WRITING
PERSONAL ESSAYSome students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application wouldbe incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.I'm proud to say that I am a "shoe girl." I know and can openly admit that I think more about my shoe collection then I do aboutthe admission tendencies of a certain university. In my room there are no less than thirty pairs of shoes dating back to my firstNikes that sit bronzed on top of my desk. I have shoes ranging from patent leather tap shoes to neon green Adidas runningshoes. Underneath my bed, in a perfectly straight line, my best and finest shoes are organized my model and color. However, once my A-list shoes get old and torn I am forced to retire them to the back of my dusty closet but I know it is better for both ofus to move on with our lives. Just the other day I was digging through my closet looking for clothes to donate to charity when Icame across my purple suede Nike high top basketball shoes. They were ripped and frayed and I was about to through them inthe pile of "giveaways" when I stopped and considered the night they saved my life.
On a Friday afternoon in my sophomore year, my friends and I went to Paramount's Kinds Island. After a long day of flying upand down on loops, corkscrews, and barrel rolls, we decided to leave as it was getting dark. We began speeding down theempty parking lot towards what we thought was the exit. Then suddenly, the car was flying through the chain-linked fence, straight down twenty feet into a sewage aqueduct. For a moment it felt like we were riding Riddler's Revenge but then hit us;the wall that is. In a state of shock, we managed to climb out of the car. We found ourselves standing in two feet of sewagewater within a twenty foot deep aqueduct. After checking ourselves and each other to make sure nobody was too badly injured,we started analyzing our situation.
We tried, and failed, to climb up the steep walls many times until I noticed that the bottoms of our shoes provided the perfecttread along the concrete walls. I took off my high tops and threw them to my friend, I instructed her to put the shoes on herhands. This way, she has four points at which she can grip the wall (rather than two). She used them like gloves allowing her toeasily climb up the wall like a spider. As she got to the top of the wall she tossed my wet shoes back down to the next person. We kept exchanging shoes until all of us were out. After spending some time in the hospital, I returned home, realized howlucky I was, and slipped off my sewage smelling Nike's and threw them in the closet, an earlier retirement than expected.
I was quick to discard my shoes because they did not have much use for me anymore. Looking now at my old purple Nikeslying defeated in the closet, I wonder if they truly deserve to be there. Was it right for me to banish them to my closet becausethey were a little smelly and torn? What would happen if I were to throw out more important things just because they were alittle banged up?
From my experiences working at Tender Mercies, a local mission, I realized that society has been throwing out more importantthings than shoes. For years we have been tossing human lives into the dark and dusty closet. I can admit that I used to benegligent with respects to the needs in my community, but I feel that I have gained a newfound appreciation for every person insociety.

SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAY – Red Brick University In an essay of no more than 300 words, please answer the prompt, “Why Red Brick?” Since I stepped foot on the campus, I knew that this was the school for me. I want a college that provides opportunities for engaging with faculty inside and outside of the classroom. When I went on tour, a student even said that she had dinner with all of her professors! I also love the school because it allows an opportunity to explore my passion: writing. Having devoted substantial time to my school’s newspaper, I would like to contribute to the school’s student publications. Without a doubt, writers for student newspapers inculcate themselves into the heartbeats of their respective communities. Speaking of contributions, I love to be engaged in campus life whether that entails attending athletic events with my face painted, or joining your university’s Gay-Straight Alliance—I want to be involved. Ultimately, I want to attend Red Brick University because it provides the perfect balance of small academic class sizes with the resources and campus life of a much larger university. Counselor Recommendation for Stephanie Markowitz
Stephanie is a wonderful student, a caring friend to her peers, and a delight to have on campus. She has demonstrated leadership qualities with her involvement in our school newspaper, through the Gay-‐Straight Alliance on-‐campus, and in the classroom. Stephanie has also shown great maturity in balancing her busy school schedule with her work schedule—her parents own a falafel restaurant and Stephanie works considerable hours to help support the family business. She takes great pride in her work and the image she projects in every aspect of her life. On our school newspaper, The Chieftain, Stephanie has grown as a role model in positions of increasing responsibility and is now the Co-‐Editor-‐in-‐Chief. Her articles usually cover sensitive issues fairly and she has garnered the respect of her peers and faculty alike. The enthusiasm and commitment she brings to her position suggests great leadership potential. Stephanie is one of Hillmore’s most mature and conscientious editors and reporters; her concern for editorial excellence and her active pursuit of it serves as a example for her peers and ensures the consistent quality of The Chieftain. She is, without a doubt, an essential member of the production team and I sense that journalism will undoubtedly be a life-‐long part of Stephanie’s learning. Stephanie has taken advantage of Hillmore’s curricular offerings by challenging herself in a variety of honors and AP courses. While math and science may not be her favorite courses, she is tenacious and determined to continue to participate and enrich her overall high school experience by taking classes that challenge her. Her love of foreign language has fueled her desire to enroll in both Latin here at Hillmore and advanced Hebrew courses at the University of Cincinnati. Stephanie Markowitz will positively impact your campus community, just as she has here at Hillmore. She is well prepared to meet and exceed the challenges of college and will be a wonderful addition to any institution. Sincerely, Doug Hammey Guidance Counselor Hillmore High School

Teacher Recommendation for Stephanie Markowitz
In fifteen years of teaching, I have encountered very few students who have Stephanie’s gift for writing. Not only is Stephanie a “natural,” she is a motivated and hardworking student who often can be found burning the midnight oil in the newsroom. Over the course of three years, Stephanie has demonstrated a superb ability to delegate; she demands excellence from her staff writers and photographers. However, she does not micromanage them, but allows them the freedom to explore a story on their own. If they miss their deadline, she isn’t shy about sharing her disappointment.
I never have to encourage Stephanie to explore the many facets of running a successful newspaper. She is always ready and willing to help others with layout, selecting appropriate photographs and advising on “getting the good interview.” She is wonderfully adept at taking experiences from her personal life and bringing them to the paper. I am reminded of the time Stephanie visited Tender Mercies, the local mission, not to represent the Chieftain, but as a volunteer. She was not intent on writing a story, but she was so inspired by the stories of the residents that she returned to write a wonderful three-part piece on homelessness and joblessness in our community.
Stephanie has grown tremendously into her current position as co-editor-in-chief. However, she realizes that there is still much to be learned and will greatly benefit from the program offered at your fine institution. I know that she will positively impact not only your campus community, but your classrooms as well. Please accept my strong recommendation on her behalf.

Interview Notes for Stephanie Markowitz
Stephanie is part first generation American; her mother is Israeli and Hebrew is spoken at home. Her main extra-‐curricular activities have been involvement with the school newspaper and Gay Straight Alliance—clearly passions of hers. However, her participation in Tender Mercies, a local shelter, has had a significant impact upon her. Stephanie is an outgoing and very personable young woman. We spent the entire hour engaged in conversation that ranged from sports to politics (local and global), including the role service plays in her active life. Her Israeli background affords her the opportunity to travel to Israel extensively (nearly every summer). Stephanie has sufficiently challenged herself academically at Hillmore High School. When talking about academics, it is clear that languages are another of Stephanie’s passions. She speaks fluently in Hebrew and is currently learning Latin. (We had a good laugh when I had to dust off my rusty Latin!) She is very interested in the creative writing program at RBU and had some insightful questions about double majoring and study abroad. Stephanie is a great match for RBU. Regards, Oscar Schultz Class of ‘73 GO RED!
