Special. Vibrant. Community. That is what this special section, Profiles in Community, is all about. Each individual and each business, institution or profes- sional has a role to play that’s unique. Each is special. And through each of our efforts, we create a vibrant community. This section takes a few moments out of our busy days to reflect on the importance of working together to make our towns, county and state a great place to live and work, and to recognize that one of the joys of living in small towns is getting to know one another, and the sense that we are all part of a greater whole. In our daily interactions we greet each other in many differ- ent settings: as cutomer and retailer, client and professional, neighbor and friend. Sometimes it’s an impromptu chat on Main Street or at a school function; sometimes it’s a lively exchange at town meeting; sometimes it’s just a friendly wave or a nod at the post office or in a store. It’s a common interaction, often overlooked, but it makes living here more personal, more intimate, more rewarding. That’s the root of this special section. For the past 28 years, we have published it (formerly called Meet Your Business & Professional Community) to help our readers know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this year’s section, we visit more than 175 area businesses to snap their photos, introduce their teams and tell their unique stories. While the stories vary widely, the focus within each story serves as a tribute to the hard-working employees and employers who make each business the success that it is. We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reacquaint yourself with the businesses — and the names of the employees — in this year’s Profiles in Community, a change in name that broadens the scope to include institu- tions, non-profits, organizations and the many other entities throughout the county that enrich our lives. Our close-knit communities have much to offer, not only in products and services, but also in the smiles of those who greet us each day and the thanks we offer in return. Unique. Special. Vibrant.Community. That is what this special section, Profiles in Community,

is all about. Each individual and each business, institution or profes-

sional has a role to play that’s unique.

In our daily interactions we greet each other in many differ-ent settings: as cutomer and retailer, client and professional, neighbor and friend.

For the past 28 years, we have published it (formerly called

Meet Your Business & Professional Community) to help our readers know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this year’s section, we visit more than 175 area businesses to snap their photos, introduce their teams and tell their unique stories. While the stories vary widely, the focus within each story serves as a tribute to the hard-working employees and employers who make each business the success that it is.

We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reacquaint yourself with the businesses — and the names of the employees — in this year’s Profiles in Community, a change in name that broadens the scope to include institu-tions, non-profits, organizations and the many other entities throughout the county that enrich our lives.

Our close-knit communities have much to offer, not only in products and services, but also in the smiles of those who greet us each day and the thanks we offer in return.

Celebrating 68 years of covering Addison County! How do the numbers 5,000, 103, 68, and 1946 go together? Simple.

Since 1946, the Addison Independent has been proud to bring the best community news coverage to the residents of Addison County for the past 68 years. Today, we publish 103 issues each year (we skip one Monday issue after Christmas), generating about 5,000 pages of local news each year Ñ all news that matters to YOU!

MISSION REFLECTS OUR FOCUS ON QUALITYOur mission is to report the day-to-day events of the county, capturing the county’s weekly life with words and photos to serve as a mirror to reflect life as it’s being lived, and to shine light on the issues that need illuminating.

We firmly believe that quality content is worth the expense and effort, and that the high quality of our reporting, photography, advertising, customer service, and the thoroughness of event coverage is what will continue to set us apart from the competition. We strive to be the best we can be for our customers and readers.

COME VISIT US DIGITALLY!We’ve been on the web for more than a decade and our website has won state and New England awards for its excellence! Why? Because we put the same energy and effort into making it a useful resources as we do our print editions. You can view the entire paper via flip-page function (seeing the actual pages and advertising just as it appears in the print edition), or view the news of the day online with featured news, sports, community events and activities and commentary. Online, we also feature slide shows, local videos and an expanded number of photos that we didn’t have room for in the newspaper. It’s mostly a paid site, but well worth the extra $10 a year when added to the print edition.

It’s exciting, fun and up-to-date — with breaking news featured there first when it happens.

Mobile Middlebury App!We also have an app. Have had for two years. It’s called Mobile Middlebury and it’s improving day-by-day with new announcements coming soon (Tip: with Route 802, we’ve partnered with the state tourism department and area chambers of commerce and are getting more traffic by the day! But more about that later.)By pairing the digital world with the strength of our local newspaper, we’re set to deliver the most up-to-date news in print, online and via your smart phones. That’s good for the community, our advertisers and keeps the Addison Independent healthy and vibrant.

WeÕ re excited about our future prospects and eager to share our expertise in all things local with you, your family and friends. Stay in touch; we will too.

THE TRADITION OF COMMUNITYAs we have for the past 68 years, we invite you to join us each week — to learn about your community, about your neighbors, your schools, area businesses, local students, the sports teams and other extracurricular activities and to read the hundreds of feature stories about area residents that are told throughout the year. It’s a fascinating trip and one that keeps getting better and better the more you know about your community.

