P u n e cam e u n d er the ru le o f Y ad ava’s o f D evgiri (d au latab ad ) in 9 7 3 A .D . In 1294, th is area after th e d efea t o f Raja R am dev, cam e u n d er th e D elh i rule o f th e M oghals. P u n e w a s k n ow n a s K asbe P u n e, th en for a b rief period after 1 34 7 , th e area form ed a part o f B ah am an i em pire. A fter 14 9 0 , th e area form ed th e p art o f N izam sh a h i, h av in g its h ea d q u arters at A hm ednagar. D u rin g th e se c o n d h a lf of th e s ix teen th cen tu ry , B h o sa le ’s b ecam e J a g ir d a r ’s of th e provine in th e first qu arter o f th e se v e n te e n th cen tu ry , S h a h a ji B h o sa le sh iffted h is lo ya lity from N izam to A d ilsh a h of B ijapur. In 1637 Shahaji ap p o in ted D adoji K onddev to look after P u n e an d su rrou n d in g territory T h ou gh S h ivaji c h o se Rajgad an d la ter R aigad, as h is cap ita ls , P u n e rem ain ed th e P rin cip al c en tre o f stra teg ic , p o litica l, d ip lom atic and m ilitary ac tiv ity in th e se c o n d an d th ird quarer of the se v e n te e n th cen tu ry .
The P esh w a rule started in 17 1 3 . D uring th is regim e th e cen tre o f p o litica l activ ity sh ifted from su rro u n d in g forts to P u n e c ity . In 173 0 th e fam ous S h an iw arw ad a w a s c o n stru c te d . D u rin g th e rem ain in g part of the e ig h tee n th cen tu ry , P une rem ain ed th e ca p ita l o f P esh w as. In 1818, B ritish forces o ccu p ied P une an d th a t w as th e end of P esh w a rule in W estern India.
