Course Objectives : 1. To enable the students to understand the basic principles of family law for non-Muslims in Malaysia.

2. To enable the students to know the position of law, rights and responsibilities of husband, wife and children in a family institution.

3. To enable the students to understand the governing statutory provisions and related decided cases relating to family law.

Learning Outcomes : At the end of the course, students are able to :1. Explain the basic principles of validity of marriage,

nullity and dissolution of marriage and ancillary claims for non- Muslims. (C2,P2,A3,EM)

2. Explain the formalities of marriage and procedures of divorce.(C2,P2,A3,EM,LL)

3. Apply appropriate principles of family law in solving family disputes.(C3,P3,A3,EM,LL)

4. Analyse the rights and obligations arising out of marriage. (C4,P3,A3,EM,LL)

Course Synopsis : The course studies the law applicable to non- Muslim marriages in Malaysia. Topics include betrothal and breach of promise to marry, customary marriages, inter-religious marriage, solemnization and registration of marriage, effect of marriage on status and property, void and voidable marriages, custody, maintenance, legitimacy and adoption.
