Atelye 70 Planning & Architects was established in 1970 by Hüseyin Kaptan with his three colleagues (İrfan Bayhan,Refik Şenvardar,Emre Aysu).Since 1982 Hüseyin Kaptan is the chairman of this group. Currently twenty architects, urban planners, interior designers, legal advisors, economists, and sociologists work at Atelye 70.The group’s main working areas are: Urban Planning and Urban Design; Con-servation Plans, Planning of Tourism and Recreational Areas; Housing Projects in developing Metropolitan Areas; Architectural and Interior Design Projects; Preparation of Urban Research and Feasibility Studies and Rural Development Plans in various geographical areas with unique socio-economic and cultural characters.The mission of the group is to respect social, ecological and cultural environ-ment, and to contribute to the creation of livable cities through its urban design, planning and architectural projects which are taking into consideration the human scale.

ACADEMIC WORKS

Since 1977 our chairman Hüseyin Kaptan’s planning efforts and academic studies, concentrate on İstanbul Metropolitan Area. As consultant of Union of Municipalities of Marmara and Bosporus, he participated to union’s international affairs and organizations within the years 1977-83. The proceedings of the Interna-tional Congress on Economic Development and Inter- municipal Cooperation in the Mediterranean areas, (May- 1980, İstanbul) has a significant place in these activities.He also attended many international workshops of OECD and fulfilled an efficient role to influence Turkish urban planning system with international experiences. Along these lines, he realized researches on local administration and planning models in Bristol University School of Advanced Urban Studies in 1982-83. At the same period H. Kaptan played a direct role for the planning of Istanbul Metropolitan Area as Secretary- General of Institute of Settlement Sciences in Yıldız Technical University (YTU).Tuzla – Darıca – Soğanlık urban development plans are important examples of the beginning of this process.Central Business District and Settlement Area Planning of Sisli-Kağıthane and Harem-Gebze Corridor Plan-ning aiming to decentralize industrial employment in metropolitan, area are other significant experiences in this process.Our chairman Hüseyin Kaptan has been enrolled in workshops, organizations and projects listed in below, for Habitat II Conference between the years 1995-97 as the Chairman of Department of City Planning, Yıldız Technical University (YTU).

ISTANBUL METROPOLITAN PLANNING AND URBAN DESIGN CENTRE (IMP)

Our chairman Prof. Hüseyin Kaptan strives for the benefit of society from planning services, more efficiently as the founder and director of Istanbul Metropolitan Planning and Urban Design Centre (IMP) and believes in the development of a participating democratic culture, from the neighborhood to metropolitan scale, as the essence of urban planning. In this period (2004-2008) mainly, Strategic-Environmental Plan of İstanbul Metropolitan area (1/100000) had been achieved and approved by the Main İstanbul Municipality Council. Master Plan (1/25000) was completed and submitted. In the matter of strategic planning, about many regeneration projects that concentrate on ecological, social and economic sustainability.