Thanks for your loyal support, and your continued involvement in your hometowns. It’s your involvement that often drives the news and makes Addison County a wonderful place to work and play.

We now accept EBT cardsEXPERIENCE MIDDLEBURY IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BETTER MIDDLEBURY PARTNERSHIP

Experience MiddleburyThis year, the Better Middlebury Partnerhip invested in the design and creation of a new website, experiencemiddlebury.com, which showcases the many Middlebury assets all in one place. In addition to upgrading Middlebury’s online presence and providing a member business directory, events calendar and other exciting resources to locals and visitors, the site also serves to recruit businesses and mobile professionals to our area by proving that it is possible to have a successful career and live a life of balance in Middlebury.

The BMP’s four signature events, the Vermont Chili Fest, Midd Summer Fest, Spooktacular and Very Merry Middlebury work throughout the year to encourage locals as well as tourists to experience Middlebury and all it has to offer.

This has been an incredible year of achievements for the Better Middlebury Partnership and the town of Middlebury. Thank you to the BMP board, as well as the hundreds of volunteers who have helped make the BMP events successful. We have collectively attracted over 11,000 people to Middlebury this year. We are grateful to all of our members and sustaining partners for their continued support, which helped to make our work in the community possible.

Finally, thank you to all of the people who have participated in BMP initiatives this year; at the signature events, telecommuter and young professional gatherings, public meetings and talks, or by filling out a survey about your shopping habits. Your investment of time and energy into our community is what makes Middlebury a better place to live, work and play. We look forward to continuing that work with you in the coming year!

HISTORY OF G. STONE MOTORS, INC.

G. Stone Motors, Inc,. started 40 years ago as a local used car and truck dealership. Gardner Stoneborrowed every dime he could to buy four used cars and the little place that is now Speedi-Lube.

In the early 2000’s, Gardner wanted to offer something new and began G.Stone Commercial Division. The Commercial Division offers a new model for the rental of commercial construction equipment, heavy hauling and trailers.

In 2012, Todd and Darcy Stone opened the G.Stone Make It Shine custom detailing shop. Beginning as the detailing shop for the other businesses, Todd and Darcy opened it for commercial use.

Mainly MetalsProfiles:

By WEYLAND JOYNERBRISTOL — David Durgin is a

busy man.The Bristol resident owns Mainly

Metals, a machine and fabrication shop that uses a unique water jet technology to cut materials of all sorts.

“It’s a jet of water with garnet mixed in,” Durgin explains. “The jet is about 1/30,000 of an inch in diameter — the size of a mechanical pencil lead — that comes out around 50,000 pounds per square inch.”

What that adds up to is one ex-tremely precise machine.

“The technology was around in the ’50s, but they just didn’t have sophisticated enough software to use it the way we do,” Durgin says.

Now, most of Durgin’s jobs come over email in the form of CAD (computer-aided design) files. The specifications are plugged into a computer that guides the automated hydro jet.

Durgin, who founded Mainly Metals in 1986, got his start work-ing with sheet metal and traditional metal-cutting tools, making products like chimney lining connectors, “ba-sically doing stuff other people didn’t want to,” he says with a laugh.

But with the acquisi-tion in 2003 of a water jet from the Washington state company OMAX, his range of production expanded dramatically. In addition to metal, the machine can cut stone, wood, foam — you name it.

There is no typical customer, but recent projects include violin chin rests, foam tool organizers, tools for jewelers, and a photo lens cut entire-ly in half for a display. Durgin did a project for MIT graduate students, presented for the Swedish Consul-ate, cutting and layering sheets of polycarbonate to simulate a cloud.

A walk around Durgin’s Hewitt Street facilities makes it clear that

he is a natural problem-solver. His shop, in the basement of his house, is geothermally heated and cooled and features custom-fabricated tracks for the jet’s arm.

In the backyard is a hydroponic/aquaponic grow operation housed in a shed Durgin built of 6-inch Styrofoam wall modules.

“It’s a closed sys-tem,” Durgin explains, demonstrating how ammonia produced by the waste from a tank of tilapia is turned into nitrates by naturally oc-curring bacteria. The nitrates fertilize a hy-droponic bed of Swiss chard, kale and lettuce.

The vegetables, in turn, purify the water for reuse in the fish tank.

“The plants grow 25-30 percent faster than they would outside, and there’s no bugs,” Durgin says.

The shed is heated geothermally and powered by an 8.4-kilowatt solar panel array. The main power draw is the LED grow lights, mount-ed on moving tracks.

Naturally, Durgin made most of the shed’s hardware with the water

jet.Durgin also has a number of high-

ly modified boats in his backyard. He designed and fabricated an elab-orate pontoon system for his fishing canoe, and he is in the process of gutting a 22-foot Starcraft, installing a variety of custom modifications.

Back in the shop, Durgin explains his business model.

