REGULATIONS FOR THE MODULAR PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF BSc IN PHYSICS
1 GENERAL
These regulations shall be read in conjunction with and conform to the Senate
Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study. 2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A candidate must satisfy the appropriate Head of Department that the necessary
academic standard has been achieved to enable him/her to commence study on BSc Physics and in addition shall be required:
(1) to have reached a minimum age of 17 years on 1 October of the year of entry
to the programme; AND
(2) to have obtained a GCSE/GCE O Level pass in the following subjects at Grade
C or above:
English Language AND
(3) to have obtained:
(a) A General Certificate of Education with passes at Advanced Level in
the following subjects:
Mathematics Physics OR
(b) A General Certificate of Education with passes at Advanced Level in
Mathematics or Physics and passes at AS Level in at least two other subjects. A Mathematics or Physics AS will be considered as an alternative to a full GCE A Level; OR
(c) A BTEC National Certificate or National Diploma in an approved
subject which has been passed at a sufficiently high standard; OR
(d) A General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) at Level 3
which has been passed in appropriate subjects at a sufficiently high standard; OR
(e) Other qualifications which may be considered equivalent to (a), (b), (c)
or (d).

3 STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
3.1 Full-Time Programme of Study
The programme shall extend for three sessions and shall comprise six
semesters.
4 TIME LIMIT The time limit for completion of the programme, excluding any periods of study in
respect of the Foundation/Preliminary Year shall be in accordance with federal University requirements.
5 PROGRAMME OF STUDY The Programme of Study shall comprise the modules detailed in the relevant Module
Timetable which shall be deemed to form part of these regulations. 6 ASSESSMENT 6.1 Assessment shall be conducted in accordance with the relevant federal
University of Wales Regulations and Standing Orders and the Cardiff University Senate Regulations.
6.2 The method of assessment for each module shall be determined by the
Departmental Board upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies and shall be specified in the Module Description.
7 PROGRESSION
7.1 Full-Time Programme of Study
YEAR ONE
7.1.1 At the end of Year One, the Examining Board shall consider the
progress of each student in each module pursued during the Autumn and Spring Semesters in accordance with Senate Regulations and shall determine whether he/she:
(i) has obtained a minimum of 100 credits at Level One or higher
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of the programme;
(ii) has obtained a minimum of 100 credits at Level One or higher
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of the programme notwithstanding that he/she must during that next academic stage retrieve failure in one or more modules at Level One, the total value of which shall not exceed 20 credits nor require the student to exceed the maximum number of assessable modules specified in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study;
(iii) has not obtained sufficient credits to proceed to the next
academic stage of the programme but has obtained a minimum

of 60 credits at Level One and shall be permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed module assessments prior to the commencement of the next academic session;
(iv) is not eligible to proceed to the next academic stage of the
programme but may be granted the opportunity to retrieve the
failed module(s) in accordance with the provisions the Senate
Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study.
7.12 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed
module assessments prior to the commencement of the second academic year, the Examining Board shall meet to consider the performance of each student in these assessments in accordance with Senate Regulations for modular programmes of study and shall determine the status of the student in accordance with 7.1.1 (i), (ii) or (iv) above.
YEAR TWO
7.1.3 At the end of Year Two, the Examining Board shall consider the
progress of each student in each module pursued during the Autumn and Spring Semesters in accordance with Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall determine whether he/she:
(i) has obtained at least 220 credits, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; and - a minimum of 100 at Level Two or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme;
(ii) has obtained at least 220 credits, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; and - a minimum of 100 credits at Level Two or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme notwithstanding that he/she must during that next academic stage retrieve failure in one or more modules at Level Two or higher, the total value of which shall not exceed 20 credits nor require the student to exceed the maximum number of assessable modules specified in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study;
(iii) is not eligible to proceed to the next academic stage of the
programme but may be granted the opportunity to retrieve the
failed module(s) in accordance with the provisions of the
Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of
Study.

7.1.4 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed module assessments prior to the commencement of the third academic year, the Examining Board shall meet to consider the performance of each student in these assessments in accordance with Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall determine the status of the student in accordance with 7.1.3 (i) or (ii) above.
8 AWARD OF DEGREE
8.1 In order to be considered for the award of an honours degree, a student shall be
required to have satisfied the criteria detailed in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study.
8.2 The classification of degree shall be determined by the Examining Board
meeting at the end of the Spring Semester in the final session of the programme.
8.3 The classification shall be determined in accordance with the procedures
described in of Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall be based upon the performance of each student in the modules specified in the Module Timetable and in accordance with the weightings indicated below:

8.4 The final degree classification for each student shall be determined by the
Examining Board by applying the students overall result, which is calculated in accordance with the weightings described above, to the University-wide scale detailed in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study.
8.5 A student who fails to qualify for the award of an honours degree or a pass
degree shall be dealt with in accordance with Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study.

