The Road Ahead is Open!
“Creativity (in general) is the ability to come up with new ideas that are surprising yet
intelligible, and also valuable in some way” (Boden, 2001)
Creativity?
3 types of Creativity
Combinational
creativity - combining old ideas in new ways.
e.g. Analogy in science
Exploratory creativity - what do the rules enable me to do?
e.g. Jazz music.
Transformational creativity - significant alteration of one or more rules in concept space.
e.g. E=MC2.
Personal Learning Environments
Personal Learning Network
PersonalWeb Tools
PLEs are not only personal web tools and personal learning networks. PLEs
are much wider than this, taking in experiences and realia, as well as learning through TV, music, paper based materials, radio &
more formal contexts.
Learning content is not as important now as where (or who) to connect to, to
find it.
PWTs are any web tools, (usually Web 2.0) chosen
by learners to support their lifelong learning.
Here’s a problem for teachers:
“For the first time we are preparing students for a future we cannot clearly describe.” - David Warlick
Formal and Informal learning

Informal Learning

Is learning simply about gaining knowledge...?
... or about making connections?
Learners enjoy learning when it’s engaging and fun!
The reaction of education systems and institutions to the rise of social networking has been at best bewilderment, at worst downright hostility
a refusal to engage in these issues risks school becoming increasingly irrelevant to the everyday lives of many young people
and particularly irrelevant to the ways in which they communicate and share knowledge
Personal Learning Environments…
Connection
‘The wisdom of crowds’
Social Media use
Social Media gives everyone a
voice in the community
Retweeting is not repetition. It is amplification.
- Steve Wheeler
Web 2.0 allows young people to be active co-creators of knowledge
Most informal learning is learner driven, problem based, or motivated by interest
Google is the most used e-learning application
most learning is unaccredited
The Zone of Proximal Development - the distance between what we know and are able to do now and what we could know and do with the help of a Significantly Knowledgeable Other
Learning is linked to performance in practice
Since we cannot experience everything, other people’s experiences, and hence other people, become the surrogate for knowledge
‘I store my knowledge in my friends’ is an
axiom for collecting knowledge through
collecting people. - Karen Stephenson
Web 1.0: Anything can link to anything
Think Different
Kick start your brain. New ideas come from watching something,
talking to people, experimenting, asking questions, getting out
of the office
- Steve Jobs
