Principal Accountabilities

Professor of Fashion History

The primary responsibilities of the Professor of Fashion History are to:• Show academic leadership in the development of exceptional research in the field of fashion history through leading and mentoring staff in the institute, leading research groups or centres, undertaking projects, bidding for funding, and related activity. • Develop original personal research to a level of academic distinction (as recognised by the REF and elsewhere) and disseminate findings through publication, performance, curated exhibition, or creative activity.• Achieve a substantial amount of externally funded research work, follow research projects to successful completion, engage in consultancy and create inventions/discoveries where relevant.• Maintain successful partnerships with relevant external agencies both nationally and internationally, lead public engagement with research and play a leading role in the strategic development of the Manchester Fashion Institute and the University. • Maintain an appropriate and direct input to learning and teaching within the Fashion Institute

• Play a leading role in the strategic development of the Fashion Institute, the Faculty and the University especially in the field of research.• Utilise external professional networks to provide publishing or exhibiting opportunities for research active staff• Lead the integration of research and academic practice in the Fashion Institute• Develop and mentor academic staff to achieve international quality research outputs• Lead a successful research Group/Centre• Deliver a teaching commitment at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to supervise postgraduate research students and provide academic and pastoral advice to students

Additional Activities

To act as referee and contribute to peer assessment for appropriate journals and bodies.To collaborate with senior academic colleagues on future research development and direction.To represent the Fashion Institute at University and Faculty level on appropriate committees and working groups.To mentor colleagues, especially early career researchers, and provide mutual support to improve the skills available within the University and achieve the successful completion of projects.To assist the Head of Department in the professional development and review of staff.To participate in the recuitment and selection of staff offering academic guidance where necessary.To guide and support research assistants and other members of staff within the department in areas of expertise e.g. in undertaking research and writing papers for publication.

A willingness to travel within the UK and overseas where necessary.

You have a legal duty, so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensure that you do not endanger yourself or anyone else by your acts or omissions. In addition you must cooperate with the University on health and safety.You are expected to co-operate with the PDR process, engaging in the setting of objectives in order to assist in the monitoring of performance and the development of the individual.Such other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Manager in agreement with you. Such agreement should not be unreasonably withheld.