1 GENERAL
These regulations shall be read in conjunction with and conform to the Senate
Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study. 2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A candidate must satisfy the appropriate Head of Department that the necessary
academic standard has been achieved to enable him/her to commence study on MPhys Physics and in addition shall be required:
(1) to have reached a minimum age of 17 years on 1 October of the year of entry

7.12 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed

YEAR TWO

(i) has obtained at least 220 credits, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; and - a minimum of 100 at Level Two or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme;
(ii) has obtained at least 220 credits, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; and - a minimum of 100 credits at Level Two or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme notwithstanding that he/she must during that next academic stage retrieve failure in one or more modules at Level Two or higher, the total value of which shall not exceed 20 credits nor require the student to exceed the maximum number of assessable modules specified in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study;
(iii) is not eligible to proceed to the next academic stage of the
programme but may be granted the opportunity to retrieve the

7.1.4 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed module assessments prior to the commencement of the third academic year, the Examining Board shall meet to consider the performance of each student in these assessments in accordance with Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall determine the status of the student in accordance with 7.1.3 (i) or (ii) above.
YEAR THREE
7.1.5 At the end of Year Three, the Examining Board shall consider the
progress of each student in each module pursued during the Autumn and Spring Semesters in accordance with Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall determine whether he/she:
(i) has obtained at least 340, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; - a minimum of 120 credits at Level Two or higher; and - a minimum of 100 credits at Level Three or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme;
(ii) has obtained at least 340 credits, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; - a minimum of 120 credits at Level Two or higher; and - a minimum of 100 credits at Level Three or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme notwithstanding that he/she must during that next academic stage retrieve failure in one or more modules at Level Three, the total value of which shall not exceed 20 credits nor require the student to exceed the maximum number of assessable modules specified in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study;
(iii) is not eligible to proceed to the next academic stage of the
programme but may be granted the opportunity to retrieve the
failed module(s) in accordance with the provisions of the
Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Degrees.
7.1.6 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed
module assessments prior to the commencement of the fourth academic
year, the Examining Board shall meet again to consider the
performance of each student in these assessments in accordance with
Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study
and shall determine the status of the student in accordance with 7.1.5
(i) or (ii) above.

8 AWARD OF DEGREE

8.2 The classification of degree shall be determined by the Examining Board
meeting at the end of the Spring Semester in the final session of the programme.
8.3 The classification shall be determined in accordance with the procedures
described in of Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall be based upon the performance of each student in the modules specified in the Module Timetable and in accordance with the weightings indicated below:

REGULATIONS FOR THE MODULAR PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF BSc IN PHYSICS WITH ASTRONOMY
1 GENERAL
These regulations shall be read in conjunction with and conform to the Senate
Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study. 2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A candidate must satisfy the appropriate Head of Department that the necessary
academic standard has been achieved to enable him/her to commence study on BSc Physics with Astronomy and in addition shall be required:
(1) to have reached a minimum age of 17 years on 1 October of the year of entry
to the programme; AND
(2) to have obtained a GCSE/GCE O Level pass in the following subjects at Grade
C or above:
English Language AND
(3) to have obtained:
(a) A General Certificate of Education with passes at Advanced Level in
the following subjects:
Mathematics Physics OR
(b) A General Certificate of Education with passes at Advanced Level in
Mathematics or Physics and passes at AS Level in at least two other subjects. A Mathematics or Physics AS will be considered as an alternative to a full GCE A Level; OR
(c) A BTEC National Certificate or National Diploma in an approved
subject which has been passed at a sufficiently high standard; OR
(d) A General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) at Level 3
which has been passed in appropriate subjects at a sufficiently high standard; OR

3 STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
3.1 Full-Time Programme of Study
The programme shall extend for three sessions and shall comprise six
semesters.
4 TIME LIMIT The time limit for completion of the programme, excluding any periods of study in
respect of the Foundation/Preliminary Year shall be in accordance with federal University requirements.
5 PROGRAMME OF STUDY The Programme of Study shall comprise the modules detailed in the relevant Module
Timetable which shall be deemed to form part of these regulations. 6 ASSESSMENT 6.1 Assessment shall be conducted in accordance with the relevant federal
University of Wales Regulations and Standing Orders and the Cardiff University Senate Regulations.
6.2 The method of assessment for each module shall be determined by the
Departmental Board upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies and shall be specified in the Module Description.
7 PROGRESSION
7.1 Full-Time Programme of Study
YEAR ONE
7.1.1 At the end of Year One, the Examining Board shall consider the
progress of each student in each module pursued during the Autumn and Spring Semesters in accordance with Senate Regulations and shall determine whether he/she:

3 STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
3.1 Full-Time Programme of Study
The programme shall extend for three sessions and shall comprise six
semesters.
4 TIME LIMIT The time limit for completion of the programme, excluding any periods of study in
respect of the Foundation/Preliminary Year shall be in accordance with federal University requirements.
5 PROGRAMME OF STUDY The Programme of Study shall comprise the modules detailed in the relevant Module
Timetable which shall be deemed to form part of these regulations. 6 ASSESSMENT 6.1 Assessment shall be conducted in accordance with the relevant federal
University of Wales Regulations and Standing Orders and the Cardiff University Senate Regulations.
6.2 The method of assessment for each module shall be determined by the
Departmental Board upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies and shall be specified in the Module Description.
7 PROGRESSION
7.1 Full-Time Programme of Study
YEAR ONE
7.1.1 At the end of Year One, the Examining Board shall consider the
progress of each student in each module pursued during the Autumn and Spring Semesters in accordance with Senate Regulations and shall determine whether he/she:
(i) has obtained a minimum of 100 credits at Level One or higher
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of the programme;
(ii) has obtained a minimum of 100 credits at Level One or higher
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of the programme notwithstanding that he/she must during that next academic stage retrieve failure in one or more modules at Level One, the total value of which shall not exceed 20 credits nor require the student to exceed the maximum number of assessable modules specified in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study;
(iii) has not obtained sufficient credits to proceed to the next
academic stage of the programme but has obtained a minimum

of 60 credits at Level One and shall be permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed module assessments prior to the commencement of the next academic session;

Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study.
7.12 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed
module assessments prior to the commencement of the second academic year, the Examining Board shall meet to consider the performance of each student in these assessments in accordance with Senate Regulations for modular programmes of study and shall determine the status of the student in accordance with 7.1.1 (i), (ii) or (iv) above.
YEAR TWO
7.1.3 At the end of Year Two, the Examining Board shall consider the

7.1.5 At the end of Year Three, the Examining Board shall consider the
progress of each student in each module pursued during the Autumn and Spring Semesters in accordance with Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall determine whether he/she:
(i) has obtained at least 340, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; - a minimum of 120 credits at Level Two or higher; and - a minimum of 100 credits at Level S;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme;
(ii) has obtained at least 340 credits, including the following:
- a minimum of 120 credits at Level One or higher; - a minimum of 120 credits at Level Two or higher; and - a minimum of 100 credits at Level S or higher;
and shall be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of
the programme notwithstanding that he/she must during that next academic stage retrieve failure in one or more modules at Level S, the total value of which shall not exceed 20 credits nor require the student to exceed the maximum number of assessable modules specified in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study;
(iii) is not eligible to proceed to the next academic stage of the
programme but may be granted the opportunity to retrieve the
failed module(s) in accordance with the provisions of the
Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Degrees.
7.1.6 Where a student is permitted to attempt to retrieve one or more failed
module assessments prior to the commencement of the fourth academic
year, the Examining Board shall meet again to consider the
performance of each student in these assessments in accordance with
Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study
and shall determine the status of the student in accordance with 7.1.5
(i) or (ii) above.

8 AWARD OF DEGREE
8.1 In order to be considered for the award of an honours degree, a student shall be
required to have satisfied the criteria detailed in Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study.
8.2 The classification of degree shall be determined by the Examining Board
meeting at the end of the Spring Semester in the final session of the programme.
8.3 The classification shall be determined in accordance with the procedures
described in of Senate Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study and shall be based upon the performance of each student in the modules specified in the Module Timetable and in accordance with the weightings indicated below:

8.4 The final degree classification for each student shall be determined by the

REGULATIONS FOR THE MODULAR PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF BSc IN JOINT HONOURS CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS
1 GENERAL
These regulations shall be read in conjunction with and conform to the Senate
Regulations for Modular Undergraduate Programmes of Study. 2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A candidate must satisfy the appropriate Head of Department that the necessary
academic standard has been achieved to enable him/her to commence study on BSc Joint Honours Chemistry and Physics and in addition shall be required:
(1) to have reached a minimum age of 17 years on 1 October of the year of entry
to the programme; AND
(2) to have obtained a GCSE/GCE O Level pass in the following subjects at Grade
C or above:
English Language AND
(3) to have obtained:
(a) A General Certificate of Education with passes at Advanced Level in
the following subjects:
Chemistry Mathematics Physics OR
(b) A BTEC National Certificate or National Diploma in an approved
subject which has been passed at a sufficiently high standard; OR
(c) A General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) at Level 3
which has been passed in appropriate subjects at a sufficiently high standard; OR
(d) Other qualifications which may be considered equivalent to (a), (b) or
(c).

3 STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

4 TIME LIMIT The time limit for completion of the programme, excluding any periods of study in
respect of the Foundation/Preliminary Year shall be in accordance with federal University requirements.
5 PROGRAMME OF STUDY The Programme of Study shall comprise the modules detailed in the relevant Module
Timetable which shall be deemed to form part of these regulations. 6 ASSESSMENT 6.1 Assessment shall be conducted in accordance with the relevant federal
University of Wales Regulations and Standing Orders and the Cardiff University Senate Regulations.
6.2 The method of assessment for each module shall be determined by the
Departmental Board upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies and shall be specified in the Module Description.
7 PROGRESSION