“We’re a job shop,” he says, “we do work for other people. So we don’t really produce any of our own stuff. I think it’s better that way.”

“I definitely don’t think of this as a retail business,” he adds.

Any time Durgin considers in-vesting in new equipment or a new process, he researches the subject thoroughly. He spent two years con-sidering the pros and cons of the water jet machine before he bought one.

Durgin says learning to use the machine’s software was easy enough.

“You learn as you go … there’s a lot of trial and error.”

His secret to success?“Well, we get a lot of jobs that

were turned down by people with the same equipment. They didn’t think they could do it. It’s all about the thought process.”

In continuous operation in Middlebury since 1949, The Vermont Book Shop is an institution. We, its stewards, are devoted to providing excellent customer service, promoting interpersonal engagement around books, and giving back to the community that supports us.

BECKY bought the Vermont Book Shop in 2005 and has sustained and enhanced it in numerous capacities. Her commitment is to maintaining a great bookstore in Middlebury and contributing to a vibrant downtown economy.

GRANT joined the Vermont Book Shop in 1975 as a bookseller for founder Dike Blair. He has remained through two subsequent owners and, as our book buyer, is the bedrock of the operation.

JENNY, a native Vermonter returning from stints in Salt Lake City, Utah and Vero Beach, Florida, has just joined VBS as marketing and sales manager. She is an experienced bookseller, avid reader, telemark skier, and mom. We are delighted to have her on our team and know you will be too.

& SONS by David Gilbert (Middlebury College ‘90) I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a Salinger-esque author and his three estranged sons as sharedthrough the eyes of a young family friend. Gilbert writes beautifully about the universal power of the filial bond, and sensitively about a specific class of New Yorkers’ captivating lives.

Skylar has committed more time to his executive teambuilding work, but is still very much a part of our team of booksellers and a critical cog in our machinery. He’s a lifetime customer of the shop, a great reader and a good friend.

AMY has two kids and is a fantastic reader and recommender of children’s books. In addition to working in the shop, she is on the UD3 school board and runs Bonnie’s Book Foundation, which provides new and gently used books to children who may not own books at home.

CAROL is an essential member of our team, receiving and tracking nearly every book that comes down the Main St. chute and also maintaining our small but extraordinary music selection.

MEADOW our newest bookseller comes to us from that big box bookstore on Dorset Street and is glad to work in the more humane environment VBS and its loyal customers represent. She is an enthusiastic reader of fantasy, talented craftsmaker, hobby farmer and stepmom.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr is a novel of two young people, Marie-Laure, a young blind girl in Paris, and German orphan Werner, who are both caught up in the terrible tide of  World War II.  Doerr’s writing is a pleasure to read. Chapters alternate between the worlds of both children who are each swept in the cruelty of war and the humanity that endures despite it.

MY WISH LIST by Gregoire Delacourt (Penguin). This story traces the path of Jocelyne’s life after she wins the lottery. She begins to compose her Wish List. What will she do with the money? Among her choices – keeping the news to herself, not telling her husband. Will she even cash the check? Delacourt’s descriptions of Jocelyne’s fabric shop in a small town in France are so beguiling, the reader wants her life to remain unchanged; but the lottery win has set things in motion, and the results are unexpected. A lovely gem of a book.

BETSY SPANNBAUER Healing Touch Therapy Practioner

Healing Touch is a therapy that helps restore and balance energy that has been depleted due to stress, illness, injury, grief, medical conditions, surgery or medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. When an individual has pain, the practioner focuses on removing the energy congestion so that the pain level is reduced. Think of times when you have been stressed and how it affected your body. You may have experienced muscle tightness in your neck and shoulders, developed a headache or had discomfort in other parts of your body. Stress causes congestion in our energy system. Healing Touch techniques help to relieve that congestion.

Foot reflexology, developed in ancient times, is now used as a non-invasive healing therapy. It is based on the knowledge that there are reflexes in the feet, which correspond to every organ, gland, and each part of the body. Therapeutically applying pressure with the fingers and thumbs to particular points in the feet serves to relax tension, relieve stress, improve circulation, balance energy, and restore the natural functioning of the related areas in the body.

Hour long sessions will include a soothing footbath, the application of reflexology techniques, and a gentle foot message.

Sally has had a private practice in Massage Therapy for 28 years. She is an AMTA certified Massage Therapist and has been a certified Zero Balanc-ing Practitioner since 1996. She has studied extensively in the field of Cranio-sacral Therapy since 1990 and graduated from a two year program in Bio-dynamic Craniosacral Therapy in 2009. Thus she can draw on a variety of modalities to meet the needs of each client. Sally has worked in collaboration with a variety of health care professionals and has experience working with children and adults. A 1966 graduate of Middlebury College, Sally has a Mas-ter’s Degree in Education.

