What is this industry sector? STATISTICS CANADA DEFINITION

This sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in activities in which human capital is the major input. These establishments make available the knowledge and skills of their employees, often on an assignment basis. The individual industries of this sector are defined on the basis of the particular expertise and training of the service provider.

The distinguishing feature of this sector is the fact that most of the industries grouped in it have production processes that are almost wholly dependent on worker skills. In most of these industries, equipment and materials are not of major importance. Thus, the establishments classified in this sector sell expertise. Much of the expertise requires a university or college education, though not in every case. Establishments primarily engaged in providing instruction and training in a wide variety of subjects and those primarily engaged in providing health care by diagnosis and treatment are not included in this sector.

SECTOR STRUCTURE This sector has only one subsector (3-digit level) so below we show the 4-digit level Industry Groups that will be explored in this report to provide more meaningful information.

In the News Highlights GAINS Nov 3, 2017 Ottawa Business Journal Ottawa second to Toronto as best tech talent market in Canada: report CBRE Ottawa managing director says the conversation in Ottawa is shifting from government to tech. The city has the highest concentration of tech employment in the country, with 10.9 per cent of workers employed in the field. Ottawa gained 6,300 new tech workers in the past five years, but growth has recently been slowing: New labour pool additions have decreased 8.7 per cent between 2014 and 2016. That’s largely due to a sudden dip between 2014 and 2015.

Oct 19, 2017 Ottawa Business Journal Shopify adding up to 500 jobs, second office in Waterloo An additional 300 to 500 jobs over the next three years and a second office in Waterloo. The firm is also hiring in Ottawa, looking to fill 325,000 square feet of space on Laurier Avenue with 2,500 employees.

Mar 30, 2017 Ottawa Citizen Ford, BlackBerry cap six months of secretive dealings with shift of Ottawa tech talent As many as 400 BlackBerry employees have now been hired by Ford. The aim of the skill transfer is to help supercharge the car company’s research and development initiatives. This collaboration has also created a research and development engineering centre for Ford in BlackBerry’s old Kanata offices. The team will focus on mobility and keeping cars connected to one another through wireless communications. Ford promised to invest as much as $500 million in research and development. The move doubles the number of employees that Ford had working on communications and mobility. TRENDS/PROJECTIONS Oct 21, 2017 Ottawa Citizen The IT Factor, Part 2: Will Ottawa have more tech jobs than it can fill? In the Kanata North Business Park alone— once referred to as Silicon Valley North, at the height of the dot-com boom — there are today 3,000 unfilled positions. “Unemployment in tech right now is almost zero,” says Jenna Sudds, the outgoing executive director of the Kanata North Business Association.

Aug 21, 2017 CBC News Help wanted: Ottawa tech companies recruiting to fill thousands of jobs Ottawa technology companies are facing pressure to hire and keep employees as the sector grows and thousands of new positions are expected to be created in the coming years. Invest Ottawa says 10,000 positions to be filled by 2019. The Kanata North BIA said the tech sector in the region has to fill 3,000 positions in the coming months as BlackBerry QNX and Ford hire for the autonomous vehicle hub and existing companies expand.
