended as a student to display the two canvases we did. The positives of my group was the way we worked together and cooperated, organized and designated roles to each group member to get it done. Even though the work wasn’t as good as we thought it would be we defiantly all good agree we enjoyed working together.

From the start of this module I have been engaged in the tasks set and have enjoyed both working with a team and the combination of photography and graphic design that can be conceptually used to respond to briefs. I found working in the groups insightful, as somebody who usually works by himself it has opened my eyes to the possibilities of your work or work being at a higher level if everybody is working and wanting a well worked end result. Coming from a person that studies graphic design but does photography independently I have found it interesting being teamed with the photography students and seeing how they work technically being and playing the role of a keen spectator to the processes of photography, which both became inspiring me to want to create photographic and a want to get better. This being teamed with the lectures from professionals has given me hope that there is a place in the working world for somebody like me with ideas and a want for better. Also as a student seeing the attitude and drive of other students doing this work in their free time has me excited to be in such an competitive work environment like a graphic design agency and how it would be like working in one, Overall having me wanting to pursue a creative career.

With the spontaneous nature of the visiting talks with the only consistency in these lectures being that they somehow related to the audience of the lectures, being Graphic design and Photography students I found the lectures insightful and engag-ing. Especially when the visiting speaker has noth-ing particularly to do with your practice but you find what they say or show inspiring like the Film on artist Brenton “Mr Pink” Pink by visiting speak-er Helena Appio. Which I found enjoyable and thought provoking getting a message of self-confi-dence, self-belief and self love from it even though It didn’t relate to my practise particularly. More particularly relating to my practice the lecture by Sian Cook which what I got from the lecture is the possibilities of yourself specializing in a certain subject matter or skill or feeling passionate about something and how you can go about inserting it into your work ultimately communicating through design. Having creative professionals who work or have worked in the creative field coming into speak to us directly with their job titles varying showed me that one there is a space for everything in the creative industry if you’re willing to work hard.