Craniosacral Therapy is a holistic practice that uses very light touch to balance the craniosacral system in your body which includes the bones, nerves, fluids and connective tissues of the cranium, spine and sacrum. The focus is on careful listening to the subtle forces of health within your body. For additional information see www.energyschool.com and www.upledger.com.

Zero Balancing (ZB) is a hands-on body work system designed to align the energy body with your physi-cal structure. The practitioner uses finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissue to create fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorga-nize. For additional information see www.zerobalancing.com.

Sessions are done with the client fully clothed, comfortably lying on a massage table. Sally tailors each session to the needs of the individual focusing on the whole person while addressing specific needs. Benefits include reducing physical and emotional pain, relieving musculoskeletal tension and enhancing wellness.

Northlands Job CorpsProfiles:

NORTHLANDS JOB CORPS • VERGENNES

By MARY LANGWORTHYVERGENNES — Northlands Job

Corps in Vergennes has long been both a significant employer and an educational resource for Addison County residents. This year has been an important one for strengthening the school’s community connec-tion, said Ron Dedrick, the business community liaison and work-based learning coordinator at Job Corps.

Dedrick said he joined the team this year, with the goal of “trying to re-integrate (Job Corps) into the lo-cal community.”

Job Corps is a national program run by the U.S. Department of La-bor that was started 50 years ago as a means of combating poverty. North-lands Job Corps in Vergennes is one of 125 such government-owned locations, where income-eligible young people, age 16-24, have the opportunity to learn a trade for free. The centers are run by independent contractors; Northlands is managed by CHP International and overseen by the Boston Regional Office of Job Corps. Tony Staynings is center director in Vergennes.

Upon arrival, students begin the “career preparation phase,” where they practice the skills transferrable across all trades, including so-called “soft skills,” such as how to interact with coworkers, and becoming CPR certified.

Job Corps also offers students the unique opportunity to test-drive careers. There is instruction in nine trades offered at Northlands —auto technology, collision repair, busi-ness technology, certified medical assistant, culinary arts, carpentry, facilities maintenance, welding and urban forestry. At the end of the ca-reer preparation phase, students get to visit three different departments to shadow students and ask questions in order find the best fit for them.

In the job market, “a lot of people get thrown in, chewed up, and spit back out,” said George McKenzie, the student government president at Northlands. Job Corps’ training in

both soft and hard skills helps stu-dents succeed in the workplace after graduation, McKenzie said.

McKenzie, a native of Newark, N.J., has been a student at Job Corps since January. He said he is study-ing automotive technology because he hopes that this skill set will offer him some job security in a world de-pendent on cars. He is also an active student leader on campus; as stu-dent government president he has helped make Job Corps’ prom at the Vergennes Opera House a success.

“It’s been a great experience for me so far,” McKenzie said of his time in Vergennes.

The Job Corps program receives praise from faculty, too.

“The thing I like about the pro-gram is the options that students

have,” said Jim Blanchard, a weld-ing instructor at Northlands. “It gives students a great advantage.”

Blanchard brings 40 years of pro-fessional welding experience to the job, and is one of approximately 120 employees at Northlands Job Corps.

Another strength of Job Corps, said Blanchard, is that “we align our students going out into the in-dustry with employers.”

Blanchard listed numerous in-stitutions of higher education or job sites where Job Corps gradu-ates have moved on to, including a diesel training facility in Utah, a welding facility in New Jersey, and technical jobs everywhere from the Champlain Ferries to the far reach-es of the country.

In addition to being an educa-tional resource, Job Corps also benefits the Addison County com-munity through its role as an em-ployer, said Dedrick. In addition to its large workforce, maintenance to the buildings and infrastructure supports local contractors.

Job Corps students frequently volunteer in the community as well, said Dedrick. Students in the culinary program spent the week-end of June 21 preparing food for the city’s junior fishing derby. Urban forestry students maintain several area cemeteries. Across all programs, Job Corps students volunteer at the Vergennes Opera House.

“We try to reinforce hard work and volunteerism. There’s a lot go-ing on here, and unfortunately that doesn’t all filter out to the com-munity. We’re trying to build that information flow,” said Dedrick.

Other goals for the upcoming years include increasing the num-ber of Vermont students at Job Corps, strengthening connections with area high schools, and col-laborating with local businesses to help students receive real-world training, according to Dedrick.

“Students come out of here pretty well rounded,” Dedrick concluded.

Emily Mahar Cannon, ND, PCSafe and Effective Natural MedicineTo be truly holistic, I believe a physician must listen carefully to the patient’s whole story and incorporate their priorities, values and intentions in the development of their treament plan. I have found that natural medicine works best when we carefully individualize treatments and give our patients the knowledge, support and encouragement needed to follow through. I truly enjoy sharing with my patients our understanding of the body, health and all the various medicines that we use here; and helping the patient make an active commitment to walk the path of health and healing.
