  • Welcome to today’s performance of the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra. As I celebrate my 10th year with this group of talented musicians, it is gratifying to refl ect upon the remarkable growth the Orchestra has achieved over the years. The dedication and diligence of each member is evident in

the ever improving level of artistry displayed in each performance. The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra’s 2008/2009 season off ers a dynamic array of music selections from traditional works to new favorites. The entire family will enjoy performances such as Rimski-Korsakov’s lush Scheherazade; Prokofi ev’s Peter and the Wolf (narrated King FM “Classic Kids’ announcer, Marta Zekan); Tchaikovsky’s rousing Capriccio Italien; and a host of popular music included on our Holiday Pops concert in December and our Music Around the World Pops concert in June. Be sure to visit our web-site at www.sammamishsymphony.org for a complete listing of works presented this season.

Now, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the concert!

    Program Notes

Welcome to our musical trip around the world. Our excursion lasts just an aft ernoon, but we will cover a lot of ground – geographically and musically.

Our tour opens appropriately with Around the World in 80 Days. This overture introduced the 1956 movie based on Jules Verne’s book of the same name and earned Hollywood composer Victor Young an Oscar® for best music. The adventure fi lm starred David Niven and took his character around the world by train, ship, and hot air balloon.

Like the movie characters, we too will get an overview of the world. Here is your tour guide to some of our musical stopovers.

    • In Spring Festival Overture, Li Huan Chi recalls in music his joyous experience during lunar New Year celebrations in Yen’an, where he fi rst arrived in the summer of 1938. It’s a lively depiction of the festivities celebrated by people living in China’s northern Shaanxi province.

    • Carmen Dragon, orchestrator extraordinaire of Jamaican Rumba, Mexican Hat Dance (Jarabe Tapatio), and Lady of Spain, has been called the complete musician for his accomplishments as composer, arranger, conductor (most notably as music director of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony), radio and television personality, and music educator.

    • Variations on a Korean Folk Song consists of a set of variations on the Korean folk song Arirang, which composer John Barnes Chance heard while in Korea with the U.S. Army in the late 1950s.

    • French composer and conductor, Maurice Jarre, is best known for his fi lm scores, particularly in pictures directed by David Lean. His score for the 1962 movie Lawrence of Arabia won Jarre his fi rst Academy Award; he also won Oscars for his work in “Doctor Zhivago” and “A Passage to India.”

    • Aft ernoon in Montreal by Paul Creston, is part of the composer’s “Airborne Suite,” commissioned by Eastern Airlines. Italian American Creston (born Giuseppe Gutt oveggio in New York City in 1906) was one of the most performed American composers of the 1940’s and 50’s, as well as a notable teacher.

    • The Song in Denmark comes from the pen of another noted soundtrack composer, Emil Reesen. Since his fi lmography is entirely in Danish, Reesen is not as well known in the U.S. as the other fi lm composers on our program.

    • Orpheus in the Underworld, an operett a by Jacques Off enbach, is an irreverent parody of the Greek myth and stilted classical drama. The “Infernal Galop” from Act II, Scene 2 is famous as the music for the French “Can-can” dance. Saint-Saëns borrowed the tune, slowed it to a crawl and assigned it to the strings to represent the tortoise in “Carnival of the Animals.”

    • Reinhold Glière was a Soviet- Ukrainian composer of German-Polish descent. His 1900 change of his surname from “Glier” to “Glière,” which encouraged the legend of his French or Belgian descent, practically makes him a European tour in himself. The Russian Sailor’s Dance from his ballet “The Red Poppy” is the work for which he is best known in the West. His concertos for harp, soprano, and horn have also att ained popularity as virtuoso music.

These are some of the stops we will make today on our musical journey around the world. Music is a universal language, which unites and helps teach us about one another.

We hope you enjoy your trip!
